Book Vitamin Discoveries and Disasters

Download or read book Vitamin Discoveries and Disasters written by Frances R. Frankenburg MD and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new work on the history of vitamins and the brilliant men and women who discovered the existence and nature of these small molecules so vital to our health. Vitamin Discoveries and Disasters: History, Science, and Controversies describes the emergence of nutritional science and its contributions to our understanding of how the body functions. It is an absorbing look at the men and women, many little known in their lifetimes, whose medical detective work helped us conquer a number of devastating health conditions, including some forms of mental illness. Each chapter of Vitamin Discoveries and Disasters focuses on a specific vitamin, describing the researchers, the research, and the historic and scientific contexts for its discovery. Together, these chapters chart the ongoing conflict between physicians who saw illness as caused by organisms and those who saw illness as a result of dietary deficiency. A concluding chapter shows how our stronger grasp of the effects of vitamin deficiencies on large populations can be used to the utmost benefit of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been designed, as its title implies, as a practical book for medical practitioners, although it should be of interest to medical students and nutritionists. It attempts to provide essential information about this important group of substances rather than be an all embracing monograph on the subject. For this reason biochemical and physiological considera tions have been kept to a minimum, and aspects of animal disorders and animal husbandry have not been considered. The material is often presented in a rather dogmatic fashion and, with rare exceptions, references are not included since this makes reading more difficult. The exceptions, where references are provided, are the therapeutic claims, and the series of recent studies which have indicated that vitamin deficiencies are still widely present among certain groups of the population of many industrially developed countries. To add to this reference list there is a reading list which has been selected to give key books, reviews with extensive bibliography and important articles over the past 10 years. From this reading list it is possible to trace most of the literature on the vitamins since they were first described over half a century ago.

Book Vitamin A Deficiency

Download or read book Vitamin A Deficiency written by Alfred Sommer and published by . This book was released on 1912 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many studies over the past decade and a half have indicated that vitamin A status is an important determinant of health. The World Bank now estimates that vitamin A intervention programs are some of the most cost-effective health strategies globally. This new book, written by leading investigators in the field, is the first to synthesize the many important studies to date. The authors identify and quantify the biological, clinical and public health impact of vitamin A deficiency on childhood growth, mortality and morbidity, including anemia and blindness. They deal with the epidemiologic and biological basis of these findings, and with the prevention and treatment of these disorders, particularly of measles, diarrhea and xeorophthalmia. Alternative approaches to identifying individuals and populations in need of intervention, alternative strategies for improving vitamin A and carotenoids, and the relationship between vitamin A and immunity are discussed. This comprehensive volume on a critically important and widespread nutritional deficiency will serve as a unique resource for nutritionists, physicians, public health workers and policy makers, and will be especially relevant to clinicians and researchers in international health.

Book Requirements of Vitamin A Thiamine Riboflavine and Niacin

Download or read book Requirements of Vitamin A Thiamine Riboflavine and Niacin written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1967 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of deficiency states in respect to vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavine, and niacin is discussed in light of clinical evidence. Information on the intake, absorption and utilization of the vitamins and depletion-repletion study results provide a basis to recommend vitamin needs. Specific characteristics, utilization and needs for each vitamin are presented. Practical implications are discussed with reference to 1) assessment of the adequacy of total food supplies and results of consumption surveys; 2) methods of improving diets to attain recommended intake levels; 3) public health aspects of meeting needs of vulnerable groups. The FAO report recommends 1) further research to fill gaps in present knowledge of vitamins; 2) acceptance of recommended intake levels as objectives for nutritional improvement; 3) attention to young children's vulnerability to deficiencies, especially vitamin A; 4) direct attention to adequate nutrient intake for all age group; 5) depreciation of programs that overemphasize provision of individual nutrients rather than balanced intake.

Excerpt: Hypovitaminosis D is a deficiency of vitamin D. It can result from inadequate nutritional intake of vitamin D coupled with inadequate sunlight exposure (in particular sunlight with adequate ultraviolet B rays), disorders that limit vitamin D absorption, and conditions that impair the conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites including certain liver, kidney, and hereditary disorders. Deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization and leads to bone softening diseases including rickets in children and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults. Mapping of several bone diseases onto levels of vitamin D (calcidiol) in the blood.Hypovitaminosis D is typically diagnosed by measuring the concentration in blood of the compound 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol), which is a precursor to the active form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). One 2008 review has proposed the following four categories for hypovitaminosis D: Note that 1.0 nmol/L = 0.4 ng/mL for this compound. Other authors have suggested that a 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of 75-80 nmol/L (30-32 ng/mL) may be sufficient although a majority of healthy young people with comparatively extreme sun exposure did not reach this level in a study done in Hawaii. Calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol). Active form.
