Book Autobiography of Amos Kendall Classic Reprint

Download or read book Autobiography of Amos Kendall Classic Reprint written by Amos Kendall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Amos Kendall It is not the object of the present work to expose to public scrutiny his inner private life. Its purpose is simply to set forth the leading facts in his career, to exhibit his intense patriotism, which was indeed his ruling passion, and to make such revelations of his purely personal history as are essential to the completeness and symmetry of the narrative. The means to that end, the ma. Terials for the work, have been almost wholly furnished by his own hand, and this memoir, though edited by another, is, in fact as in name, an autobiography. Book The Life of Andrew Jackson Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Andrew Jackson Classic Reprint written by John Spencer Bassett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Andrew Jackson Other aspirants were Roger B Taney, George Bancroft, and Amos Kendall. The last was given the promise of the papers. He began to write in 1842 when he had lost the auditorship to which his patron appointed him. He was then poor financially and expected large returns from his venture. He began to publish it in parts, announcing that fifteen would complete the enterprise. Jackson placed the en tire collection of papers at his disposal, and two visits to the Hermitage gave fair Opportunity to get all it contained. He carried away to Washington many of the most immr tant papers and had not returned them when Jackson died in 1845. His work was interrupted when seven instalments had appeared, and it was not completed. Jackson was not pleased with the numbers which he saw, but did not withdraw the papers. There was a plan on foot to build a Jackson memorial in Washington, and he desired them to be handed over by Kendall, when he had finished with them, to Frank P. Blair to hold until the memorial was completed when they were to be deposited there. The least valuable of the collection were not taken to Washington by Kendall, and these went to Blair from Jackson himself. Later Kendall turned over a part of those in hand to Blair, but the latter complained that the most valuable were not delivered. Blair also said that Kendall would yet publish a life of Jackson, written to glorify the writer of it; and he intended to charge his sons to write a true biography which would counteract the errors he expected to be in Kendall's. This, so far as the letters show, is all the basis that existed for the assertion that Blair was to write the life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Elder Henry Kendall: With an Introduction The publication of a book of so humble pretensions as this, which lays no claim to elegance of style, or literary finish of any kind, may appear to some an impropriety. But I do not deem it thus, Far from it. These early laborers pursued their calling under great disadvantages, and amid many difficulties. We have entered into their labors, and it is good for us to be reminded by whose toils we enjoy our present goodlv heritage, and to be stimulated by their exam ple to greater self-denial, and more persevering labors, While, therefore these memorials will be specially grateful to those familar with the scenes and events which they commemorate, they will be interesting and profitable to all. Book The Life and Times of T H Gallaudet

Download or read book The Life and Times of T H Gallaudet written by Edna Edith Sayers and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edna Edith Sayers has written the definitive biography of T. H. Gallaudet (1787-1851), celebrated today as the founder of deaf education in America. Sayers traces Gallaudet's work in the fields of deaf education, free common schools, literacy, teacher education and certification, and children's books, while also examining his role in reactionary causes intended to uphold a white, Protestant nation thought to have existed in New England's golden past. Gallaudet's youthful social and political entanglements included involvement with Connecticut's conservative, state-established Congregational Church, the Federalist Party, and the Counter-Enlightenment ideals of Yale (where he was a student). He later embraced anti-immigrant, anti-abolition, and anti-Catholic efforts, and supported the expatriation of free African-Americans to settlements on Africa's west coast. As much a history of the paternalistic, bigoted, and class-conscious roots of a reform movement as a story of one man's life, this landmark work will surprise and enlighten both the hearing and Deaf worlds.

Book American Lion

Download or read book American Lion written by Jon Meacham and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of a larger-than-life president who defied norms, divided a nation, and changed Washington forever Andrew Jackson, his intimate circle of friends, and his tumultuous times are at the heart of this remarkable book about the man who rose from nothing to create the modern presidency. Beloved and hated, venerated and reviled, Andrew Jackson was an orphan who fought his way to the pinnacle of power, bending the nation to his will in the cause of democracy. Jackson’s election in 1828 ushered in a new and lasting era in which the people, not distant elites, were the guiding force in American politics. Democracy made its stand in the Jackson years, and he gave voice to the hopes and the fears of a restless, changing nation facing challenging times at home and threats abroad. To tell the saga of Jackson’s presidency, acclaimed author Jon Meacham goes inside the Jackson White House. Drawing on newly discovered family letters and papers, he details the human drama–the family, the women, and the inner circle of advisers– that shaped Jackson’s private world through years of storm and victory. One of our most significant yet dimly recalled presidents, Jackson was a battle-hardened warrior, the founder of the Democratic Party, and the architect of the presidency as we know it. His story is one of violence, sex, courage, and tragedy. With his powerful persona, his evident bravery, and his mystical connection to the people, Jackson moved the White House from the periphery of government to the center of national action, articulating a vision of change that challenged entrenched interests to heed the popular will– or face his formidable wrath. The greatest of the presidents who have followed Jackson in the White House–from Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt to FDR to Truman–have found inspiration in his example, and virtue in his vision. Jackson was the most contradictory of men. The architect of the removal of Indians from their native lands, he was warmly sentimental and risked everything to give more power to ordinary citizens. He was, in short, a lot like his country: alternately kind and vicious, brilliant and blind; and a man who fought a lifelong war to keep the republic safe–no matter what it took.
