Book Hero of the Air

Download or read book Hero of the Air written by William F Trimble and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2010-05-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the role of Glenn H. Curtiss in the origins of aviation in the United States Navy. A self-taught mechanic and inventor, Curtiss was a key figure in the development of the airplane during the early part of the century. His contributions are generally well known, among them a control system using the aileron instead of the Wrights’ wing-warping, the first successful hydro-airplane and flying boat, among other developments. Curtiss’s links to the Navy came as result of advocates of aviation in the Navy, chief among them Captain Washington I. Chambers, who recognized that the navy had special requirements for airplanes and their operations, and for aviators and their training. In a partnership with the navy, Curtiss helped meet the special requirements of the service for aircraft, particularly those with the potential for operating with naval vessels at sea or in conducting long-distance flights over water. He also was instrumental in training the first naval aviators. Curtiss and the navy continued their collaboration through World War I, reaching a climax in 1919 with the first transatlantic flight by the famed Navy-Curtiss NC flying boats. The book addresses the broader implications of the Curtiss-Navy collaboration in the context of the long-standing trend of government-private cooperation in the introduction and development of new technologies. It also explores the interactive dynamics of weapons procurement and technological change within a large and entrenched bureaucracy and helps lay to rest the persistent myth that the navy resisted the introduction of aviation. The pioneering work of Curtiss and his close ties with Chambers and others helped the navy to define the role of aviation in the years up to and through World War I. The book will relies heavily on primary source materials from a variety of archival collections, including the Library of Congress, National Archives, National Air and Space Museum, and the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men who ventured into the air in the Navy’s first frail aircraft were not only daring—they had vision, persistence, and a nearly unlimited determination to convince the skeptics that their frail kite-like structures could someday possess military value. This is the story of their trials, tragedies, and triumphs. They patched cooling systems with chewing gum, they lived by “crash, repair, and fly again,” but they succeeded in developing this new service into an effective arm of the fleet. Wings for the Fleet, first published in 1966, covers the fascinating details of those pioneering days from 1910 to the entry of the United States into World War I. All of the heroic “early birds” are here with full accounts of their exploits. Admiral van Deurs, himself a naval aviator since the early 1920s, has rendered a significant service by his careful preparation of this well-balanced, thoroughly illustrated historical account, which comes complete with appendixes listing early naval aviators and the planes they flew. Over one hundred photographs were selected from official and private sources to illustrate this book.

Book Back There Where the Past Was

Download or read book Back There Where the Past Was written by Charles Champlin and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1999-12-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Charles Champlin, formerly a writer-correspondent for Time and Life magazines and since 1965 an editor and columnist for the Los Angeles Times, his "other time" was the nineteen-thirties. His "other place," where he was born and spent his boyhood and early adolescence, was the lovely Finger Lakes village of Hammondsport in western New York State. Its population was, and is, 1,200, and it was a fine place to grow up: Keuka Lake to swim in, band concerts in the park on Saturday nights, wagonloads of grapes rumbling through town to the wineries, which continue to make fine champagnes and wines. Glenn Hammond Curtiss manufactured airplanes there in the early years of the century, and in the thirties you could watch planes practice looping the loop on summer afternoons. Over the years, Champlin's reminiscences about Hammondsport in his newspaper columns have evoked warm response. Readers who grew up thousands of miles from Steuben County, New York, say they find echoes of their own times and their own places in his tales of home.
