Book excerpt: This document describes the Software Configuration Management (SCM) approach and procedures to be utilized in ensuring and controlling the development process of the Automated Transportation Management System (ATMS). The sponsor has identified ATMS and its components as unclassified and non-sensitive. The configuration management procedures are necessary to ensure that any changes made to software and related documentation are consistent with ATMS goals and objectives and contained securely in a central library. The objectives of the Plan are to (1) Establish product baselines that support the change process; (2) Ensure that all system changes support ATMS goals and objectives; (3) Ensure that the potential impacts of system changes are adequately evaluated prior to implementation; (4) Ensure that the latest approved versions of all software are being used in all environments (current production, development and future production); (5) Establish a configuration status reporting standard that informs pertinent individuals of ATMS system status; (6) Ensure that the baselines always remain current with the production software and documentation; (7) Ensure that configuration management is integrated with other management plans designed to meet the overall objectives and goals of ATMS; and (8) Ensure that the configuration library function of maintaining all master copies of documentation and software for each product is supported.

Book excerpt: The Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) developed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is a critical tool in transportation management centers (TMCs) across Texas. User acceptance often depends on how easy or useful the software is to use. This interaction is typically controlled by the user interface. This report details an evaluation of the TxDOT A TMS product. In general, the A TMS client screens conform well to accepted design principles for user interfaces. While slight problems were identified at a number of locations, the overall user interface is excellent and provides an operator with the ability to quickly enter information and examine the status of the roadway and field devices. In comparison, the A TMS data entry screens were not as polished and suffer from a number of common user interface problems that lead to confusion. This confusion could lead to incorrect data entry and incorrect configuration of the ATMS product.

The impetus behind the development of the OS & D stems from a subtask created to expand the usefulness of the Automated Transportation Management System (ATMS). This subtask supports the development of individual modules covering three important areas: household goods movement, damage claims, and single rate. The OS & D will employ ATMS to perform two transportation management functions: to (a) enter and modify claims-related data related to over, short, or damaged shipments, and to (b) generate letters and reports. The purpose of this document is to define the system requirements necessary to implement and integrate computer support for these business processes into the ATMS. This software requirements specification (SRS) will serve as direct input to the detailed design. The acceptance criteria section in this document will serve as the driving force in the development of test plans. To fulfill these objectives, the SRS must contain complete and verifiable requirements. This SRS provides the ATMS software developers a concise definition of the system software requirements. By emphasizing functions to be performed, rather than system architecture, the SRS will not be restrictive and will allow maximum flexibility during system design. The general structure of this document is to progress from a description of the OS & D to the specific software requirements necessary to support its' functionality.
