Book excerpt: After the Brownings met the American sculptor William Wetmore Story and his wife Emelyn in 1849, the two couples developed a close friendship that would last throughout their lives. This letter is one in an extensive series exchanged between the two families from late 1853 to 1854. In November 1853, the Storys' children fell ill; when six-year-old Joseph died, nine-year-old Edith was removed to the care of the Brownings. The young girl's recovery was slow and difficult and caused her parents great anxiety. Here, writing after the reappearance of the child's fever had caused the Story family to leave Rome, Robert Browning expresses his pleasure that Edith seems to be out of imminent danger. He expresses his confidence in the prominent Roman physician Pantaleoni, and attempts to assuage the Storys' concerns about the doctor's skill. Browning also notes that Elizabeth Barrett Browning had been quite nervous for the Storys, but is doing well after hearing about Edith's progress. Other sections of this long missive report on Browning's travels and provide literary gossip.

A self- styled agnostic, Linton excited great controversy when she published in 1872 the novel The true history of Joshua Davidson, Christian and Communist, in which she severely criticised the Church of England for what she saw as its hypocrisies and abuses. "Creating the fantasy of Jesus (Joshua Davidson) returning to Victorian England, she argued that he would be a communist who would advocate the sharing of wealth and the end of class inequalities. The novel ends with Joshua Davidson kicked to death by the leaders of the Church of England. An immediate best-seller, Joshua Davidson was Linton's most widely sold book."- Oxford DNB.
