Book Validation of Automated Threshold Audiometry

Download or read book Validation of Automated Threshold Audiometry written by Faheema Mahomed and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for hearing health care services across the world far outweighs the capacity to deliver these services with the present shortage of hearing health care personnel. Automated test procedures coupled with telemedicine may assist in extending services. Automated threshold audiometry has existed for many decades: however, there has been a lack of systematic evidence supporting its clinical use. The aim of this study was to systematically review the current body of peer-reviewed publications on the validity (test-retest reliability and accuracy) of automated threshold audiometry. A meta-analysis was thereafter conducted to combine and quantify the results of individual reports so that an overall assessment of validity based on existing evidence could be made for automated threshold audiometry. A systematic literature review and meta-analysis was conducted using peerreviewed publications. A multifaceted approach, covering several databases and employing different search strategies, was utilized to ensure comprehensive coverage and crosschecking of search findings. Publications were obtained using the following three databases: Medline, SCOPUS and PubMed, and by inspecting the reference list of relevant reports. Reports were selected based according to inclusion and an exclusion criterion, thereafter data extraction was conducted. Subsequently, the meta-analysis combined and quantified data to determine the validity of automated threshold audiometry. In total, 29 articles met the inclusion criteria. The outcomes from these studies indicated that two types of automated threshold testing procedures have been utilized, the method of limits' and method of adjustments'. Reported findings suggest accurate and reliable thresholds when utilizing automated audiometry. Most of the reports included data on adult populations using air conduction testing, limited data on children, bone conduction testing and the effects of hearing status on automated threshold testing were however reported. The meta-analysis revealed that test-retest reliability for automated threshold audiometry was within typical testretest reliability for manual audiometry. Furthermore, the meta-analysis showed comparable overall average differences between manual and automated air conduction audiometry (0.4 dB, 6.1 SD) compared to test-retest differences for manual (1.3 dB, 6.1 SD) and automated (0.3 dB, 6.9 SD) air conduction audiometry. Overall, no significant differences (p>0.01: Summarized Data ANOVA) were obtained in any of the comparisons between test-retest reliability (manual and automated) and accuracy. Current evidence demonstrates that automated threshold audiometry can produce an accurate measure of hearing threshold. The differences between automated and manual audiometry fall within typical test-retest and inter-tester variability. Despite its long history however, validation is still limited for (i) automated bone conduction audiometry: (ii) automated audiometry in children and difficult-to-test populations and: (iii) automated audiometry with different types and degrees of hearing loss.

Book THE PURE TONE AIR CONDUCTION AUDIOGRAM

Download or read book THE PURE TONE AIR CONDUCTION AUDIOGRAM written by and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many U. S. Air Force Flight Surgeons, medical officers, and others concerned with the conduct of hearing conservation programs have expressed the need for a set of guidelines to be used in the interpretation of audiometric data. Although the air conduction audiogram does not provide sufficient information to allow a definitive diagnosis to be made, it usually gives an indication as to whether a hearing loss is conductive or sensorineural in origin. In addition, determination may be made from the audiogram as to what further testing should be carried out and what action may be necessary to prevent further hearing loss. A method for interpretation of audiometric data is presented. An explanation of the various audiometric contours is given, followed by a step-by-step procedure for analyzing the pure-tone audiogram. In addition, recommendations are made concerning the handling of patients whose audiograms are not within normal limits. Utilization of these procedures within a compreshensive program of hearing testing, noise control, and education is recommended wherever personnel work in hazardous noise. They should also be helpful in dealing with other types of hearing losses. (Author).

  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Telepractice in Audiology written by Emma Rushbrooke and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telepractice in Audiology provides practical information to audiologists to enable the development and delivery of a successful telepractice program. Specifically, the text discusses the technological requirements (e.g., videoconferencing equipment, remote programming software options, Internet connections, etc.), applications and models of service delivery in audiology, policy and regulatory issues, as well as future directions in the field. The use of telepractice technology, specifically the Internet and remote programming software, has the potential to improve equity of access to services and reduce the burden placed on families. Program reports, outcomes, and publications that are emerging demonstrate the ability to offer sophisticated audiological assessments with reliable outcomes. This text provides the knowledge and skills required to implement a telepractice program that could provide a range of audiological services from diagnostics to intervention and habilitation/rehabilitation. Further, different models of service delivery are presented, thus demonstrating the flexibility of a telepractice approach. Telepractice in Audiology is a useful resource for practicing clinicians as well as students training to be audiologists. In addition, teachers of the deaf, speech-language pathologists, IT support persons, and other individuals interested in the application of, or endeavoring to implement, teleaudiology programs will also benefit from this text.

Book excerpt: This book is an original scholarly book that introduces the concept of preventive audiology, with a specific focus on the African context, which is in line with the South African re-engineered primary healthcare strategy as well as the World Health Organisation’s approach. The book reflects on contextually relevant and responsive evidence-based perspectives, grounded in an African context on preventive audiology, in four major ear and hearing burdens of disease within the South African context: (1) early hearing detection and intervention, (2) middle ear pathologies, (3) ototoxicity, and (4) noise-induced hearing loss. The book represents innovative research, seen from both a South African and global perspective. It offers new discourse and argues for a paradigm shift in how audiology is theorised and performed, particularly in low-and-middle-income country contexts. The goal of this book is to motivate a paradigm shift in how the ear and hearing care is approached within this low-and-middle-income country context while arguing for Afrocentric best practice evidence that leads to next practice.
