Book excerpt: First Day It is my first day on the job as a new flight attendant. We have finished serving, and I am sitting in the last row reflecting on 'where I am." I look forward and see the No Smoking-Fasten Seat Belt Signs; I see the tops of passenger heads in their seats; I see someone walking toward the back of the plane headed for the bathroom. I am thinking, "Wow, I am in charge of this plane and the passengers - my airline has put me here and trusts me to perform my duties. That includes not only serving, but also (and more importantly) to evacuate this jet in a survivable emergency! I CAN DO THIS! On every trip, I meet some new airline crews, and I know I have found my niche. I love the chat with some of the passengers. I am on a short flight (50 min airtime), and I notice a passenger on an aisle seat working a New York Times Crossword Puzzle. My comment, "I wish I could work that puzzle, it's over my head." 40 minutes later, doing the landing check, I noticed he had completed the puzzle. "Good job" I said. This book does contain some racy stories, along with sad, emergency and sexual stories. It is now about one month into my exciting, new career. Looking toward the back of the airplane and see a man and a woman both go into a bathroom. Hmmm, what is that all about? They came out a bit disheveled, and I learned from the other flight attendants that the couple now belongs to the Mile High Club, or simply 'sex in the bathroom'. I'm thinking, "In that extremely small, smelly space?" Whatever! A passenger commented, "What a rush that must be!" Cute Pilot Still new in my career, I am meeting some cute, young pilots. It certainly is not unheard of for airline crews to date, but how about a hot fling with a married pilot? I met Aaron, and we were scheduled to fly together for the month. On every flight, and on our layovers, we were definitely flirting, to say the least. On one of our layovers, Aaron asked me to join him in the hotel hot tub before retiring for the evening. It was a very nice hotel with a great pool and inviting hot tub. I knew where this was leading, and I was excited; I wanted to have an evening with him (no one around and no alcohol) just passion. We went to his room after the hot tub, and I slowly took-off my bathing suit and his suit as well. The next several hours were everything I had expected, and more. Aaron had a great body and was certainly well-endowed. My new friend, Aaron, knew all the right moves to make me happy. We continued with hot, lusty sex for at least three hours; I returned to my room as a happy girl. I'm sure I looked tired in the morning. We met as a crew in the hotel lobby to return to the airport. I remember the Captain smiling at me, and continuing to smile throughout the trip. Thankfully no comment was made; guess what? Adorable Aaron signed-up to fly another month with me. So, the excitement and passion was repeated a couple more times. Aaron created a very special memory for me; one that I will never forget. Do you think that experience is a rare one for flight crews? Think again. Having a nice, clean room ready and waiting is just too tempting for many, certainly not all. Being young and having a few sleepless nights, I can handle. My Company relies on me to have due diligence on every flight. I tried to never let them down. I always valued the safety of my entire group of passengers above everything else. Enjoying my evenings on layovers, now that's a different story. So many stories, where do I start? Straight men, gay men, straight women, gay women, bi-sexual or whatever? They all exist; I will share with you some of those intricacies.

Book excerpt: TRANS WORLD AIRLINES - A Book of Memories is a history of TWA offered in a different and most unique format... through the eyewitness experiences of its flight crews and ground workers, as well as friends of the company who share their reminiscences. TWA was a pioneer and an important domestic and international airline that played prominently in developing commercial aviation. This book introduces the founders of the airline and some of the early pilots, flight attendants and mechanics who set the standard. We also glimpse inside to the legendary and colorful Howard Hughes, who shaped the airline and campaigned for the Lockheed Constellation. We also learn about Carl Icahn and his controversial leadership of the airline. Jon Proctor, who devoted twenty-seven years of his professional life to TWA, contributed several stories, including a description of TWA's famous Royal Ambassador Service and the Grand Canyon crash. Jon has also contributed many of the beautiful photographs of TWA aircraft that grace the pages of this book. Another TWA veteran, George Hamlin, also contributed many images, as well as stories about the iconic Flight Center at New York International Airport. Other contributions detail many of the VIPs who traveled on TWA, including White House press charters for Presidents Johnson and Nixon; plus Hollywood celebrities, and legendary figures such as Bing Crosby and David Letterman. These are stories from the heart, from employees who dedicated their entire professional careers to the airline, involved personally with the incredible achievements that made TWA the carrier it was. The people of TWA, numbering in the tens of thousands, literally spanned the globe over the years. We invite readers to enjoy these stories, which revisit an era that will never be replicated.

The history of aviation is full of accounts of history's most spectacular flights. But what about the ones from which someone failed to return? - A celebrated millionaire--who also happened to be the world's foremost aviator--lifted off in a small plane one clear morning in 2007 and disappeared. - The glamorous son of a beloved fallen president took off on a hazy summer night in 1999 and plunged himself and two others into the Atlantic Ocean. - A US Navy blimp landed one Sunday morning in 1942 in the middle of a city street in California with no one aboard. Some of these "non-returns" occurred because of errors in judgment; others were intentional, and some resulted from causes still unknown. Get the full, meticulous account of the fascinating people involved in these flights, the mistakes they made, and the ways in which their "flight of no return" affected the world. Pilot and aviation writer Steven A. Ruffin covers the entire 230-year span of manned flight in all types of aircraft through war and peace. Balloons, blimps, biplanes, jets, and spaceships have all suffered mishaps over the years. Don't miss the mystery, adventure, intrigue, and a sprinkling of the supernatural and extraterrestrial in Flights of No Return.

Book excerpt: This book commemorates Wichita's role as Air Capital of the World. It takes readers from the early birds and barnstormers to the pioneers and entrepreneurs who established dozens of aircraft and associated factories in the 1920s. The story continues with the founding of Cessna, Beechcraft and Stearman (which became Boeing Wichita, then Spirit AeroSystems) and the massive build-up during World War II. Robust post-war growth got another boost when Bill Lear came to town and launched the business jet revolution with his Learjet. Today Wichita remains at the center of global aviation design and manufacturing with Textron Aviation, Spirit AeroSystems, Bombardier Learjet, Airbus and many dozens of smaller aviation manufacturers, suppliers and support organizations. What made Wichita the Air Capital? Flat prairies resembled one enormous landing field. Southwesterly winds added extra thrust to get and stay aloft. Farming and small manufacturing provided a legion of imaginative, industrious problem-solvers. Local boosters latched onto and promoted anything that flew. The city's central location provided an ideal refueling stop for coast-to-coast airmail routes. And oil generated a class of savvy, starry-eyed entrepreneurs who both used aircraft and had money to invest. Wichita brought it all together. The people. The promise. The planes. On Sept. 2, 1911, Albin Longren became the first person to build and fly an airplane in Kansas. His pusher-type biplane lifted off from a hayfield with a four-gallon gas tank and "flight instruments" that consisted of a pocket watch and barometer. The first plane built in Wichita rolled out of production in 1917, when Clyde Cessna assembled his Comet. Wichita's first commercial aircraft, the Swallow, came from the E.M. Laird Airplane Co. in 1920. By 1928, Wichita was general aviation's manufacturing grand central, producing 120 airplanes a week - a quarter of all U.S. output. A Chamber of Commerce Air Capital logo contest celebrated the city's 16 aircraft manufacturers, six aircraft engine factories, 11 airports and dozen flying schools. Wichita produces more airplanes - almost 300,000 to date - and offers more skilled aviation workers than any other city. Aviation forms Wichita's heritage and future.
