Book Automated Teller Machine Network Market Structure and Cash Usage

Download or read book Automated Teller Machine Network Market Structure and Cash Usage written by Heli Snellman and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study discusses the effects of the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) network market structure on the availability of cash withdrawal ATM services and cash usage. The aim and novelty of the study is to construct the ATM equation. The study also contributes to the earlier discussion on the effects of ATMs on cash usage. The monopolisation of ATM network market structure and its effects on the number of ATMs and on cash in circulation are analysed both theoretically and empirically. The unique annual data set on 20 countries used in the estimations has been combined from various data sources. The observation period is 1988-2003, but the data on some countries are available only for a shorter period. Based on our theoretical discussion, as well as the estimation results, monopolisation of the ATM network market structure is associated with a smaller number of ATMs. Furthermore, the influence of the number of ATMs on cash in circulation is ambiguous.

Book Regulating Communication Technology

Download or read book Regulating Communication Technology written by William B. Trautman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research establishes a framework for analyzing the regulation of evolving communication technologies with a case study of automated teller machines (ATMs). The high fixed cost of communication technology may provide a basis for regulatory intervention, because it may enable large firms to gain a competitive advantage over small firms; it may also lead to efficiency. The regulatory issue is whether laws should be enacted that give competing firms access to existing technology, thus protecting the market share of small firms and enabling them to compete more equitably with large firms. Mandatory-access laws can impose a cost on society, however, by slowing the diffusion of technology and postponing the benefits associated with new communication services. This research provides empirical evidence that communication services are differentiated to a varying degree by location, suggesting that product differentiation may be relevant to regulation of mandatory access. The study presents a logistics model of ATM adoption by commercial banks. The model shows that the degree to which banks are differentiated on the dimension of location is an important determinant of ATM adoption, and that characterizations of competition that do not incorporate a measure of differentiation are not as good at predicting ATM adoption.

Book Adoption of Technologies with Network Effects

Download or read book Adoption of Technologies with Network Effects written by Garth Saloner and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on networks suggests that the value of a network is positively affected by the number of geographically dispersed locations it serves (the "network effect") and the number of its users (the "production scale effect"). We show that as a result a firm's expected time until adoption of technologies with network effects declines in both users and locations. We provide empirical evidence on the adoption of automated teller machines by banks that is consistent with this prediction. Using standard duration models, we find that a bank's date of adoption is decreasing in the number of its branches (a proxy for the number of locations and hence for the network effect) and the value of its deposits (a proxy for number of users and hence for production scale economies). The network effect is the larger of the two effects.
