  • Author : Andrew Ong
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2023-06-15

  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Stalemate written by Andrew Ong and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stalemate reveals the history and contemporary politics of the United Wa State Army (UWSA), Asia's strongest insurgent army on Myanmar's border with China. This ethnographic tale recounts how a highland group, often dismissed as rebels or narcotraffickers, maintains a relational autonomy between two powerful lowland states. The Wa polity engages rather than evades these surrounding states, yet struggles to fit into their registers of sovereignty and statehood. Andrew Ong examines political culture among Wa elites and people, UWSA external relations, and capital flows with neighboring China, showing how Wa autonomy is enacted through careful navigation of complex borderland geopolitics and the shadow economy. He analyzes the seeming stalemate between the Myanmar state and the UWSA as one of tactical dissonance—adopting simultaneous postures of authority and subordination and creating disruptions and connections. Stalemate illuminates how seemingly ambiguous and disorderly practices of political signaling, economic regulation, and military governance produce relative stability, challenging our assumptions about state-like processes at the peripheries.

Book Pornography Ideology and the Internet

Download or read book Pornography Ideology and the Internet written by Zhang Mei and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book starts from the discussion of a pornography, but does not end with pornography. Rather, it suggests that a pornographic star can be treated as a cultural product which obtains rich cultural meanings. It contributes to the debate between the global homogenization paradigm and the creolization paradigm which predominates in multiple disciplines, through a thorough examination of the entire process of the cross-cultural migration of Aoi Sola, a Japanese adult video (AV) actress who has achieved amazing popularity in mainland China since 2010. Through fifteen-month participant observation inside the two Chinese agencies of Sola, this study reveals that the transformative intermediaries play a significant role in the transformation of the cultural product in the Chinese context, even though their operations are usually invisible to outsiders. The findings challenge the conventional scholarly assumption that foreign products produced by global producers are consumed “directly” by local consumers or that the significance of these intermediaries can be ignored. This study further extends the participant observation inside the realistic field to the virtual space of media in different countries, which can be called the second field. It demonstrates that multiple local groups, including intermediaries, Chinese commercial news portals, Party media, and Chinese Internet users, respond to the dominant ideologies in Chinese society by reinterpreting Sola in different, even contradictory, ways. Thus, this research refutes the presumption that a local society is a coherent monolith in the acceptance of foreign cultural products. The book also deepens the reader’s understanding of Chinese Internet usage.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alice Pacher
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-03-17
  • ISBN : 9811684642
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book No Sex in Japan written by Alice Pacher and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a sociological perspective on (non-)sexual intimate relationships in contemporary Japan. The phenomenon of sexlessness in intimate relationships has gained increasing attention in popular culture. However, few scholarly investigations exist in examining this striking trend in Japan. This book presents an analysis of the socio-structural elements within both academic and public discourses in Japanese culture relating to sexlessness in intimate relationships. Drawing from original interview research, the author provides insights into individuals’ experiences and investigates the connection between sexual inactivity, sexuality and Japanese couples’ satisfaction and well-being in their relationships. The book discusses how work environment, childbirth, infertility treatments, as well as past sexual experiences, extramarital affairs, and both unmarried and married couple relationships influence individual sexual behavior and consciousness. A broad overview of the meaning of sexuality through a cultural comparison with discourses on sexuality and interview results in Germany and Austria is also provided. To this end, the book calls into question whether sexlessness is a unique Japanese phenomenon or whether parallels and similarities might also be found in Western societies. Bringing together academic and public discourses on sexless couples, this book engages a rethinking of the meaning of sexuality, love, intimacy and relationships, both in and outside of Japan. It is of interest to students and scholars of Japanese studies, gender, sexology and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Groundbreaking Guide to the HPV Vaccine and the Science, Safety, and Business Behind It Cancer strikes fear in people’s hearts around globe. So the appearance of a vaccine to prevent cancer–as we are assured the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will–seemed like a game-changer. Since 2006, over eighty countries have approved the vaccine, with glowing endorsements from the world’s foremost medical authorities. Bringing in over $2.5 billion in annual sales, the HPV vaccine is a pharmaceutical juggernaut. Yet scandal now engulfs it worldwide. The HPV Vaccine on Trial is a shocking tale, chronicling the global efforts to sell and compel this alleged miracle. The book opens with the vaccine’s invention, winds through its regulatory labyrinths, details the crushing denial and dismissal of reported harms and deaths, and uncovers the enormous profits pharma and inventors have reaped. Authors Holland, Mack Rosenberg, and Iorio drill down into the clinical trial data, government approvals, advertising, and personal accounts of egregious injuries that have followed in countries as far-flung as Japan, Australia, Colombia, India, Ireland, the U.K. and Denmark. The authors have written an unprecedented exposé about this vaunted vaccine. Written in plain language, the book is for everyone concerned – parents, patients, doctors, nurses, scientists, healthcare organizations, government officials, and schools. Ultimately, this book is not just about the HPV vaccine, but about how industry, government, and medical authorities may be putting the world’s children in harm’s way.

  • Pages : 321 pages

Book excerpt: “Couldn't be a bolder, more forthright SOS for sport” The Observer The world of sport has a new opponent: climate change. In recent years, a world championship marathon was held at midnight to avoid the blistering sun. Professional athletes needed oxygen tanks to play during wildfire season in California. Players collapsed and play was suspended amid the heat and bushfire smoke at the Australian Tennis open. Ski resorts in the Alps have turned into ghost towns. Golf courses are sinking into the sea. And then there's the Qatar World Cup, among the greatest follies in sporting history, one that saw hundreds (perhaps thousands) of heat-induced deaths before a ball was even kicked. The threat climate change poses to sport is clear, but with billions of participants and fans around the world who rely on the sector for entertainment, jobs, fitness and health, this is one industry we can't afford to lose. In this book, Madeleine Orr shows it doesn't have to be this way. There are ways to mitigate, and perhaps counter, even the worst elements of climate change. A world-leading sport ecologist, Madeleine interviews athletes, coaches, politicians and thought-leaders to learn more about the inevitable consequences for this trillion-dollar industry. From the frontlines of climate change, Warming Up takes readers through a play-by-play of how global warming is already impacting sport, and how the sports world can fight back.

Book Eastern Europeans in Contemporary Literature and Culture

Download or read book Eastern Europeans in Contemporary Literature and Culture written by Vedrana Veličković and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Europeans in Contemporary Literature and Culture: Imagining New Europe provides a comprehensive study of the way in which contemporary writers, filmmakers, and the media have represented the recent phenomenon of Eastern European migration to the UK and Western Europe following the enlargement of the EU in the 21st century, the social and political changes after the fall of communism, and the Brexit vote. Exploring the recurring figures of Eastern Europeans as a new reservoir of cheap labour, the author engages with a wide range of both mainstream and neglected authors, films, and programmes, including Rose Tremain, John Lanchester, Marina Lewycka, Polly Courtney, Dubravka Ugrešić, Kapka Kassabova, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Mike Phillips, It’s a Free World, Gypo, Britain’s Hardest Workers, The Poles are Coming, and Czech Dream. Analyzing the treatment of Eastern Europeans as builders, fruit pickers, nannies, and victims of sex trafficking, and ways of resisting the stereotypes, this is an important intervention into debates about Europe, migration, and postcommunist transition to capitalism, as represented in multiple contemporary cultural texts.

Book Bildung and Paideia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marie-Élise Zovko
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2021-06-23
  • ISBN : 100033578X
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book Bildung and Paideia written by Marie-Élise Zovko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bildung and Paideia examines traditional humanistic ideals in light of philosophical reflection on the need for education of the whole human being. The study of what it is to be human is traditionally the task of the humanities. In recent years, however, the humanities have been increasingly subordinated to technological, economic, and utilitarian aims. Do the humanities still have a fundamentally distinct task to fulfil in education? Today’s reduction of educational outcomes to measurable competencies and economically exploitable skills is opposed to traditional ideals like that of Greek paideia and the German Romantic concept of Bildung, which emphasized formation of the whole human being. The present volume takes as its point of departure the conviction that the study of ‘the human experience'—whether through philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history, or languages—has something specific to offer in the realm of education today. The individual contributions examine the specific role of philosophy and the humanities in education from ancient times to the present and explore possibilities for conceiving philosophical models of education. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory.
