Book excerpt: Ellis Cornelia Knight (1757-1837) was an English gentlewoman, traveller, landscape artist and writer of novels, verse, journals and history. She had the acquaintance of many prominent figures in her lifetime from members of the circle of Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds in her girlhood, Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton during her Italian sojourn, and members of the British Royal Family during her service to Queen Charlotte and Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales. She corresponded with or met many other writers including Fanny Burney, Madame de Stael and Lady Charlotte Bury. Her reputation as a learned author and highly respectable character earned her an invitation to join the household of Queen Charlotte in 1805 and in 1812 she became companion to Princess Charlotte, only daughter of the Prince Regent (later George IV), holding this post until the Regent fired her in 1814 for imagined lapses of judgment. At her death she left behind an incomplete autobiography and a journal which were invaluable sources of information on the court history of those days. These were edited and published posthumously in two volumes in 1861. Volume 2 of 2.

On examining them, I found that they consisted of a considerable number of journal-books, the dates of which covered more than half a century, and an unfinished autobiogra phical memoir, written principally on loose sheets of paper. The latter had obviously been commenced at a very late period of life, and had been inter rupted by death. The Journals, however, supplied all that was needed to complete the Memoir to the very end of the writer's life. Indeed, the conv tinuous Memoir had been written from the Diaries. Nearly a fortnight passed after everything appeared to be arranged, and her Royal Highness, seeing the Prince of Orange daily in presence of Miss Knight, often asked him what preparations were making with respect to a house, establish ment, (910. He always answered that nothing had been said to him, appeared to be ignorant, and did not then talk of taking a house himself. While the Prince of Orange was at Oxford, a letter came from one of Princess Charlotte's aunts, who is very intimate with the Regent, to say that she understood he meant, as soon as the Emperor and King of Prussia were gone, to write over for the Oranges and have the marriage celebrated as soon as possible. This alarmed Princess Charlotte, and she said she resolved to enter into a clear ex planation with the young Prince to avoid disputes afterwards.
