Download or read book Mass Spectrometry in Sports Drug Testing written by Mario Thevis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-12-13 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enables you to detect, identify, and characterize hundreds of drugs that may be used by athletes Mass spectrometry has become essential to sports drug testing. This book examines both the principles of sports drug testing and the use of mass spectrometry techniques and mass spectral data to detect, identify, and characterize hundreds of known and unknown drugs that athletes may use to enhance their performance. The author provides a detailed overview of the mass spectrometry of numerous classes of therapeutics and agents, various analyzers to detect low- and high-molecular weight drugs, as well as techniques to discriminate between endogenously produced and synthetically derived compounds. Mass Spectrometry in Sports Drug Testing begins with a full chapter dedicated to the history of sports drug testing. Next, the book provides the principles and techniques needed to maximize the specificity and sensitivity of mass spectrometric assays, including: Detailed, step-by-step assays with sample preparation Discussion of both chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric analysis Characterization of analytes in order to unequivocally identify banned substances Mass spectrometric behavior of low- and high-molecular weight analytes Throughout the book, descriptive examples illustrate the principles, advantages, and limitations of different assays. Mass Spectrometry in Sports Drug Testing not only sets forth the role mass spectrometry plays in detecting drug use among athletes, it also adds new insights into the health and ethical issues of doping in sports.

Download or read book OZONE written by Velio Bocci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxygen-Ozone therapy is a complementary approach less known than homeopathy and acupuncture because it has come of age only three decades ago. This book clarifies that, in the often nebulous field of natural medicine, the biological bases of ozone therapy are totally in line with classical biochemistry, physiological and pharmacological knowledge. Ozone is an oxidizing molecule, a sort of super active oxygen, which, by reacting with blood components generates a number of chemical messengers responsible for activating crucial biological functions such as oxygen delivery, immune activation, release of hormones and induction of antioxidant enzymes, which is an exceptional property for correcting the chronic oxidative stress present in atherosclerosis, diabetes and cancer. Moreover, by inducing nitric oxide synthase, ozone therapy may mobilize endogenous stem cells, which will promote regeneration of ischemic tissues. The description of these phenomena offers the first comprehensive picture for understanding how ozone works and why. When properly used as a real drug within therapeutic range, ozone therapy does not only does not procure adverse effects but yields a feeling of wellness. Half the book describes the value of ozone treatment in several diseases, particularly cutanious infection and vascular diseases where ozone really behaves as a “wonder drug”. The book has been written for clinical researchers, physicians and ozone therapists, but also for the layman or the patient interested in this therapy.

Download or read book High Altitude Physiology and Medicine written by W. Brendel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High altitude physiology and medicine has again become important. The excep tional achievements of mountaineers who have climbed nearly all peaks over 8,000 m without breathing equipment raise the question of maximal adaptation ca pacity of man to low oxygen pressures. More importantly, the increase in tourism in the Andes and the Himalayas brings over 10,000 people to sites at altitudes above 4,000 and 5,000 m each year. At such heights several kinds of high alti tude diseases are likely to occur, and these complications require detailed medical investigations. Medical authorities need to inform both mountaineers and tourists as to how great a physical burden can be taken in the mountain environment without risk to health. Physicians need to know what kind of prophylaxis is to be employed at high altitudes to prevent the development of diseases and what therapeutic measures should be used once high altitude diseases have occurred. Moreover, the physical condition of the indigenous population living at higher altitudes such as the Andes and the Himalayas, who are exposed continuously to the stress of high altitude, requires our attention. We have become familiar with symptoms characteristic of chronic high-altitude disease: under special conditions this popu lation has a tendency to develop pulmonary hypertension, which is associated with pulmonary edema, pulmonary congestion, and right heart failure.
Download or read book Breast Reconstruction with Autologous Tissue written by Hisham Fansa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the various techniques available for autologous breast reconstruction, be it breast conserving therapy (BCT) or reconstruction following total mastectomy with local and distant flaps. Divided into two parts, the first presents the anatomy of the breast and the general requirements with regard to this kind of surgery. In turn, the second addresses reconstructive breast surgery management. The authors present oncoplastic procedures for reconstructing the breast following small defects due to cancer or other conditions (BCT), as well as the use of microvascular free flaps, such as abdominal, thigh or gluteal-based flaps, for a complete reconstruction. Preventive reconstructive surgery and cutting-edge techniques, such as lipofilling or breast reconstruction together with lymph node transplantation, are also included. Written by leading international plastic surgeons and combining step-by-step explanations and detailed illustrations, this book clearly demonstrates that reconstructive procedures can have aesthetic outcomes

Download or read book New Concepts on Abdominoplasty and Further Applications written by Juarez M. Avelar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-24 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the important advances that have been achieved in abdominoplasty over the past 15 years, in particular through the introduction of a nontraumatic approach associated with minimal morbidity owing to the avoidance of resection of abdominal panniculus and damage to the perforating vessels. The surgical principles of this procedure, including in combination with liposuction, are fully described by its developer, Juarez Avelar, with the aid of a wealth of color illustrations. A miniabdominoplasty option is also discussed and recent significant technical contributions such as various new plication techniques and means of minimizing complications are clearly presented. In addition, a series of chapters explain how the surgical principles underlying the described nontraumatic method of abdominoplasty can now be applied to other areas of the body, for example to improve rhytidoplasty, ear reconstruction, body contouring, and medial thigh lifting. This book enables the plastic surgeon to apply the latest abdominoplasty techniques effectively and safely.
