Book excerpt: The 'end-on' ultrasonic crack measurement technique has been refined and perfected to provide reliable automatic sensing and read out of the maximum crack depth and its location for each crack encountered as the probe moves in a helical path down the cannon tube. A mechanical scanning machine has been constructed and tested which inspects full length 105 millimeter cannon. An ultrasonic flaw detector senses, measures and continuously reads out the distance from the outside surface to the crack tip or bore surface. Digital logic circuits evaluate successive measurements and determine the maximum crack depth reading. This data is transferred to a data acquisition system.

A program to study the propagation of these cracks required a non-destructive inspection technique to locate cracks and measure their depth at frequent intervals during testing. Watervliet Arsenal has developed an unusual method of ultrasonic inspection to perform this function using the sound energy reflected from a crack tip. An evaluation of the sensitivity of detection and accuracy of measurement of cracks is presented. Scanning the outside diameter of the cylinder with an ultrasonic normal-probe produces a response that can be readily interpreted in terms of crack depth, location, length and orientation. The method has also been successfully applied in the inspection of cannon tubes. Experience to date is limited to high strength steel cylinders with cracks 0.050 to 2.000 in. deep. However, with additional development, the technique offers possible application to other materials and configurations. At present all inspections are made and data recorded manually but an automatic system appears feasible and is currently under development. (Author).

The growth of each crack is observed throughout the fatigue life test. The cannons may be fatigued either by hydraulic cycling or firing, or both. Crack location and orientation are measured by a locator which has been designed to provide digital position data while operating on the surface of a cylinder (breech of the cannon). Crack depth is measured electronically using integrated circuits. A Data Acquisition System has been designed to scan the binary coded decimal transducer outputs, format the data, and record on IBM compatible magnetic tape. The circuits used in the crack depth measurement are believed to be unique and patents are being applied for. One of these is a gated, synchronized, inverter chain oscillator operating at 11.6 MHz.
