Book The Life and Photography of Doris Ulmann

Download or read book The Life and Photography of Doris Ulmann written by Philip Walker Jacobs and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doris Ulmann (1882-1934) was one of the foremost photographers of the twentieth century, yet until now there has never been a biography of this fascinating, gifted artist. Born into a New York Jewish family with a tradition of service, Ulmann sought to portray and document individuals from various groups that she feared would vanish from American life. In the last eighteen years of her life, Ulmann created over 10,000 photographs and illustrated five books, including Roll, Jordan, Roll and Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands. Inspired by the paintings of the European old masters and by the photographs of Hill and Adamson and Clarence White, Ulmann produced unique and substantial portrait studies. Working in her Park Avenue studio and traveling throughout the east coast, Appalachia, and the deep South, she carefully studied and photographed the faces of urban intellectuals as well as rural peoples. Her subjects included Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, African American basket weavers from South Carolina, and Kentucky mountain musicians. Relying on newly discovered letters, documents, and photographs—many published here for the first time—Philip Jacobs's richly illustrated biography secures Ulmann's rightful place in the history of American photography.

Book The British Library Catalogue of Additions to the Manuscripts the G K Chesterton Papers

Download or read book The British Library Catalogue of Additions to the Manuscripts the G K Chesterton Papers written by British Library and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) is now best remembered as the creator of the priest-detective, Father Brown, whose use of paradox in the solving of crimes was but one aspect of the paradox which lay behind G.K. Chesterton himself and is evident in his writings in many fields. This catalogue describes the collection bought from the Chesterton trustees after the death of his secretary, Dorothy Collins. It includes a comprehensive selection of manuscripts of his novels, biographies, Christian apologetics, his long series of perceptive articles for the Illustrated London News and other journals, including The New Witness and G.K.'s Weekly, in which his philosophy of a third way, distributism, was set out. The archive also includes juvenilia, correspondence and sketches for his illustrations to Hillaire Belloc's novels.

Book What If Our World Is Their Heaven

Download or read book What If Our World Is Their Heaven written by Gwen Lee and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2002-12-31 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interviews with the genius behind The Man in the High Castle and countless other science fiction classics. In the field of science fiction, Philip K. Dick is unparalleled. His novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? became the classic film Blade Runner. His short story “The Minority Report” was adapted for the screen by Steven Spielberg. The Man in the High Castle has become a hit series on Amazon, and those titles represent only a small fraction of his work. In November 1982, six months before the author’s untimely death, journalist Gwen Lee recorded the first of several in-depth discussions with Philip K. Dick that continued over the course of the next three months. This transcription is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the field of science fiction. “These transcripts bring fresh insights—notably, into the imaginative biotech plot line of the unwritten The Owl in Daylight . . . Dick also discusses music, writing, philosophers and his 1974–1975 mystical visions, when the revelation of his son’s undiagnosed birth defect—‘down to anatomical details’—saved the child’s life . . . Fans will rejoice.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago, 1949. She was a 24 year-old college graduate hoping for a career as an actress while waiting for Mr. Right. He was 35, 510, a medical student, handsome and smart. Soon he would leave for his internship in Brooklyn, but he didnt want to go alone. They met, and Bam! He was exactly what shed been waiting for. Now I know why Mama, Taught me to be true. She meant me for someone, Exactly Like You. It was a perfect match. Or was it? It doesnt take long to realize that The Promise at the Dairy Queen is more a commitment to self than any bond made with another human being. Although Dorothys memoirs take place firmly in an era of change, they come from the spirit of a girl-becomes-woman whos inner self is stronger than the definition of the times in which she lives. Hers is an inspirational story of identity vs social and family expectations. Dorothy is a double swirl with toppings in a special cone and reading her is just as satisfying. Lynn Rosen-Bright, Poet, Playwright.
