Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church written by Frank Leslie Cross and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 1842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniquely authoritative and wide-ranging in its scope, The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is the indispensable one-volume reference work on all aspects of the Christian Church. It contains over 6,000 cross-referenced A-Z entries, and offers unrivalled coverage of all aspects of this vast and often complex subject, including theology, churches and denominations, patristic scholarship, the bible, the church calendar and its organization, popes, archbishops, saints, and mystics. In this revision, innumerable small changes have been made to take into account shifts in scholarly opinion, recent developments, such as the Church of England's new prayer book (Common Worship), RC canonizations, ecumenical advances and mergers, and, where possible, statistics. A number of existing articles have been rewritten to reflect new evidence or understanding, for example the Holy Sepulchre entry, and there are a few new articles. Perhaps most significantly, a great number of the bibliographies have been updated. Established since its first appearance in 1957 as an essential resource for ordinands, clergy, and members of religious orders, ODCC is an invaluable tool for academics, teachers, and students of church history and theology, as well as for the general reader.
Download or read book Self Portraits in the Nude written by Hannah Blue Heron and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the deep inner picture of the popular writer Hannah Blue Heron. Although a totally standalone book, this also serves as the third volume of Hannah's memoirs. Journal entries, short stories, poems, dreams, daydreams, past life experiences, and thoughtful essays all work together to give a far richer picture of her growth and development in later life than could the factual chronological style that she has used in earlier books. New readers will marvel at the almost universally applicable qualities of depth and perception in the variety of thoughts that are shared here by Blue Heron as she reaches her eightieth birthday. She has been a professional violinist, a nun for seventeen years, a hippie, a member of the women's back-to-the-land movement, and a prolific feminist writer. Readers of the stories of her childhood in Growing Tall in Colorado, and the both heartbreaking and beautiful account of her middle years in That Strange Intimacy will recognize the same open and honest sharing in Self Portraits in the Nude, but with a new intensity. Under six headings: Lesbian Love, Love and Healing, Past Lives, Vivid Dreams, Mystical Musings, and finally On Growing Old, we are given insights into one woman's progress in learning and loving and living joyously. One very special and practical gift in this book, is Hannah's story of learning and growing in the practice of meditation and the inclusion of a CD illustrating her creative use of music as an aid to that practice.
Download or read book In Him All Things Hold Together written by Rosemary Poole Morris and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book tracks Jesus's story and its implications in prose and poetry--in scripture, story and song, sketches and snippets of essay. After starting with a chapter on ways of being with scripture (taking it seriously but often not literally) and suggestive chapters on God and the Old Testament, it moves from Jesus's incarnation through his ministry and passion for the Kingdom of God to his Passion and bodily resurrection. These are followed by chapters on "what happened next," including two chapters on contemporary Christianity, the good and the bad of it. The "take" on Jesus, as both title and sub-title suggest, is broad, in some ways quite orthodox but insisting on his call for compassion, social justice, inclusiveness and wholeness for all. It's also about Jesus alive and with us now, albeit in a different dimension from those with which we are familiar. The many meditations are often brief, and the poetry is "for people, and not just for critics and other poets"! There is much here to think about, but it's not an academic tome. It can be provocative, and often it's just plain fun!
Download or read book Oremus written by Ave Maria Press and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oremus allows Catholics to experience anew—or for the first time—the beauty and rich spiritual heritage of the language used for almost two-thousand years in the scriptures, liturgy, and prayers of the Church. Traditional Latin prayers such as the Ave Maria, Sancte Michael, and Tantum Ergo are presented side-by-side with their literal English translations in this extraordinary collection. Pope Francis’s Twitter account in Latin has grown from 100,000 followers in 2013 to more than almost a million in 2020; and there is a growing interest by Catholics to learn traditional prayers in Latin. Oremus is a collection of cherished prayers in Latin—the exact words prayed by many of the saints over the centuries—including: The prayers of the Rosary—Pater Noster, Gloria Patri, and Salve Regina; Prayers for Eucharistic Adoration—O Salutaris, Laudes Divinae, and Anima Christi; Prayers for morning, evening, and night—Benedictus, Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis; Favorite psalms and Gospel Sequences; Prayers used by St. Louis de Montfort in his preparation for Total Consecration to Mary—Veni Creator and Ave Maris Stella; and Prayers of and to saints—Te Deum and Suscipe. Oremus includes an introduction, ecclesiastical Latin pronunciation guide, index, and accent markings throughout the text. It can be used as a prayer book for individuals, classrooms, families, and small groups.

Download or read book Ancient Chant Hymns for Guitar written by Gerard Garno and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÊThis is the first book to publish an extensive collection of pre-Renaissance music transcribed for guitar! Gregorian Chant melodies -- enormously popular in recent years -- form the basis for this volume. Inside, Garno argues that this music of the first 1500 years of Western history should no longer be ignored by guitarists. In support, he presents copious notes along with a myriad of single and multi-movement works, and concludes that such music is appropriately played on the guitar. A pioneering work that should be in every serious guitarist's library. Notation and tablature. Intermediate to advanced level. Includes access to online audio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholics always believe that there is a close association between the mystery of Christ in the Holy Eucharist and the mystery of Mary. This “sense of faith” is given theological and doctrinal exposition in this exciting new volume of Mary at the Foot of the Cross - VI: Marian Coredemption in the Eucharistic Mystery. Originally presented as Acts of the Marian symposium in England in the year of the Eucharist 2005, this precious collection of articles presents profound insights on the relationship between Marian Coredemption and Eucharistic mystery. Articles such as the late John Paul II’s teachings on Mary’s Presence in the Mass, Mary and the Eucharist in John of the Cross, St. Louis Grignion de Montfort, St. Veronica Giuliani, are only some of the most inspiring thought on the subject matter compiled in one decent volume. Ideal for scholarly research written by theologians and scholars, this volume is also accessible to non-professional readers as well. A must reading on the central truth of our Catholic faith: Mary and the Holy Eucharist.
