Book Global Food Futures

Book excerpt: By 2050 the world will be faced with the enormous challenge of feeding 9 billion people despite being affected by climate change, rising energy costs and pressure on food growing land and other major resources. How will the world produce 70% more food by 2050 to feed a projected extra 2.3 billion people? What will be the impact of food shortages and high prices on areas in crisis such as sub-Sahara Africa? Where will future production growth come from? And how do we balance the need for environmental protection with sustainable agricultural production methods? This is the first text to present a scholarly, balanced approach to the contentious area of food production and supply up to 2050 - offering a readable and well-informed account which tackles the global food situation in all its totality, from agricultural production, technological advance, dietary concerns, population changes, income trends, environmental issues, government food and agriculture policy, trade, financial markets, macroeconomics and food security. Highly accessible and written by a specialist author with experience as an agricultural analyst, policy advisor and researcher, Global Food Futures synthesises the key issues in one volume.

Book excerpt: Food Justice: A Primer is a collection of essays by activists, academics, farmers, and others involved in the Food Justice Movement examining food justice and food sovereignty from a variety of angles. These essays range in scope and tone from personal, hands-on experiences to macro-level observations of how communities' ability to both access healthful, justly-produced food and determine for themselves how they are fed can be improved upon, including efforts currently underway toward these ends. For too long, the Food Justice Movement has been senselessly divided between those who focus on the rights of humans and those who uphold the rights of nonhumans. In truth, the most just and efficient way forward to promote this cause is for these communities to come together and work in solidarity with one another, as myriad individuals and organizations around the world demonstrate with their hard work and careful analysis. This book aims to illustrate why this is necessary while confirming that it is possible, in hopes of inspiring further cooperation and collaboration between seemingly disparate causes under the umbrella of Food Justice. Every book sold helps support "Casa Vegana de la Comunidad," a community-led food justice project from Chilis on Wheels based in Puerto Rico. Chilis on Wheels founded the now permanent community house after providing hurricane relief to thousands of Puerto Ricans after hurricane Maria in 2017. The organization also helps provide food and other resources to homeless people and nonhuman people through its various chapters across mainland U.S. Endorsements: "This is an incredibly urgent intersection that needs to be addressed by both the vegan/animal rights movement and greater food justice movement. Rodriguez hits the nail on the head - we cannot solve one without the other. Animal rights activists need to understand that getting the world to "go vegan," especially without consideration as to where our plant foods come from, will not automatically fix local, national, and global systems of food production and redistribution. Meanwhile, food justice activists need to understand that the production and consumption of animal products works directly against their own objectives. I'm thrilled that there is finally a book that addresses these discrepancies to both audiences. This is a new favorite that I will definitely be recommending to all my friends and colleagues." -Karla R Vargas, co-founder of La Raza for Liberation "Food Justice: A Primer" critically examines the overlapping connections between various liberation movements, managing to do so unapologetically yet accessibly. This is the perfect read for anyone who cares about changing the world." -Jasmin Singer, Senior Editor of VegNews Magazine, co-host of the Our Hen House podcast "With 7.5 billion people on the planet today, there has never been a stronger disconnect between what we choose to eat and the impact those choices have on our planet and the living beings who inhabit it. Food Justice: A Primer draws critical connections between agriculture's environmental impact, food scarcity, inequality, and justice for all- human and non-human alike. This powerful, collaborative effort is a must-read for anyone who eats." -Hope Bohanec, Executive Director of Compassionate Living, Project Manager at United Poultry Concerns "This incredible book is thoughtful, inclusive and comprehensive and provides the requisite readings and perspectives to fully understand and address the issues and challenges before us - locally and globally. Most importantly, it is a call to action that resonates with my favorite three words: Si Se Puede!" -Stephen Ritz, Top Ten Finalist of the Global Teacher Prize, Founder of Green Bronx Machine

Book Global Food Global Justice

Download or read book Global Food Global Justice written by Mary C. Rawlinson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Brillant-Savarin remarked in 1825 in his classic text Physiologie du Goût, “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you who you are.” Philosophers and political theorists have only recently begun to pay attention to food as a critical domain of human activity and social justice. Too often these discussions treat food as a commodity and eating as a matter of individual choice. Policies that address the global obesity crisis by focusing on individual responsibility and medical interventions ignore the dependency of human agency on a culture of possibilities. The essays collected here address this lack in philosophy and political theory by appreciating food as an origin of human culture and a network of social relations. They show how an approach to the current global obesity epidemic through individual choice deflects the structural change that is necessary to create a culture of healthy eating. Analyzing the contemporary food crises of obesity, malnutrition, environmental degradation, and cultural displacement as global issues of public policy and social justice, these essays display the essential interconnections among issues of social inequity, animal rights, environmental ethics, and cultural identity. They call for new solidarities and new public policies to ensure the sustainable practices necessary to the production and distribution of wholesome and satisfying food. Lévi-Strauss located the origin of ethics in table manners. By learning what and how to eat, humans learned respect for others, for the earth, and for the other forms of life that sustain human existence. Lévi-Strauss fears that in our time this “lesson in humility” coursing throughout the mythologies of “savage peoples” may have been forgotten, so that the world is treated as a thing to be appropriated and the extinction of species and cultures as an inevitable result of the ascendancy of global capital. This volume makes clear the need to change the way we eat, if we are to live on the earth together with what Lévi-Strauss calls “decency and discretion.”

Book Food as a Human Right

Download or read book Food as a Human Right written by William D. Schanbacher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important work addresses the difficult ethical issues surrounding the accessibility of food to all people as a human right, and not a privilege that emerges because of social structure or benefit of geography. Food sovereignty—the right of peoples to define their own chosen food and agriculture, free of monopolization or threats—is the path to stopping global hunger. This book approaches the topic from a solutions-based perspective, discussing concrete policy providing for sovereignty, or control, of one's own food sources as a solution that, while controversial, offers more promise than do the actions of international organizations and trade agreements. Providing access to safe, healthy food is an ethical responsibility of the world's nations, not just a right of the elite or wealthy. This book presses the need to formulate policies that address the problems of poverty and hunger on a more humane and meaningful level. Organized thematically, chapters are based on such topics as food security, food sovereignty, human rights, and sustainability that focus on the global food system. Specific case studies provide examples of global hunger and poverty issues. Taken in its entirety, the book informs readers of how their food consumption might negatively affect the global poor, while its concluding chapters offer solutions for alleviating problems in the global food system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there are over a billion hungry people on the planet, more than ever before in history. While the global food crisis dropped out of the news in 2008, it returned in 2011 (and is threatening us again in 2012) and remains a painful reality for the world's poor and underserved. Why, in a time of record harvests, are a record number of people going hungry? And why are a handful of corporations making record profits? In Food Rebellions! Crisis and the Hunger for Justice, authors Eric Holt-Giménez and Raj Patel with Annie Shattuck offer us the real story behind the global food crisis and document the growing trend of grassroots solutions to hunger spreading around the world. Food Rebellions! contains up to date information about the current political and economic realities of our food systems. Anchored in political economy and an historical perspective, it is a valuable academic resource for understanding the root causes of hunger, growing inequality, the industrial agri-foods complex, and political unrest. Using a multidisciplinary approach, Holt-Giménez and Patel give a detailed historical analysis of the events that led to the global food crisis and document the grassroots initiatives of social movements working to forge food sovereignty around the world. These social movements and this inspiring book compel readers to confront the crucial question: Who is hungry, why, and what can we do about it?

Book excerpt: Human-kind and ecological systems are currently facing one of the toughest challenges: how to feed more billions of people in the future within the perspective of climate change, energy shortages, economic crises and growing competition for the use of renewable and non renewable resources. This challenge is even more crucial given that we have not yet come close to achieving the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of people living in extreme poverty and hunger. Scientists and relevant stakeholders are now voicing a clear message: that multiple challenges the world is facing require innovative, multifaceted, science-based, technological, economic and political approaches in theoretical thinking, decision making and action. With this background central to survival and well-being, the purpose of this volume is to formulate and promote relevant theoretical analysis and policy recommendations. The major perspective of this publication is that paradigm and policy shifts at all levels are needed urgently. This is based on the evidence that agriculture in the 21st century will be undergoing significant demands, arising largely from the need to increase the global food enterprise, while adjusting and contributing to climate change adaptation and mitigation. Global Food Insecurity aims at providing structure to effect achievement of this critically needed roadmap.

Book Food Systems Failure

Download or read book Food Systems Failure written by Christopher Rosin and published by . This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical assessment of the contemporary global food system in light of the heightening food crisis, as evidence of its failure to achieve food security for the world's population. A key aspect of this failure is identified in the neoliberal strategies which emphasize industrial efficiencies, commodity production and free trade-ideologies that underlie agricultural and food policies in what are frequently referred to as 'developed countries'. The book examines both the contradictions in the global food system as well as the implications of existing ideologies of production associated with commodity industrial agriculture using evidence from relevant international case studies. The book's first section presents the context of the food crisis with contributions from leading international academics and food policy activists, including climate scientists, ecologists and social scientists. These contributions identify current contradictions in policy and practice that impede solutions to the food crisis. Set within this context, the second section assesses current conditions in the global food system, including economic viability, sustainability and productivity. Case study analyses of regions exposed to neoliberal policy at the production end of the system provide insights into both current challenges to feeding the world, as well as alternative strategies for creating a more just and moral food system.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international community recognises the fundamental right of everyone to be free of hunger. Eradicating hunger and poverty is also a priority Millennium Development Goal, adopted by 189 countries. The sad truth is, however, that the gap between theory and practice is wide and, at an estimated 925 million, the number of hungry people in the world remains unacceptably high. The European Union has long invested in rural development, both at home and in developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The EU is committed to ensuring global food security. The 1 billion euro EU Food Facility created in 2008 provided a rapid response to problems caused by soaring food prices in developing countries. The Food Security Thematic Programme is helping improve food security for the world's poorest and most vulnerable people. Bilateral country programmes also provide substantial support to agriculture and food security and overall the EU has more than delivered on promises made at the G8 Summit in L'Aquila in 2009 to deliver €2.7 billion in support to agriculture and food security over 2010-2012: it has committed almost €3 billion in just two years. In this brochure, we look at the EU's recently launched four-year regional programme to transfer appropriate technology to Asia's poorest, smallholder farmers who are the backbone of the region's economies. The programme, 'Technology Transfer for Food Security in Asia', seeks to improve the food security, nutrition and livelihood of the poorest and most vulnerable people in South and Southeast Asia by increasing productivity through the transfer of appropriate and effective technologies, as well as enhanced access to markets. Encouraging regional cooperation is a priority. We see this as a vivid example of how Asia and Europe can work together to empower millions of people, making them a true part of a new, rising Asia -- EU Bookshop.

Book excerpt: The world has faced the big F's during the past two years: Fuel, Food and the Financial crises. Though the financial crisis has taken a forefront in 2009 and signs of recession seem to be diminishing, one cannot say the same of the Global Food Crisis. Over a year has passed since the international community began to find solutions to the food crisis, unfortunately, there are more hungry people in the world than any given time in history. The impact felt all over the world, especially on those who are the most vulnerable of all populations has been tremendous. In mid 2009, FAO estimated that 1.02 billion people, almost 60 million more people than this time last year, have been plunged into hunger. While there are a number of initiatives launched by various actors all over the world, it has becoming evident that a more planned, coordinated and cohesive effort is required in finding sustainable solutions to combat the food crisis. The United Nations, as the international body mandated to lead and coordinate response to crises formed the High-Level Task Force (HLTF) on the Global Food Security Crisis under the chairmanship of the UN Secretary General. The HLTF formulated a set of short-term and long-term outcomes and actions under the Comprehensive Framework of Action (CFA) that could be followed by the international community to combat the food crisis. Complex emergencies, natural and man-made disasters have already compounded the ability of the most vulnerable populations such as women, children, refugees, displaced and poor to cope with the food crisis. This study attempts to evaluate the role taken on by the UN when providing humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable populations in the context of the Global Food Crisis. The UN has had to evolve with such complex situations and has had to re-think the way they deliver humanitarian assistance. However, this study highlights the need for the UN to change the way it works by revisiting existing humanitarian and food architecture, policies and programmes, especially in the face of the Global Food Crisis.
