Book excerpt: Pour représenter au mieux le fonctionnement dynamique d'un processus, une approche globale basée sur de multiples modèles LTI (linéaires ou affines) autour de différents points de fonctionnement est utilisée. Cette approche multimodèle est une représentation polytopique convexe pouvant être obtenue, soit directement à partir d'un modèle mathématique non linéaire, soit par transformation mathématique, soit par linéarisation autour de différents points de fonctionnement. Basé essentiellement sur la deuxième méthode de Lyapunov et la formulation LMI, Multimodèles en automatique se concentre sur l'analyse de la stabilité et la synthèse de correcteurs/observateurs. Le cas des multimodèles incertains avec des entrées inconnues est étudié et les fonctions de Lyapunov quadratiques et non quadratiques sont également considérées. Afin de réduire le pessimisme de la méthode quadratique, l'étude de stabilité des multimodèles est réalisée en considérant des fonctions de Lyapunov non quadratiques.

Idempotent linear algebra studies the properties of the semirn- ules An , n E N , over a semiring A with idempotent addition; in other words, it studies systems of equations that are linear in an idempotent semiring. Pr- ably the first interesting and nontrivial idempotent semiring , namely, that of all languages over a finite alphabet, as well as linear equations in this sern- ing, was examined by S. Kleene [107] in 1956 . This noncommutative semiring was used in applications to compiling and parsing (see also [1]) . Accordingly, the volume includes survey papers together with presentations of some recent results. An important feature of the school (and consequently of the volume) was its really "international" character since it brought together leading control theoriests from West and East. All together the school was attended by 108 participants from 18 countries. During the school 21 one-hour invited lectures were delivered. Moreover, five half-an-hour talks were given and 30 contributions were presented in frames of poster sessions. This has been motivated by the desire to establish the problems of control law synthesis and full state estimation in numerical terms. In recent years, a general approach based on multiple LTI models (linear or affine) around various function points has been proposed. This so-called multiple model approach is a convex polytopic representation, which can be obtained either directly from a nonlinear mathematical model, through mathematical transformation or through linearization around various function points. This book concentrates on the analysis of the stability and synthesis of control laws and observations for multiple models. The authors’ approach is essentially based on Lyapunov’s second method and LMI formulation. Uncertain multiple models with unknown inputs are studied and quadratic and non-quadratic Lyapunov functions are also considered.
