Book excerpt: The Autobiography Of A Slander This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: I was born on the 2nd September, 1886, in a small, dull, country town. When I say the townwas dull, I mean, of course, that the inhabitants were unenterprising, for in itself Muddletonwas a picturesque place, and though it laboured under the usual disadvantage of a dearth ofbachelors and a superfluity of spinsters, it might have been pleasant enough had it not beena favourite resort for my kith and kin.My father has long enjoyed a world-wide notoriety; he is not, however, as a rule named ingood society, though he habitually frequents it; and as I am led to believe that myautobiography will possibly be circulated by Mr. Mudie, and will lie about on drawing-roomtables, I will merely mention that a most representation of my progenitor, under his nom dethéatre, Mephistopheles, may be seen now in London, and I should recommend all whowish to understand his character to go to the Lyceum, though, between ourselves, hestrongly disapproves of the whole performance.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slander The girl leaned forward and knocked on the glass. "I said 'Washington Square, '" she called. The car skidded dangerously on the wet pavement as the taximan twisted in his seat. "Doncha s'pose I know my way around, lady?" he demanded. As if to show his contempt for a person so stupid as not to know that there was more than one way to a destination, he stepped on the accelerator. The machine slued; above her own cry of quick terror Martha heard the crunch of crushing metal. Then, hardly aware of how she got there, she found herself standing on the sidewalk, too frightened and angry to berate the reckless taximan. The drizzle that had been a contributing cause of the accident dripped disconsolately from the boughs of the forlorn trees that bordered this square which was not Washington Square. She felt a great drop strike her neck. Three hundred dollars' worth of evening wrap; one hundred and fifty dollars worth of frock; eighteen dollars' worth of gold slippers would be ruined in two minutes of rain. Book Autobiography of a Slander

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caudatus Anglicus: A Medieval Slander The renowned Coke upon Littleton quotes approvingly the brocard that antiquity did nothing without sound reason. It is a proposition no truer than a great many other utterances of proverbial wisdom. Our forefathers did and thought a great many very unreasonable things. The popular creed has always been well stocked with such inheritances of ignorance and myth. Sometimes it is possible to trace the origin of superstitions and misconceptions; oftener, hid in the depths of a far off time, they set at naught the most determined efforts of research. But although the quest after a positive solution may fail, there is always a gain to knowledge in the collection and grouping of a mass of facts of which the inner significance is but partially understood. In this spirit I approach the strange mediaeval reproach which so often gratified Frenchmen and Scots desirous of poking ill-natured fun at their common hereditary foe. There can be no doubt whatever that for centuries Englishmen felt it as a very real and aggravating reproach, a sore thorn in the flesh. Its utter and obvious untruth by no means robbed it of its smart. Malice never galls more deeply than when its shafts are barbed with ridicule. The very absurdity of the thing makes it impossible to argue it away, but the irritation it excites is not a whit less keen on that account.
