Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to investigate the transition experiences of AVID program graduates who were beginning their second year of college at competitive four-year public universities. All eight participants, in the AVID pre-college program for at least three years, had successfully transitioned to the university. The study was framed by two research questions: (1) How did AVID program graduates adapt academically and culturally to a four-year public university during their first year? (2) In what ways did they attribute their persistence in college to their high school AVID experience? The findings indicated that the participants, all first generation college, felt both academically and culturally challenged during the transitional year, especially in the areas of critical reading and expository writing. Some participants, not accustomed to the academic reading and writing standards of the university, used a trial and error method to attempt to meet the requirements and did not consistently execute the strategies learned in AVID. These students reported missing classes and avoiding reading assignments.

Book An Analysis of the Relationship of the AVID Program on the Educational Outcomes Attributed to College Ready Graduates

Download or read book An Analysis of the Relationship of the AVID Program on the Educational Outcomes Attributed to College Ready Graduates written by Sandra Lu Gann Franklin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is designed to increase student performance through a college readiness system which provides students access to college preparatory curriculum. The beliefs sustained within the AVID philosophy maintain that when high student standards are upheld and academic and social support is provided, students will excel. The purpose of this study was to compare campus college readiness rates of students participating in the AVID program with non-AVID students. The study analyzed the college readiness rates of ninth through twelfth grade students in 77 public high schools by 1) comparing AVID to non-AVID students, 2) determining the relationship between college readiness and attendance, Advanced Placement, and type of graduation plan, and 3) calculating the correlation between attendance, Advanced Placement participation, and Recommended High School Program or Distinguished Achievement Program graduation plans between college readiness Language Arts and Mathematics. The analysis included independent samples t -tests, multiple regression and third order partial correlations. The results of this quantitative study revealed attendance, participation in Advanced Placement course enrollment, and college readiness Language Arts and Mathematics rates of AVID students were higher than non-AVID students. The study indicated non-AVID attendance, AVID attendance, and non-AVID Advanced Placement were the strongest predictive variables of college readiness in the area of Language Arts. Non-AVID attendance, non-AVID participation in Advanced Placement and AVID graduation plans were the strongest predictive variables of college readiness in the area of Mathematics. Results revealed disparity between Advanced Placement enrollment rates of AVID and non-AVID students. T -test results indicated a greater percentage of AVID students enrolled in and completed Advanced Placement courses than non-AVID students. In contrast, the multiple regression analysis identifying the variables most predictive of college readiness Language Arts and Mathematics exposed non-AVID Advanced Placement as a more potent predictor than the AVID Advanced Placement variable. This suggested that when all college readiness variables were considered, non- disadvantaged students had the greatest propensity to reach college readiness levels. Schools must take purposeful action to ensure students without the proclivity for academic success have the supportive learning environment needed to achieve college readiness levels.

Book AVID Graduates in Higher Education

Download or read book AVID Graduates in Higher Education written by Susan L. Cratty and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the support of the secondary school intervention program Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), the undergraduates I interviewed overcame obstacles in completing college requirements and obtaining access to California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM). It might be assumed; therefore, that they entered the university prepared for the challenges they encounter. Indeed, respondents still utilized tangible AVID skills, such as note-taking and organizational strategies, but AVID may not anticipate college integration barriers. Students of color bring with them to a primarily white institution of higher learning experiences of exclusion and unequal educational and social opportunity. My findings indicated, however, that agency and resistance emerged from AVID graduates' college integration experiences. Respondents mediated barriers by demonstrating accommodation without assimilation; relied on a campus cultural translator and ethnic in-group peers for support. Students prioritized familial values, expressed goals of becoming cultural translators; they embraced a dynamic dual identity, and they displayed a simultaneous straddling of cultures. I employ a framework of critical race theories; and my findings, based on twelve qualitative interviews with AVID graduates currently pursuing undergraduate degrees at CSUSM, contribute to the research on support services which seek to improve minority students' persistence and retention. Keywords: AVID program, first generation college students, college integration, college persistence and retention, second generation immigrant students, racial and ethnic minorities in higher education, critical race theory.

Book Expecting AVID Success The Teacher Perspective

Download or read book Expecting AVID Success The Teacher Perspective written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers the perceptions of the AVID program of 3 teachers within 3 counties in North Carolina. Although multiple student achievement programs are available to public schools today, the AVID program is the one most commonly adopted because AVID aggressively claims positive results. According to the AVID program, more AVID graduates apply, attend, and graduate from higher education than national and local averages. AVID is designed to assist those students from the "forgotten middle," characterized by those with high test scores, average-to-low grades, and minority or low-socioeconomic status who will be the first in their family to attend college. Within the program are 11 components that must be followed in order for school districts to receive AVID certification. Several studies of the AVID program have investigated the quantitative claims of the program, but very few have addressed qualitative concerns. This study seeks to provide a cross-case analysis of the teacher's perspective of AVID in light of teaching practices and teacher expectations. The research was conducted through semi-structured interview questions, observation, and data collection. Study findings demonstrate that the participants are largely satisfied with their experience and training in the AVID program although they acknowledge the initial training is overwhelming. They do not believe that AVID alters the expectations they have for themselves or for their students. They provide several recommendations on how AVID can improve in order to meet their needs as well as those of the AVID students. Finally, this study suggests a number of other questions for future research.

Book Perceptions of College Students Regarding the Effects of Their High School AVID Program on Their Post secondary Education

Download or read book Perceptions of College Students Regarding the Effects of Their High School AVID Program on Their Post secondary Education written by Benjamin Long Vue and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is one of many high school programs that prepare students for college. In 1980, the AVID program began as a support class to help struggling students. Over the years, the strategies developed by Mary Swanson, transformed the program which has been adopted by school districts throughout California to help underrepresented, first generation minority, and low socio-economic high school students realize the dream of going to college. Many other states and countries have also adopted the AVID strategies into their schools. The AVID program offers three components. In the first component, AVID offers students the opportunity to learn Cornell note-taking strategies, participate in weekly tutorials, and Socratic seminars. Secondly, students have an opportunity to volunteer time to work with community organizations. Lastly, students learn about career opportunities available to them. Several themes emerged from the analysis of the interview data. The participants, in this study, use the strategies taught in their high school AVID program to successfully complete college courses. They are more confident speaking in public because AVID required them to take part in community service. Participants appreciate that their high school AVID program provided opportunities to visit college and university campuses and to learn about career choices.

Book The Problem of College Readiness

Download or read book The Problem of College Readiness written by William G. Tierney and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how states, schools, and postsecondary institutions might best help improve college readiness and completion. Though more students are entering college, many drop out, especially those who are low income and/or of color. To address this problem, educational stakeholders have focused on the concept of “college readiness,” or the preparation a student needs to succeed in college. However, what it means to be college ready and how to help more students become ready are questions without clear answers. By way of historical and contemporary analyses, this book uses California as a case study to demonstrate how the state has endeavored to make postsecondary opportunity accessible for all students. The contributors also explore the challenges that remain and address what states and schools can do to improve college readiness and completion. “This book adds important information to the debates and discussions around this critical topic.” — Caroline Sotello Viernes Turner, coeditor of Understanding Minority-Serving Institutions

Book excerpt: As public education declined and many Americans despaired of their children's future, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Freedman volunteered as a writing mentor in some of California's toughest innercity schools. He discovered a program called AVID that gave him hope. In this work of creative non-fiction, Mr. Freedman interweaves the lives of AVID's founder, Mary Catherine Swanson, and six of her original AVID students over a 20-year period, from 1980 to 2000. With powerful personalities, explosive conflicts, and compelling action, Wall of Fame portrays the dramatic story of how one teacher in one classroom created a pragmatic program that has propelled thousands of students to college. This story of determination, courage, and hope inspires a new generation of teachers, students, and parents to fight for change from the bottom up.

Book A Study of the Advancement VIA Individual Determination AVID Program and Student Self efficacy and Academic Achievement

Download or read book A Study of the Advancement VIA Individual Determination AVID Program and Student Self efficacy and Academic Achievement written by Kimberly S. Monachino and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study examined the impact of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program on students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcome measures at the middle and high school level. AVID is a college readiness system designed to prepare at-risk students in the fourth through 12th grade for college. The main focus of this study was to determine if there was a difference in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and if there was a difference in AVID students' academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade in reading and math. Participants included seventh through 11th grade AVID students in one suburban school district within northeast Ohio (N = 239). These students reported perceptions of their self-efficacy on the My Voice Survey (QISA, 2010). Student achievement data were obtained from the 2010-2011 Ohio Department of Education Local Report Card. Through multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) the data were analyzed. Findings from this study indicated that there were statistically significant differences in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and statistically significant differences in academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade for AVID students in reading and math. AVID students' active engagement was statistically significant in year 1 of the AVID program when compared to year 2, year 3 or more. Seventh grade AVID students' math scores had a statistically significant higher mean score (414.66) than did eighth grade AVID students' math scores (403.02). These results suggested that AVID students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcomes did not increase as they progressed through the program. The data showed that perhaps the AVID program may not be the answer to the problem that was posed in this study and that the AVID program alone may not be the reason for the findings of the study. The results may be attributed to other variables beyond the AVID program, such as high quality instruction from teachers, mentoring from tutors, support from guidance counselors, or encouragement from family members.

Book Impact of Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID on Achievement and Perceptions of Learning

Download or read book Impact of Advancement Via Individual Determination AVID on Achievement and Perceptions of Learning written by Zoe Varela Beltz and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing students for success in their educational endeavors and beyond is the primary function of schools and, yet, how to do so is one of the most hotly debated issues of education today. Programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, seek to help students become more successful and more prepared for college and also hope to close the achievement gap. This study examines the impact of the AVID program at one Southern California high-performing school on its students' academics and perceptions of school and learning. The study found that students within the AVID program increased their GPAs and those who had been in for two years had even stronger growth. Additionally, results showed that students overwhelmingly felt that the program had a positive impact on their school and learning, most especially on aspects of organization, collaboration, and the AVID family.

Book The Implementation and Outcomes of the AVID Program in the Urban Middle School Setting

Download or read book The Implementation and Outcomes of the AVID Program in the Urban Middle School Setting written by Katrina Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the implementation and outcomes of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program within the context of urban middle schools. AVID is a college and career readiness program designed to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in their academic pursuits. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the AVID program is implemented in urban middle schools and to determine its impact on students’ academic performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research employs quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to gather comprehensive insights. The study involves semi-structured interviews with teachers, campus administrators, district administrators, and coordinators involved with the implementation of the AVID program. Additionally, academic records and standardized test scores were analyzed to measure the outcomes for students who participated in the AVID program compared to their non-AVID peers. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing knowledge on the effectiveness of the AVID program specifically in urban middle schools. By examining the implementation strategies utilized by schools, this research aims to identify the factors that contribute to successful program execution. Furthermore, it seeks to explore how the AVID program influences students' college aspirations and their overall educational experiences in urban middle schools. The outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing the AVID program in urban middle schools. The study will also shed light on the impact of the program on academic performance, college aspirations, and the overall educational trajectory of participating students. These findings will inform educators, administrators, and policymakers of the potential benefits and limitations of implementing the AVID program within urban middle school settings. Overall, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the body of research on the AVID program by providing empirical evidence on its implementation and outcomes in urban middle schools. The findings will offer valuable insights to guide future program implementation and inform strategies to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes of students from underrepresented backgrounds in urban settings

Book Toward Excellence with Equity

Download or read book Toward Excellence with Equity written by Ronald F. Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, economist Ronald F. Ferguson has investigated the myriad factors that combine to create racial disparities in academic performance, ranging from school policies and practices to informal interactions between children and their parents and peers. Toward Excellence with Equity brings together Ferguson's most important articles and most recent thinking on these ideas. Taken together, these essays show that closing achievement gaps is more urgent today than ever before--and that dramatic success is possible. "This book issues an urgent call to action to anyone concerned about the lagging success rates among minority children in American schools and the repercussions for our country's future. Ronald Ferguson not only surveys the bleak terrain surrounding the achievement gap, but provides all of us with a road map to reach higher ground." -- Geoffrey Canada, President and CEO, Harlem Children's Zone "Toward Excellence with Equity is an important book written by one of the nation's foremost experts on education and economic development. Ronald Ferguson's pioneering work on black/white disparities in student skill levels and achievement-test scores has significant public policy implications. This book is a must-read for anyone concerned about narrowing the racial gap in educational attainment and earnings." -- William Julius Wilson, Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor, Harvard University "This book combines high-quality research, judicious insights, brilliant speculation, and common sense to set forth strategies to reduce the achievement gap dramatically. It is particularly compelling in calling for a comprehensive social movement that will not only transform schools but establish strong communities, effective parenting, and powerful peer cultures." -- Henry M. Levin, William H. Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education, Teachers College, Columbia University "Ferguson conducts an authoritative review to show that disparities in academic performance can be closed by strong parental engagement and by parents working in partnership with schools around a shared vision of success for their children. The reality is that educators can't do it alone. This highly intelligent book gives policymakers, educators, and parents essential tools for closing achievement gaps between high-performing and low-performing schools." -- Susan Zelman, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ohio Department of Education "Toward Excellence with Equity is essential reading for any businessperson who cares about the well-being of children and the future quality of the American workforce." -- Bridgette Heller, Chairman of the Executive Leadership Council and Global President of Johnson & Johnson's Baby, Kids, and Wound-Care Division Ronald F. Ferguson is the faculty cochair and director of the Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University and the founder and director of the Tripod Project for school improvement.
