All the incroyables who had thought it a service to check, pistol in hand, the circulation of dispatches and the collection of the imposts, withdrew now to their fire-sides, and those who had profited by their exertions, or wished for other reasons to be forgotten, betook themselves to a distance from the scene of their exploits.
