Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Nature, thou art my goddess”—Edmund’s bold assertion in King Lear could easily inspire and, at the same time, function as a lamentation of the inadequate respect of nature in culture. In this volume, international experts provide multidisciplinary exploration of the insubordinate representations of nature in modern and contemporary literature and art. The work foregrounds the need to reassess how nature is already, and has been for a while, striking back against human domination. From the perspective of literary studies, art, history, media studies, ethics and philosophy, and ethnology and anthropology, Avenging Nature highlights the need of assessing insurgent discourses that—converging with counter-discourses of race, gender or class—realize the empowerment of nature from its subaltern position. Acknowledging the argument that cultural representations of nature establish a relationship of domination and exploitation of human discourse over nonhuman reality and that, in consequence, our regard for nature as humanist critics is instrumental and anthropocentric, the present volume advocates for the view that the time has come to finally perceive nature’s vengeance and to critically probe into nature’s ongoing revenge against the exploitation of culture.

Book Avenging the Owl

Download or read book Avenging the Owl written by Melissa Hart and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Han Solo avenged the destruction of an innocent planet by helping Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star. Han walked away with a gold medal and the love of his life. But when Solo Hahn—named in honor of the beloved action hero—tries to avenge the death of his gray-and-white kitten, he gets eight months of community service. Eight months of working at the local raptor center helping owls—his now sworn enemies. For the first time in his life, Solo is labeled a troubled kid, an at-risk youth. He’d always gotten good grades, had good friends, and gotten along with his parents. He used to volunteer to read Reader’s Digest to old people at the retirement home next door, and his favorite thing in the whole wide world was to surf. He wrote screenplays for fun. But when his parents uproot him and move the family from California to backwoods Oregon, Solo starts to lose track of the person he was. Everything is upside down, and he finds himself dealing with things way beyond his understanding. He’s the new kid in town, and he’s got a bad reputation. The question is: What will he do next? This is a story about staying true to yourself when things get tough. Solo has every reason to lash out, but he ultimately needs to find a way to cope. Avenging the Owl deals with the difficult issues of suicide and depression, but more than anything it captures the powerlessness of being a kid. It won’t be easy, but the wild beauty of Oregon, its cold, empty beaches and captivating wildlife, may be just what Solo and his family need to help them start over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xobo the Robo, possessed by the evil soul of Mr. God, plans the destruction of Mother Nature to reestablish its fictional alien ancestors system of Fathers and Sons. It raised a Robo Family and demonic Army; they run amok and cause devastation.. Militaries fail against Metal Monsters.. Ultimately, five children with Pure Hearts were chosen to stop Lord Xobo. At last, the War begins. Quotes from the book: Lord Xobo - "If there are no plants, no animals, no women, and only reanimated corpses of Fathers and Sons - The Brutons and Kreaks, then a better world, a New World could be created. The human race would have every opportunity to survive without plants, animals and women. Who knows, we may even go to other galaxies and annihilate plants, animals and women everywhere, until only Fathers and Sons remain in the whole universe. We would sing the glorious smell of putrefied corpses forever and ever." Uncle Jumbo - "Master Bodhitaran, I'm sorry to say this, but I have no other choice. I could guess what you are going to ask. I shudder to think about those creatures - Brutons and Kreaks. What little children could do against them? Please don't expect me to send these kids to do war against murderous Robots." Monk Bodhitaran - "No government on Earth has the tech to stand against Xobo and his United Family. Except us. These five children could beat them with the help of these formidable Purple Forks and few of my own magical devices. I'll guide them to victory. Leave them to me, I pledge my life to protect them!"

Book Holocaust and Nature

  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Holocaust and Nature written by Didier Pollefeyt and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes clear how Nazism was not only an attack on the human species and the Jewish people in particular, but also an attack on nature. Further, it examines the victims of the Holocaust for whom nature was not only a source of supplementary pain, but also a source of hope and redemption. The book reveals parallels between the attitudes of the bystanders during the Holocaust and us - bystanders today - watching the ecological disaster with the same passivity. The book's unique conclusion will challenge each reader. In addition to teaching us to be critical about our concepts of nature, as well as to remember the victims, the Holocaust also teaches us to become rescuers rather than bystanders in light of the contemporary destruction of nature. Book excerpt: Whether male or female, loyalist or radical, urban or rural, literati or autodidacts, Scottish Lowland poets in the age of Burns adamantly refuse to imagine a single British nation. Instead, they pose the question of "Scotland" as a revolutionary category, always subject to creative destruction and reformation.
