Book excerpt: Ce mémoire présente des techniques tout-optiques visant à préserver les paramètres physiques d’un signal télécom au cours de sa propagation dans une fibre optique de plusieurs kilomètres, tels que son état de polarisation, son profil d’intensité et son spectre. Il se compose en deux majeures parties.La première présente tout d’abord l’attraction de polarisation, ayant lieu au cours de l’interaction entre deux faisceaux contrapropagatifs, et qui permet d’imposer un état fixe de polarisation au signal à la sortie de la fibre indépendamment de son état initial. Des applications tout-optiques basées sur l’Omnipolariseur, un dispositif mis au point à Dijon et permettant le contrôle de ce phénomène non linéaire, sont ensuite développées. Elles fonctionnalisent l’état de polarisation d’un signal OOK-RZ à 10 Gbit/s pour mettre au point une mémoire optique à bascule, un routeur, un brouilleur chaotique, et une technique de copie/dissimulation de paquets de données dans une fibre spun de 5 km.La deuxième réalise la première démonstration expérimentale des parois de domaines de polarisation qui annulent les effets dégradant les profils d’intensité et spectral d’un signal codé au cours de sa propagation. Ce phénomène provient du couplage non-linéaire entre les deux modes de polarisation orthogonaux d’une lumière qui se propage dans un milieu Kerr en régime normal de dispersion, et provoque une modulation en opposition de phase des deux modes le long de la fibre. Il est possible de verrouiller deux trains d’impulsions optiques d’intensité complémentaire de sorte à ce que les impulsions ne subissent plus les effets de distorsion intervenant au sein de la fibre afin de conserver l’information à transmettre. Ainsi une propagation sans distorsion a pu être réalisée sur 50 km.

Basé sur l’interaction non linéaire entre deux ondes contrapropagatives au sein d’une fibre optique, ce dispositif permet de contrôler l’état de polarisation de la lumière sans pertes dépendantes de la polarisation.Il est tout d’abord effectué une étude approfondie des propriétés de l’attracteur de polarisation qui conduit au contrôle et à la stabilisation de l’état de polarisation d’un flux de données optiques aux formats NRZ et RZ cadencé à 10 Gb/s dans des fibres de plusieurs kilomètres. Par la suite, cette fonction de régénération tout-optique est associée à d’autres fonctions de régénération telles que l’amplification Raman et le régénérateur de Mamyshev dans le but de régénérer des flux de données optiques à des débits supérieurs à 10 Gb/s.Enfin, une extension de l’attracteur de polarisation, appelé Omnipolariseur, est étudiée où la lumière interagit avec elle-même grâce à un dispositif de réflexion inséré à l’autre extrémité de la fibre optique. La lumière est alors capable d’auto-organiser son état de polarisation, ce qui démontre la capacité de l’Omnipolariseur par exemple à stabiliser l’état de polarisation d’un flux de données optiques RZ à 40 Gb/s à 1550 nm

Pendant longtemps celle-ci a été cantonnée dans l'étude des matériaux cristallins et rares qui en étaient les applications. Mais l'étroitesse des faisceaux lasers permet maintenant l'utilisation de matériaux biréfringents de petite taille et ceux-ci peuvent en retour modifier les caractéristiques de l'onde optique laser (amplitude, direction de polarisation, etc.). Les nouveaux outils mathématiques issus de la mise en forme des théories quantiques ont en outre servi à décrire les divers phénomènes de polarisation de la lumière. Ils ont conduit à une présentation élégante et la mise en place de méthodes, de calcul très efficaces. De plus, le lien avec la théorie géométrique de la lumière de Poincaré a été établi, permettant ainsi une approche géométrique et une représentation abstraite complémentaire. Dans ce contexte, l'objectif de cet ouvrage est d'offrir une vision globale des phénomènes de polarisation et de fournir les outils d'étude les mieux adaptés. Il explicite les différentes représentations et la propagation des états dans un milieu biréfringent quelconque, en en comparant les avantages et les inconvénients. Puis, l'auteur analyse la propagation de la lumière dans les milieux biréfringents linéaires et/ou circulaires en mettant en place des méthodes de résolution issues du calcul des perturbations. Il traite de l'important sujet des biréfringences provoquées, qui sont à la base d'un nombre croissant de composants optoélectroniques agissant sur les ondes optiques. Les composants polarisants sont présentés, non sous la forme d'un catalogue, mais par fonctions spécifiques, utilisations particulières et performances. A cette occasion, les effets interférométriques dus à des ondes polarisées sont analysés. Les ondes guidées, tant sur une structure planaire que sur des fibres optiques, sont de plus en plus utilisées. Jusqu'à présent, aucune présentation synthétique des effets de leur polarisation n'avait été faite. Cet ouvrage essaie aussi d'en dégager les phénomènes essentiels. Il constitue une source de référence pour tous les utilisateurs, étudiants, universitaires, chercheurs qui souhaiteraient connaître et mieux utiliser les phénomènes de polarisation.

His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
