Download or read book Political Autobiographies and Memoirs in Antiquity written by Gabriele Marasco and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient autobiography has been the object of several studies and meetings. However, these have focused chiefly on the philosophical and literary aspects. This book aims to examine the development of political autobiography and memoirs in the Greek and Roman world, stressing, instead, the relation of a single work with the traditions of the genre and also the influence of the respective aims of the authors on the composition of autobiographies. At times these works were written as a means of propaganda in a political struggle, or to defend a past action, and often to furnish material to historians. Nonetheless, they still preserve the personal viewpoint and voice of the protagonists in all their vividness, even if distorted by the aim of defending their record. Political Autobiographies and Memoirs in Antiquity will be a highly valuable and useful reference tool for both scholars and students of Greek and Roman history and literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kniha Inscribing Difference and Resistance: Indigenous Women’s Personal Non-fiction and Life Writing in Australia and North America zkoumá, jak literárně-esejistická tvorba domorodých obyvatelek v USA, Kanadě a Austrálii, publikovaná v 90. letech 20. století, přispěla k formování teoretických východisek tzv. Indigenous feminism (indigenní či domorodý feminismus) a zároveň přispěla k přepsání dominantní historiografie v kontextu těchto osadnických kolonií. Rozbor textů Paully Gunn Allen a Anny Lee Walters z USA, Lee Maracle a Shirley Sterling z Kanady a Jackie Huggins a Doris Pilkington Garimara z Austrálie ukazuje, jak tyto autorky využívají hybridní, multi-žánrový styl, kombinující literární kritiku, historiografii, auto/biografické psaní a fikčně laděné příběhy, k literárnímu vyjádření své odlišné kulturní identity, transgeneračního traumatu z kolonizace a resistence vůči násilné asimilaci.

Download or read book Realit tskonstruktionen in der zeitgen ssischen Kultur written by Susanne Knaller and published by Böhlau Verlag Wien. This book was released on 2008 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Und Immer Z gelloser Wird Die Lust written by Beth V. Linklater and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to expectations, sexual constructions in East German literatures are challenging and diverse. They contribute to, and take issue with, developments in aesthetic form and content, enriching and democratising GDR culture. This book provides a thorough survey of East German art from this new perspective, concentrating specifically upon the iconoclastic work of Irmtraud Morgner and Gabriele Stötzer-Kachold. Both authors use the theme of the erotic not simply in order to break taboos, but - and more importantly - to introduce ideas of utopia, identity and feminism into their art.

Download or read book Hannibal written by Eve MacDonald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of the great Carthaginian general who marched into Rome during the Second Punic War is reexamined in this revealing and scholarly biography. Once of the greatest military minds of the Ancient World, Hannibal Barca lived a life of daring and survival, massive battles, and ultimate defeat. A citizen of Carthage and military commander in Punic Spain, he famously marched his war elephants and huge army over the Alps into Rome’s own heartland to fight the Second Punic War. Yet the Romans were the ultimate victors. They eventually captured and destroyed Carthage, and thus it was they who wrote the legend of Hannibal: a brilliant and worthy enemy whose defeat represented military glory for Rome. In this groundbreaking biography, Eve MacDonald employs archaeological findings and documentary sources to expand the memory of Hannibal beyond his military career. Considering him in the context of his time and the Carthaginian culture that shaped him, MacDonald offers a complex portrait of a man from a prominent family who was both a military hero and a statesman. MacDonald also analyzes Hannibal’s legend over the millennia, exploring how statuary, Jacobean tragedy, opera, nineteenth-century fiction, and other depictions illuminate the character of one of the most fascinating figures in all of history.
Download or read book Discourses on Nations and Identities written by Daniel Syrovy and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. In addition to these chapters, the volume also collects a number of thematically related group sections from the ICLA congress, preserving their original context.
Download or read book A Companion to Marcus Aurelius written by Marcel van Ackeren and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A COMPANION TO MARCUS AURELIUS Considered the last of the “Five Good Emperors,” Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from ad 161 until his death in 180 – yet his influence on philosophy continues to resonate in the modern age through his Meditations. A Companion to Marcus Aurelius presents the first comprehensive collection of essays to explore all essential facets relating to contemporary Marcus Aurelius studies. Featuring contributions from top international scholars in relevant fields, initial readings provide an overview of source material by addressing such topics as manuscript transmission, historical written sources, archaeological evidence, artifacts, and coins. Readings continue with state-of-the-art discussions of various aspects of Marcus Aurelius – his personal biography; political, cultural, and intellectual background; and aspects of his role as emperor, reformer of administration, military leader, and lawgiver. His Meditations are analyzed in detail, including the form of the book, his way of writing, and the various aspects of his philosophy. The final series of readings addresses evolving aspects of his reception. A Companion to Marcus Aurelius offers important new insights on a figure of late antiquity whose unique voice has withstood the centuries to influence contemporary life.

This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular presentations of history have recently been discovered as a new field of research, and even though interest in it has been growing noticeably very little has been published on this topic. This volume is one of the first to open up this new area of historical research, introducing some of the work that has emerged in Germany over the past few years. While mainly focusing on Germany (though not exclusively), the authors analyze different forms of popular historiographies and popular presentations of history since 1800 and the interrelation between popular and academic historiography, exploring in particular popular histories in different media and popular historiography as part of memory culture.

Book excerpt: Of the countless stories of resistance, ingenuity, and personal risk to emerge in the years following the Holocaust, among the most remarkable, yet largely overlooked, are those of the hundreds of Jewish deportees who escaped from moving trains bound for the extermination camps. In France, Belgium, and the Netherlands alone over 750 men, women and children undertook such dramatic escape attempts, despite the extraordinary uncertainty and physical danger they often faced. Drawing upon extensive interviews and a wealth of new historical evidence, Escapees gives a fascinating collective account of this hitherto neglected form of resistance to Nazi persecution.
