Book Multilingualism in European Language Education

Download or read book Multilingualism in European Language Education written by Cecilio Lapresta-Rey and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how different European education systems manage multilingualism. Each chapter focuses on one of ten diverse settings (Andorra, Asturias, the Basque Country, Catalonia, England, Finland, France, Latvia, the Netherlands and Romania) and considers how its education system is influenced by historical, sociolinguistic and legislative and political processes and how languages are handled within the system, stressing the challenges and opportunities in each area of study. The chapters provide the reader with insights around three key aspects: the management of the guarantee of the rights of regional language minorities; the incorporation of the language background inherited by immigrants living in Europe (whether they are European citizens or not) and the need to promote the learning of international languages. Individually, the chapters offer deep insights into a specific education system and, together, the studies allow for a comparison and holistic understanding of multilingualism in European education.

Book Catalan Sociolinguistics

Download or read book Catalan Sociolinguistics written by Miquel Àngel Pradilla Cardona and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The aim of the work Catalan Sociolinguistics. State of the Art and Future Challenges is to give an account, in a summary way, of the major topics dealt with by the study of the relation between language and society in the Catalan language community, and the extent to which international approaches have been received and how they have been adapted to the Catalan domain. Every tradition has interpreted this interaction with specific approaches. The Catalan tradition, for example, has opted for a vision that integrates a wide range of studies on different themes (economy, law, political science, communication, ecology, linguistic variation, anthropology, and so on). So, in the book you are holding, the authors of the various chapters, recognised specialists in their fields, have provided complementary views that will enable us to make an overall analysis, something that was urgently needed in the context of the ultimate aim of bringing internal consistency to the discipline.

Book Strategic Environmental Assessment Integrating Landscape and Urban Planning

Download or read book Strategic Environmental Assessment Integrating Landscape and Urban Planning written by Fabio Cutaia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the opportunities offered by Strategic Environmental Assessment in the context of guaranteeing the synchronized integration of landscape (in all its aspects) within urban plans, thereby helping to overcome the constraints of rigidly framed, sector-focused laws and a purely aesthetic concept of landscape. In pursuit of this goal, various scholars have previously attempted to construct arrays of indicators relating to the different conceptions of “landscape”. This book critically examines the most complete proposals of this nature, systematizing and comparing them and, finally, offering some guidelines with respect to their codification within specific application protocols. After opening chapters exploring the origins of the problem and analysing the European normative frame for Strategic Environmental Assessment, two case studies are described and discussed. A model is then presented for the evaluation of the effects of urban plans on landscape, including in cultural and perceptual terms. The author demonstrates that, when suitably employed, Strategic Environmental Assessment can indeed facilitate the integration of environmental, economic, and social sustainability into urban planning.

Book Global Inclusive Education

Download or read book Global Inclusive Education written by Jordi Collet and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses issues related to school inclusion from the perspective of systemic inclusion. It focuses on the need to face the challenges of inclusion in education from a broad perspective, including the classroom, the school as an institution, families, and the community. It also pays attention to the full interactions between them. The book demonstrates how inclusion can be carried out in very real, concrete and everyday ways. It also shows how researchers can work hand in hand with the professionals and other stakeholders who are developing their practices day by day. The book draws on a range of research projects of the Spanish and international research groups to provide both rich theoretical frameworks and rigorous research outcomes related to the four dimensions of the systemic inclusion perspective and its necessary networking: classroom, school, families and the community. Most of the chapters take Spain as the case study but, far from being a local book, it uses Spanish analysis to dialogue universally with current main debates and challenges in inclusion, almost 30 years after the Salamanca Statement.

Book CLIL in Spain

Download or read book CLIL in Spain written by David Lasagabaster and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book makes a significant and very timely contribution to furthering professional understanding of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The first part brings together the outcomes of CLIL implementation initiatives in different educational sectors in Spain which reflect regional possibilities and priorities. The second part takes a critical look at a variety of teacher education models, both in-service and pre-service. Linking classroom initiatives with teacher education underlines the importance of addressing this often neglected or ignored area. Quite simply, without appropriate teacher education programs, the full potential of CLIL is unlikely to be realised and the approach would be unsustainable. This publication provides the reader with practical suggestions and raises issues for further reflection. The contributors have embraced the ‘educational challenge’ and, in doing so, have made a significant contribution to disseminating CLIL practice across Europe and further afield by raising issues and questions which need to be addressed through future class-based inquiry and scientific research. The collection of case studies is also a celebration of the hard work, endeavour and constant drive by practitioners, teacher educators and researchers to give our young people the best linguistically-rich learning experiences they can possibly have throughout their schooling and further studies.” —Professor Do Coyle, University of Aberdeen

Book Multimodal Communication in Intercultural Interaction

Download or read book Multimodal Communication in Intercultural Interaction written by Ulrike Schröder and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-24 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together a range of perspectives on multimodal communication in intercultural interaction, bridging cognitive, social, and functional approaches towards promoting cross-disciplinary dialogues and taking research at the intersections of these fields into new directions. The volume assembles conversationalist, socially oriented, cognitive, and sensory approaches in considering culture as a dynamic construct, co-constituted and (re)negotiated among participants in interaction and filtering it through a multimodal lens, drawing on a range of examples, such as educational settings or online video platforms. Each chapter offers a unique perspective on "culture" and "intercultural," while also situating their own definitions of these labels against those of the other chapters. Taken together, the chapters form a fluid conversation on the nature of intercultural encounters in today’s globalizsd world, as digital environments intertwine with the physical mobility of people, encouraging researchers across these fields to adopt a more holistic multimodal perspective to approach intercultural interaction. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in intercultural communication, multimodality, sociolinguistics, cognitive and interactional linguistics, and semiotics.

Book Transmodal Communications

Download or read book Transmodal Communications written by Margaret R. Hawkins and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines semiotics, meaning-making and the co-construction of relations in transmodal communications. Through the lens of transpositioning – the multiple and interwoven layers of emplacements and positionings that are entailed in communications which cross and transcend the boundaries that have historically shaped our thinking about the world and its inhabitants – the chapters interrogate digital languaging and literacies, and how transmodal communications shape identities, belongings and relationships, with particular attention paid to issues of equity and social justice. The chapter authors consider both transmodalities and critical cosmopolitanism as they analyze empirical data from youth, adults and researchers participating in a project that digitally connects youth to share their lives across diverse and under-resourced global communities. In offering this multi-perspectival, multi-voiced volume, the authors portray and address methodological issues in researching transglobal transmodal communications.

Book Survival and Development of Language Communities

Download or read book Survival and Development of Language Communities written by F. Xavier Vila and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too small to be big, but also too big to be really small, medium-sized language communities (MSLCs) face their own challenges in a rapidly globalising world where multilingualism and mobility seem to be eroding the old securities that the monolingual nation states provided. The questions to be answered are numerous: What are the main areas in which the position of these languages is actually threatened? How do these societies manage their diversity (both old and new)? Has state machinery really become as irrelevant in terms of language policy as their portrayals often suggest? This book explores the responses to these and other challenges by seven relatively successful MSLCs, so that their lessons can be applied more generally to other languages striving for long term survival.
