Book excerpt: Le manuscrit conservé aujourd'hui au couvent dominicain de Sainte-Sabine à Rome et connu sous le nom de " Prototype " est un recueil de quatorze traités rassemblés par les Frères prêcheurs dans la seconde moitié du XIII° siècle sous la forme d'un gros volume déposé jusqu'à la Révolution française au couvent Saint-Jacques à Paris. Il constitue le point d'aboutissement d'un effort collectif entrepris par les Dominicains pour se doter d'usages liturgiques spécifiques et uniformes. Les critères qui ont présidé à la compilation permettent de placer celle-ci à côté des grandes sommes dominicaines du XIII° siècle, comme le Speculum Historiale de Vincent de Beauvais, la Légende dorée de Jacques de Voragine et la Summa theologica de Thomas d'Aquin. Les études réunies dans ce volume s'attachent aux contenus liturgiques du " Prototype " et à ses aspects paléographiques tout en les replaçant dans le contexte de la production liturgique dominicaine de son époque. Mais le choix des lectures - particulièrement significatif du point de vue de la recherche artistique et hagiographique contemporaine - est également abordé, tout comme la musicologie, le culte des saints et le regard sur la sainteté des Dominicains du XIIIe siècle. Une manière de remettre en cause l'appellation réductrice de " Prototype " créée au XIe siècle et de mieux montrer comment le manuscrit de Saint-Sabine est un document prestigieux tourné vers l'avenir.
