Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bone marrow transplantation has emerged as a major form of treatment for a broad range of human diseases. Marrow transplantation has many unique biologic features and its principles differ markedly from the transplantation of solid organs. This volume overviews the present status of bone marrow transplantation and summarizes recent progress and controversies. Ad vances in defining the underlying biology of marrow transplantation are discussed. The current status of several major clinical problem areas are reviewed, including engraftment, acute and chronic graft-versus-host dis ease, immunodeficiency, and opportunistic infections. The therapeutic role of allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplantation is discussed, and results are compared with alternative therapies. lX List of contributors ANASETII, CLAUDIO, M. Download or read book False Hope written by Richard A. Rettig and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, a promising new treatment for breast cancer emerged: high-dose chemotherapy with autologous bone marrow transplantation or HDC/ABMT. By the 1990s, it had burst upon the oncology scene and disseminated rapidly before having been carefully evaluated. By the time published studies showed that the procedure was ineffective, more than 30,000 women had received the treatment, shortening their lives and adding to their suffering. This book tells of the rise and demise of HDC/ABMT for metastatic and early stage breast cancer, and fully explores the story's implications, which go well beyond the immediate procedure, and beyond breast cancer, to how we in the United States evaluate other medical procedures, especially life-saving ones. It details how the factors that drove clinical use--patient demand, physician enthusiasm, media reporting, litigation, economic exploitation, and legislative and administrative mandates--converged to propel the procedure forward despite a lack of proven clinical effectiveness. It also analyzes the limited effect of technology assessments before randomized clinical trials evaluated decisively the procedure and the ramifications of this system on healthcare today. Sections of the book consider the initial conditions surrounding the emergence of the new breast cancer treatment, the drivers of clinical use, and the struggle for evidence-based medicine. A concluding section considers the significance of the story for our healthcare system.

Book Reassessment of Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantion

Download or read book Reassessment of Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantion written by H. Handelsman and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autologous bone marrow transplantation (AMBT) is a process in which a portion of a patient's marrow is obtained and stored for future infusion. Clinical trials employing ABMT have demonstrated that its use can successfully rescue some patients and provide complete hematologic recovery. In some cases af Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkins's lymphoma, neuroblastoma, and acute leukemia, a number of patients, who would not have been expected to survive conventional therapy, have achieved long-term survival following AMBT. The clinical trials published to date have not provided definitive evidence of the benefit af AMBT for the treatment of acute leukemia in relapse, chronic granulocytic leukemia, or solid tumors other than neuroblastoma.
