UNIVERSALITY OF SOUL PRESENCE. Disembodied Beings Never Sleep -- They Witness Crime and Often Give Mortals Warning of Impending Danger The habitat of Incarnated Man--its continents and seas, its cities, its highways and byways--abounds with Disembodied Souls by whom all happenings in their chance vicinage are noted. Earthly evil doers are known. The cerebral crime-spawn of such while incubating is pervious to eyes that never sleep. There is no incertitude in their observations. The blow and the hand that delivers it are seen, and the intent even foreseen. The perpetrator, as he sheathes his knife and steals stealthily away to cover, fancies no one beheld his infamous act and feels therefore that he is secure. Far from it. They of the Palingenesis are alert and will enter the psychic sanctuary of the mystified sleuths of the law and by mode transpicuous to no mortal, awaken right suspicion, and the guilty, tracked to his hiding, shall pay penalty for his misdoing. O wretch with evil in thy heart, beware! Among the Immortals feud is not, machinations are not, nor are there manifestations of dark passions as in the finite world save in exceptional instances. Disembodied Souls rarely bring their rancor and dislikes this side of the Great Divide. A desire to redress wrongs endured in the terrene life is considered impious because usurping a prerogative of God. Says the August Judge, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay!" Even comminations are regarded as unbecoming and lowering to the exalted dignity of the Higher Life. And let the acclaim be trumpeted for the behoof of heedless Mortals, and foolish because heedless, that premonition of approaching disaster to them, nay, of Death itself, perchance, evolves from the Immortals and...

Book excerpt: Biblical scholars have long claimed that the Israelites "could not conceive of a disembodied nefesh [soul]." In this book, Richard C. Steiner rejects that claim based on a broad spectrum of textual, linguistic, archaeological, and anthropological evidence spanning the millennia from prehistoric times to the present. The biblical evidence includes a prophecy of Ezekiel condemning women who pretend to trap the wandering souls of sleeping people--a prophecy that has been only partially understood until now because of the obscure technical terms that it contains. The extrabiblical evidence suggests that a belief in the existence of disembodied souls was part of the common religious heritage of the peoples of the ancient Near East.

Book Where Did I Come From Where Am I Going

Download or read book Where Did I Come From Where Am I Going written by Gabriele and published by Gabriele Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conveys knowledge about very basic spiritual correlations. It contains incisive questions and answers to the topic of “life after death.” For example: How does death take place? What does the soul experience, once it leaves its body? What does karma and reincarnation mean? What help can be given to a person who is dying? Is death already programmed with birth? What is the purpose of our life on the Earth? Excerpt from the book: Most people fear this transition, that is, they are afraid of dying. What can one do about this? The process of dying is similar to that of birth. To be born into a material life is a very natural event. The soul changes spheres. To die is to be born into the spiritual worlds. While on earth as a human being, the very best preparation for our transition into the fine-material form of existence is to align with the light-filled spiritual spheres. This happens by constantly turning to the Spirit within, to God, our Father, and by living a life according to His laws.

Book excerpt: While most people throughout history have believed that we are both physical and spiritual beings, the rise of science has called into question the existence of the soul. Many now argue that neurophysiology demonstrates the radical dependence, indeed, identity, between mind and brain. Advances in genetics and in mapping human DNA, some say, show there is no need for the hypothesis of body-soul dualism. Even many Christian intellectuals have come to view the soul as a false Greek concept that is outdated and unbiblical. Concurrent with the demise of dualism has been the rise of advanced medical technologies that have brought to the fore difficult issues at both edges of life. Central to questions about abortion, fetal research, reproductive techologies, cloning and euthanasia is our understanding of the nature of human personhood, the reality of life after death and the value of ethical or religious knowledge as compared to scientific knowledge. In this careful treatment, J. P. Moreland and Scott B. Rae argue that the rise of these problems alongside the demise of Christian dualism is no coincidence. They therefore employ a theological realism to meet these pressing issues, and to present a reasonable and biblical depiction of human nature as it impinges upon critical ethical concerns. This vigorous philosophical and ethical defense of human nature as body and soul, regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees, will be for all a touchstone for debate and discussion for years to come.

Book Story of a Soul

Download or read book Story of a Soul written by Thérèse of Lisieux and published by Tebbo. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was recommended 'Story of a Soul' as the favorite book of a woman I much admired, who worked at a Carmelite monastery. Initially I wondered about the recommendation when I began the book. Therese of Lisieux lived a sheltered life. Her parents were financially secure and devoutly religious (they had to be encouraged by a priest to marry rather than to join a religious order, and later to consummate their marriage). Therese knew she wanted to be a nun from an extremely early age. My first impression was to wonder why was this book recommended to me, when she has nothing in common with my life, at a time when I didn't known how I would pay the bills and was not sure what God wanted form me in terms of a vocation. True, her health was poor and she suffered the loss of her mother early in her life, so her life was not without sorrow. But she also seemed to have security, love, and an incredible sense of direction, which made me question what I could learn from her life, when these qualities were so missing in my own. Furthermore, I questioned whether some one who lived so holy a life, could be a realistic role model for me; as I have made some pretty unholy decisions in my past. The book quickly grew on me and eradicated my concerns about it being an inaccessible guide for spirituality. The beauty of the writing is her approach to spirituality, which is accessible to any one in any walk of life. She describes souls as similar to different types of flowers. Some are roses, others lilies, and some like orchids, for example. And all can be equally pleasing to God in their own way, when seeking his role for them. People have different talents and different struggles, but these characteristics do not mean that any type is more valued than the other. She writes that if the Christian Church is one body, than she wants to be the heart that loves, which I thought was a beautiful sentiment and a much needed philosophy in the world today. When I look on mistakes I've made in my own life, I realized that it is easiest to succumb to temptation when one feels alone and unloved, and I believe that people would make less such mistakes if they had the support of God's love through others. She writes frequently of the many ways that God is love. She believed that heaven for her would be to be able to help people on earth after she died. Many remarkable stories have been published in books about people who claim to have been helped when having asked Therese to pray for their needs. She is one of the most common saints that people claim to have seen an apparition of during their times of trouble. She writes that any sacrifice in daily life can be offered to God, for the conversion of souls, or help of others, whether it is the suffering of an illness or loss, or the performance of a mundane daily chore. This is a practice also advocated by saints like Gertrude of Helfta, Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, and Francis of Assisi, but it is a way of holy living that any one can practice, in any station of life, at any level of health. Therese also writes much about the prayer, and how her preferred method of praying rather than to memorize long formal prayers, is to speak directly to God as a child, or her struggles and requests. The book is easy to read and intimate. One feels as if one is experiencing a conversation from Therese, while reading it. Excerpts beg to be read over and over again, and each reading makes me appreciate them more, and want to love others more. The only book that has made me fuller of love for God and others (outside of the Bible) is Catherine of Siena's 'The Dialogues.' Therese of Lisieux well earned her title as Doctor of the Church.

Book On the Resurrection of the Dead

Download or read book On the Resurrection of the Dead written by James T. Turner, Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian tradition has largely held three theological affirmations on the resurrection of the physical body. Firstly, that bodily resurrection is not a superfluous hope of afterlife. Secondly, there is immediate post-mortem existence in Paradise. Finally, there is numerical identity between pre-mortem and post-resurrection human beings. The same tradition also largely adheres to a robust doctrine of The Intermediate State, a paradisiacal disembodied state of existence following the biological death of a human being. This book argues that these positions are in fact internally inconsistent, and so a new theological model for life after death is required. The opening arguments of the book aim to show that The Intermediate State actually undermines the necessity of bodily resurrection. Additionally, substance dualism, a principle The Intermediate State requires, is shown to be equally untenable in this context. In response to this, the metaphysics of the afterlife in Christian theology is re-evaluated, and after investigating physicalist and constitutionist replacements for substance dualist metaphysics, a new theory called "Eschatological Presentism" is put forward. This model combines a broadly Thomistic hylemorphic metaphysics with a novel theory of Time. This is an innovative examination of the doctrine of life after death. It will, therefore, be of great interest to scholars of analytic theology and philosophy of religion.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Autobiography

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Autobiography written by Maria DiBattista and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Companion to Autobiography offers a historical overview of the genre from the foundational works of Augustine, Montaigne, and Rousseau through the great autobiographies of the Romantic, Victorian, and modern eras. Sixteen essays from distinguished scholars and critics explore the diverse forms, audiences, styles, and motives of life writings traditionally classified under the rubric of autobiography. Chapters are arranged in chronological order and are grouped to reflect changing views of the psychological status, representative character, and moral authority of the autobiographical text. The volume closes with a group portrait of late-modernist and contemporary autobiographies that, by blurring the dividing line between fiction and non-fiction, expand our understanding of the genre. Accessibly written and comprehensive in scope, the volume will appeal especially to students and teachers of non-fiction narrative, creative writing, and literature more broadly.
