Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1944 sixteen black enlisted men gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois to begin a cram course that would turn them into the U.S. Navy's first African-American officers on active duty. The men believed they could set back the course of racial justice if they failed and banded together so all would succeed. Despite the demanding pace, all sixteen passed the course. Twelve were commissioned as ensigns and a thirteenth was made a warrant officer. Years later these pioneers came to be known as the Golden Thirteen, but at the outset they were treated more as pariahs than pioneers. Often denied the privileges and respect routinely accorded white naval officers, they were given menial assignments unworthy of their abilities and training. Yet despite this discrimination, these inspirational young men broke new ground and opened the door for generations to come. In 1986, oral historian Paul Stillwell began recording the memories of the eight surviving members of the Golden Thirteen. Later he interviewed three white officers who served with and supported the efforts of the men during World War II. This book collects the stories of those eleven men. Introduced by Colin L. Powell, they tell in dramatic fashion what it was like to be a black American.

Book Fond Recollections

Download or read book Fond Recollections written by Dale Sheets and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autobiography of Dale T. Sheets covers his life from 1920 to 2003. Tom Brokaw calls that "the greatest generation" in American history, citing unbelievable technological advances-from horses pulling plows on Mr. Sheets' family farm to astronauts plowing the outer fields of space. This book is a dramatic life story, which the author likens to a three-act play. While the scenes and the cast keep changing in step with the various stages of his life, the writer continues to view his world with a mixture of horse sense, good humor, and wit. The author grew up roaming the woods of an Indiana farm, graduated from college, survived World War II naval battles, and returned to devote the rest of his life to public education-first as an English teacher and later as a school administrator. After retiring he traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In recognition of his service to public education, he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert Orr in 1983.

Book Recollections of a Common Man

Download or read book Recollections of a Common Man written by Duard Vinson Gillum and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. V. Gillum had a fascinating story of his life that he wanted to record as a part of his family ́s genealogy to pass along to future descendants. As a child growing up in a coal-mining region of Kentucky during the Great Depression of the late 1920 ́s to the mid 1930 ́s, he experienced poverty and hardships that few people of later generations could even imagine. As teenager during WW II, he joined the Navy and served as Quartermaster aboard the USS LSM 36. He participated in invasions of Japanese held islands in the Pacific, witnessing the danger and terror of the Japanese Kamikaze suicide planes. Like millions of other young Americans, he returned home to an America where very few job were available. Armed with only a 9th grade education, he later became a department executive for Rockwell, and worked on the Apollo Moon Landing Project, and later the Space Shuttle Project. Through his hobbies, he coached Little League Baseball and became a mentor to many young children. He is also a gifted poet. His life ́s story is so typical of average Americans whom, in their own way, large or small, contributed to making America the great nation that it is today. The citizens of this country who suffered through the Great Depression, followed by WW II, have been described by many as "America ́s Greatest Generation." D. V. Gillum certainly qualifies as a member of this elite group. T. D. Burns

Book Air Force Cop An Autobiography

Download or read book Air Force Cop An Autobiography written by Kelly D. Harrison and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Force Cop An Autobiography By: Kelly D. Harrison The enforcement of law in the US Armed Forces is covered by the Uniform Code of Military Justice and, when applicable, Title 18 of the US Code. There are other regulations and directives that can result in punitive action. The US Armed Forces is a US taxpayer funded enterprise with the US Army and US Navy almost as old as the nation itself. Crimes against property in the armed forces are not like that of breaking into a privately owned jewelry store in New York City, since all property “owned” by the military branches is property of the US Government. Military members and others who damage, destroy or steal property of the US Government and fellow military members are dealt with harshly. This includes those military members and civilians who commit murder, rape, acts of serious bodily injury and other “index crimes” such as auto theft, arson, kidnapping, etc., within the jurisdiction of the federal government. The US Armed Forces have several consolidated confinement facilities and the US Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Each military branch has their own police and investigative agencies for dealing with crimes against property and people. In the US Air Force, there are the Security Forces (previously known as Air Police and Security Police) for protection of base resources, traffic control enforcement and investigation of misdemeanor offenses. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) is a cadre of enlisted, officer and civilian special agents (all with Federal Law Enforcement Officer status) who are highly trained in specialties such as forensics, fraud, counter-intelligence, polygraph, computer crimes, electronic technical support (hidden cameras, electronic sweeping for covert recording devices, etc.) and general crimes such as arson, homicides, child abuse along with every other imaginable offense against property and people.
