Book Automorphisms and Equivalence Relations in Topological Dynamics

Download or read book Automorphisms and Equivalence Relations in Topological Dynamics written by David B. Ellis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the role that automorphisms and equivalence relations play in the algebraic theory of minimal sets provides an original treatment of some key aspects of abstract topological dynamics. Such an approach is presented in this lucid and self-contained book, leading to simpler proofs of classical results, as well as providing motivation for further study. Minimal flows on compact Hausdorff spaces are studied as icers on the universal minimal flow M. The group of the icer representing a minimal flow is defined as a subgroup of the automorphism group G of M, and icers are constructed explicitly as relative products using subgroups of G. Many classical results are then obtained by examining the structure of the icers on M, including a proof of the Furstenberg structure theorem for distal extensions. This book is designed as both a guide for graduate students, and a source of interesting new ideas for researchers.

Book Topological Dynamics of Enveloping Semigroups

Download or read book Topological Dynamics of Enveloping Semigroups written by Anima Nagar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the theory of enveloping semigroups—an important tool in the field of topological dynamics—introduced by Robert Ellis. The book deals with the basic theory of topological dynamics and touches on the advanced concepts of the dynamics of induced systems and their enveloping semigroups. All the chapters in the book are well organized and systematically dealing with introductory topics through advanced research topics. The basic concepts give the motivation to begin with, then the theory, and finally the new research-oriented topics. The results are presented with detailed proof, plenty of examples and several open questions are put forward to motivate for future research. Some of the results, related to the enveloping semigroup, are new to the existing literature. The enveloping semigroups of the induced systems is considered for the first time in the literature, and some new results are obtained. The book has a research-oriented flavour in the field of topological dynamics.

Book Topological Entropy and Equivalence of Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Topological Entropy and Equivalence of Dynamical Systems written by Roy L. Adler and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1979 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to prove a theorem for topological entropy analogous to Ornstein's result for measure entropy. For this a natural class of dynamical systems is needed to play the same role for topological entropy as the Bernoulli shifts do for measure entropy. Fortunately there is just such a class--the topological Markov shifts. The main result of this paper is that topological entropy along with another number, called the ergodic period, is a complete set of invariants under this new equivalence relation for the class of topological Markov shifts.

Book Polynomials and the mod 2 Steenrod Algebra Volume 2 Representations of GL n F2

Download or read book Polynomials and the mod 2 Steenrod Algebra Volume 2 Representations of GL n F2 written by Grant Walker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to link the mod 2 Steenrod algebra, a classical object of study in algebraic topology, with modular representations of matrix groups over the field F of two elements. The link is provided through a detailed study of Peterson's `hit problem' concerning the action of the Steenrod algebra on polynomials, which remains unsolved except in special cases. The topics range from decompositions of integers as sums of 'powers of 2 minus 1', to Hopf algebras and the Steinberg representation of GL(n, F). Volume 1 develops the structure of the Steenrod algebra from an algebraic viewpoint and can be used as a graduate-level textbook. Volume 2 broadens the discussion to include modular representations of matrix groups.

Book Surveys in Combinatorics 2024

Download or read book Surveys in Combinatorics 2024 written by Felix Fischer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains nine survey articles by the invited speakers of the 30th British Combinatorial Conference, held at Queen Mary University of London in July 2024. Each article provides an overview of recent developments in a current hot research topic in combinatorics. Topics covered include: Latin squares, Erdős covering systems, finite field models, sublinear expanders, cluster expansion, the slice rank polynomial method, and oriented trees and paths in digraphs. The authors are among the world's foremost researchers on their respective topics but their surveys are accessible to nonspecialist readers: they are written clearly with little prior knowledge assumed and with pointers to the wider literature. Taken together these surveys give a snapshot of the research frontier in contemporary combinatorics, helping researchers and graduate students in mathematics and theoretical computer science to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Book C Algebraic Geometry with Corners

Download or read book C Algebraic Geometry with Corners written by Kelli Francis-Staite and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schemes in algebraic geometry can have singular points, whereas differential geometers typically focus on manifolds which are nonsingular. However, there is a class of schemes, 'C∞-schemes', which allow differential geometers to study a huge range of singular spaces, including 'infinitesimals' and infinite-dimensional spaces. These are applied in synthetic differential geometry, and derived differential geometry, the study of 'derived manifolds'. Differential geometers also study manifolds with corners. The cube is a 3-dimensional manifold with corners, with boundary the six square faces. This book introduces 'C∞-schemes with corners', singular spaces in differential geometry with good notions of boundary and corners. They can be used to define 'derived manifolds with corners' and 'derived orbifolds with corners'. These have applications to major areas of symplectic geometry involving moduli spaces of J-holomorphic curves. This work will be a welcome source of information and inspiration for graduate students and researchers working in differential or algebraic geometry.
