Download or read book Jones Very written by Jones Very and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very, a New England Transcendentalist and a protege of Ralph Waldo Emerson, is one of the underrated American poets of the nineteenth century. Though he attracted a select audience in his day, serious study of Very's work in this century has been hampered by the lack of a complete, convenient, and reliable edition of his poetry. Perhaps even more discouraging to readers of older collections of Very's poems has been the puzzling variance in the style and quality of the verse. This edition, in which the poems are dated and chronologically arranged, reveals the three stages of Very's poetic development, out of which the distinctive genius of the second period clearly emerges. Written under the influence of a powerful psychological/spiritual experience, the ecstatic utterances of this period are by turns breathless in their intensity and tranquil in their serene contentment.

  • Publisher : LifeRich Publishing
  • Release : 2021-11-10
  • ISBN : 148973855X
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book A Burnt Child written by Jason Draper and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conspiring men have, do, and will continue to take advantage of each other because of our humanity, and history shows the worst offenders are not those who claim to do us any harm, but those who claim they are trying to do us good. The solution is not to cancel our goodness. The cure is not to have less of any of these good things. The cure is to balance it with more knowledge and more truth. Whatever “truth” is given by our churches, governments, and the media, can be measured by passing it through the fire. If it survives, we can accept it. If it doesn't, we can choose not to be burned again. It doesn't deserve our humanity and can and ought to perish.

Book Harbors Flows and Migrations

Download or read book Harbors Flows and Migrations written by Anna De Biasio and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poised between the land and the sea, enabling the dynamic flow of people and goods, while also figuratively representing a safe place of rest and refuge, the harbor constitutes a liminal, ambivalent space par excellence that has been central to the American imagination and history since the early colonial days. From the mythical tales of discovery and foundation to the endless flows of migrants, through the dark pages of the slave trade and the imperialistic dream of an ever-expanding nation, harbors, both as a trope and as physical spaces, powerfully signify the American experience. Today, at a time when ideas of border protection and policing gain political prominence in the U.S. and elsewhere, harbors and the constellation of meanings they subsume have become an even more crucial object of critical inquiry. In this volume, thirty-two American Studies scholars from around the world interrogate the manifold significance of ports and of the exchanges they enable or restrain, casting a decentered look onto the complex positioning of the United States in its political, ideological, and cultural relationships with the rest of the world. This collection thus offers a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary investigation of the U.S.A., engaging the most recent trends in American Studies and actively participating in the international and transnational reconfiguration of the field.
