We nearly died. We very nearly did, didn't we?" Samantha Heather Mackey couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort--a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other "Bunny," and seem to move and speak as one. But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled "Smut Salon," and finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door--ditching her only friend, Ava, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the Bunnies' sinister yet saccharine world, beginning to take part in the ritualistic off-campus "Workshop" where they conjure their monstrous creations, the edges of reality begin to blur. Soon, her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies will be brought into deadly collision. The spellbinding new novel from one of our most fearless chroniclers of the female experience, Bunny is a down-the-rabbit-hole tale of loneliness and belonging, friendship and desire, and the fantastic and terrible power of the imagination. Download or read book Quiet written by Susan Cain and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Experience the book that started the Quiet Movement and revolutionized how the world sees introverts—and how introverts see themselves—by offering validation, inclusion, and inspiration “Superbly researched, deeply insightful, and a fascinating read, Quiet is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to understand the gifts of the introverted half of the population.”—Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY People • O: The Oprah Magazine • Christian Science Monitor • Inc. • Library Journal • Kirkus Reviews At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society. In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, impeccably researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves. Now with Extra Libris material, including a reader’s guide and bonus content

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his adult life until his death in 1834, Coleridge made entries in more than sixty notebooks. With the support of the Coleridge estate, she embarked on a career of editing and publishing these volumes and was awarded with many honours for her work, including: a Leverhulme Award (1948), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1953), a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (1958), the Order of Canada (1974) and an honorary doctorate from her own university. Originally projected as a five volume set (each volume consisting of a book of text and a book of notes). First published in 2002. Volume 5 of the Text on the Notebooks of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, spanning from 1827 to 1834. The volume is in two parts, text and notes.

Book excerpt: THREE STARRED REVIEWS "Remarkable."--VOYA "Genre-defying."--Booklist "Deeply compelling."--BCCB "A beautiful, moving, and thoughtful story about how far we're willing to go for family." -Kathleen Glasgow, New York Times bestselling author of Girl in Pieces Vera Rivers' life is split in two: before her twin sister Ava disappeared twelve years ago and after. Before was hot Junes and ice cream trucks, dancing in sprinklers, loud Christmas mornings and pancakes on Saturdays. The after is everything else: police officers, investigators, tips, theories, leads, but never any answers. The case made headlines, shocked Vera's Northern California community, and turned her family into tragic celebrities. Now, at eighteen, Vera is counting down the days until she starts her new life at college in Portland, Oregon, far away from the dark cloud she and her family have lived under for twelve years. But all that changes when a girl shows up at the local hospital. Her name is Ava Rivers and she wants to go home. Ava's return begins to mend the fractures in the Rivers family. Vera and Ava's estranged older brother returns. Vera reconnects with Max, the sweet, artistic boy from her childhood. Their parents smile again. But the questions remain: Where was Ava all these years? And who is she now? Powerful and gripping, The Second Life of Ava Rivers is equal parts thriller, mystery, and haunting meditation on grief, family, and forgiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dear Ava, I loved your book.” —Award-winning actress Emma Watson For fans of Kathleen Glasgow and Amber Smith, Ava Dellaira writes about grief, love, and family with a haunting and often heartbreaking beauty in this emotionally stirring, critically acclaimed debut novel, Love Letters to the Dead. It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May did. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to people like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Amelia Earhart, Heath Ledger, and more—though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating new friendships, falling in love for the first time, learning to live with her splintering family. And, finally, about the abuse she suffered while May was supposed to be looking out for her. Only then, once Laurel has written down the truth about what happened to herself, can she truly begin to accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was—lovely and amazing and deeply flawed—can she begin to discover her own path.

Download or read book Dark Moon written by J. Risk and published by Jacqueline Paige. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ava had no last name that she knew of. She didn’t know who her father was. Her mother died when she was born—she knew nothing about her history. All she had were questions that no one could answer. Her memories were like clipped versions of videos that showed her a few parts but never told her enough. She didn’t age like others. In fact, she wasn’t sure how old she really was. Thirty years ago, she’d done something so horrific that she’d never told anyone. She’d killed the only person that had answers. Every moment since then had been spent trying not to do whatever it was she did again. She was some abomination with wings. Useless appendages that she couldn’t use and couldn’t fly with. She’d tried. The group of women she lived with were like her and born in the time of the Gemini. She didn’t even know what that meant. They were her family, and each day, she spent watching over them and doing whatever was needed to ensure they were safe. Except for the one week of the year, she was compelled to go back to that place that caused her more misery with each passing year. He had secrets. The kind that would get his powers blocked so he’d end up a decrepit old man with no purpose in any realm. He’d once sworn to protect a princess and had failed. When given a second chance, he swore to protect another princess. She was more than his charge. She was his friend. The secrets he kept from her would destroy her—and create a rift so wide in their realm that there would be no recovering from it. Years before, he had made a promise, and now he wasn’t sure he could keep it. The one that could complete him was unaware that he existed and had the answers she sought. His people would never accept her, so he was stuck between his heart and his loyalty. If he confessed to her, he would have to explain to his queen and her daughter that he had failed them and there was no coming back from it once he did. All he wanted, more than his next breath, was to tell her—everything. 6 worlds work together to save each other. J. Risk’s Realms Books span 6 different series with common characters and an ongoing, suspense-filled plot. Dark Moon is the 13th in the Realms Books
