Book excerpt: Leading researchers address conceptual and technical issues in schizophrenia and suggest novel strategies for advancing research and treatment. Despite major advances in methodology and thousands of published studies every year, treatment outcomes in schizophrenia have not improved over the last fifty years. Moreover, we still lack strategies for prevention and we do not yet understand how the interaction of genetic, developmental, and environmental factors contribute to the disorder. In this book, leading researchers consider conceptual and technical obstacles to progress in understanding schizophrenia and suggest novel strategies for advancing research and treatment. The contributors address a wide range of critical issues: the construct of schizophrenia itself; etiology, risk, prediction, and prevention; different methods of modeling the disorder; and treatment development and delivery. They identify crucial gaps in our knowledge and offer creative but feasible suggestions. These strategies include viewing schizophrenia as a heterogeneous group of conditions; adopting specific new approaches to prediction and early intervention; developing better integration of data across genetics, imaging, perception, cognition, phenomenology, and other fields; and moving toward an evidence-based, personalized approach to treatment requiring rational clinical decision-making to reduce functional disability. Book Cognitive Therapy for Delusions Voices and Paranoia

Download or read book Cognitive Therapy for Delusions Voices and Paranoia written by Paul Chadwick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and nurses are increasingly involved in treatments which include psychological therapy, and particularly cognitive therapy, for serious mental disorders. The aim of this book is to guide such professionals towards better practice by treating the individual symptoms of delusions, voices and paranoia, rather than by the categorisation of schizophrenia. The authors provide an introduction to their cognitive model and show how therapy depends crucially on the collaborative relationship with the client. While earlier approaches to these distressing symptoms depended on an overall model of schizophrenia which emphasised fundamental discontinuities with normal thought and psychological processes, the authors? approach is supported by substantial research that indicates that delusions, voices and paranoia lie on a continuum of differences in thought and behaviour, and do not arise from fundamentally different psychological processes. This book offers a practical, research-based and essentially hopeful approach to the assessment and treatment of psychotic disorders and also an argument for the development of a person model for treatment, which is based on the person?s enduring psychological vulnerabilities. This book appears in The Wiley Series in Clinical Psychology Series Editor: J. Mark G. Williams University of Wales, Bangor, UK

Book Family Care of Schizophrenia

Download or read book Family Care of Schizophrenia written by Ian R. H. Falloon and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 1987 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ongoing search for causes for schizophrenia, focus on the harmful effects of critical or rejecting family members and deviant communication patterns has obscured the potentially beneficial role of many families in providing support for their schizophrenic relatives. Falloon and his colleagues have developed a model for the broad-based community treatment of schizophrenia and other severe forms of mental illness that taps this underutilized potential. Their exposition of the family care model, coupled with case studies and results from a controlled outcome study, reveal the family to be an important resource in the community management of mental illness.
