Download or read book River Teeth written by David James Duncan and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his passionate, luminous novels, David James Duncan has won the devotion of countless critics and readers, earning comparisons to Harper Lee, Tom Robbins, and J.D. Salinger, to name just a few. Now Duncan distills his remarkable powers of observation into this unique collection of short stories and essays. At the heart of Duncan's tales are characters undergoing the complex and violent process of transformation, with results both painful and wondrous. Equally affecting are his nonfiction reminiscences, the "river teeth" of the title. He likens his memories to the remains of old-growth trees that fall into Northwestern rivers and are sculpted by time and water. These experiences—shaped by his own river of time—are related with the art and grace of a master storyteller. In River Teeth, a uniquely gifted American writer blends two forms, taking us into the rivers of truth and make-believe, and all that lies in between.
Download or read book Autumn Equinox written by Jabbūr Duwayhī and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jabbour Douaihy's Autumn Equinox is the diary of a young man recently returned to his Lebanese village after attending college in the United States. It continues from the end of May through the September equinox of 1986, detailing his efforts to remake himself by his adjusting his reading, writing, and eating habits; his dress; his relationships. The diary begins with a description of an Israeli bombing in South Lebanon and ends with a description of refugee families fleeing to his village. Otherwise, the Lebanese Civil War intrudes very little into the narrative; however, violence is a constant undercurrent in the life of the village. America, is a far-away land of nostalgia. The village is here, at the center of the young man's narration, peopled by comic characters who insist on their unique identities and resist his attempts to be different. The Civil War and the Occupation, the author seems to be saying, are not the only sources of turmoil. Violence and revenge have long been part of the people's consciousness, and one might indeed need to redefine oneself in order to adapt to one's environment.
Download or read book The Joy Journal written by Laura Brand and published by Boxtree. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Fearne Cotton. The Joy Journal for Magical Everyday Play by Laura Brand showcases fifty engaging activities for creative, everyday playtime to encourage a connection to nature, sense of joy and bonding with your kids, while nurturing your own inner child too. The activities are mindful, creative and, crucially, very easy things to make and do with children that you will enjoy as much as they will. From moon sand to flower soup and nature wands there are short, long, loud and quiet activities to take you from morning to evening – each with a focus on the risk factors: volume of effort vs child engagement and mess. Laura Brand has been testing these while writing and raising her two-under-two, and shares the happy accidents and road blocks she’s hit along the way in honest, open and often funny introductions to each of the exercises. This beautiful handbook will help you to inject fun, mindfulness and craft into bath-times, rainy afternoons, long journeys and play dates and to resist (as much as possible!) the temptation to succumb to screen time. Chapters take you through the seasons, with indoor, outdoor and on-the-go activities that are easy and fun every day. The Joy Journal will arm you with a variety of fun, focussed activities made with store cupboard and easily foraged supplies that you can turn to time and again.

Download or read book San Bruno Mountain written by DOUG. ALLSHOUSE and published by Heyday Books. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deep dive into the Bay Area's ecological treasure trove--and how this wild mountain in our midst was saved. San Bruno Mountain, located in the center of the San Francisco Bay Area, is a four-square mile global treasure--a natural preserve touted by biologist E.O. Wilson as one of the world's rare biodiversity 'hot spots'. Bathed in fog and wind and preserved from destruction by the fierce work of local conservationists, this mountain offers visitors a glimpse of what San Francisco looked like before colonization. Drawing on years of visits, observations, and research to offer a comprehensive flora of the San Bruno Mountains and its endangered species, conservationists Doug Allshouse and David Nelson help us understand this unique and precious place from the point of view of the plants in this one-of-a-kind field guide. Detailing a total of 528 plant species (among them 316 natives), the authors also delve into the history of this living, changing habitat at the southern edge of San Francisco. The birds, butterflies, reptiles, geology, climate, dynamic changes, and political history of the preserve also feature in San Bruno Mountain. Even locals who have enjoyed hiking and viewing the mountain for years will be astonished at this book's revelations about the diversity and importance of this wild place.

Download or read book Highland Journal written by Jack P. Harland and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack’s love of hillwalking began with a trip to the North-West Highlands where he and his son, Tom, began to explore the extraordinary mountains of Coigach and Inverpolly. Now this experienced hillwalker and geographer writes Highland Journal, an illustrated memoir looking back on his adventures. Joining the Jolly Boys, an anarchic group of Munro baggers, Jack was initiated into the world of hillwalking. Highland Journal records his adventures, the geology, the natural history and the idiosyncrasies of his climbing companions. With hair-raising moments such as walks in the deep snows of the Highland winter using crampons and ice axe and a mountain rescue on the Cuillin of Skye, readers witness the author’s transition from wide-eyed hillwalking novice to competent mountaineer. Illustrated with Jack’s own drawings and watercolours, Highland Journal also includes distinctive relief maps of each mountain climbed. The book will appeal to hillwalkers and Munro baggers, as well as readers interested in landscape and wildlife and lovers of adventure.
