Book Autism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Valsamma Eapen
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2011-08-17
  • ISBN : 9533074930
  • Pages : 502 pages

Download or read book Autism written by Valsamma Eapen and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers some of the key research developments in autism and brings together the current state of evidence on the neurobiologic understanding of this intriguing disorder. The pathogenetic mechanisms are explored by contributors from diverse perspectives including genetics, neuroimaging, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuroimmunology, neuroendocrinology, functional organization of the brain and clinical applications from the role of diet to vaccines. It is hoped that understanding these interconnected neurobiological systems, the programming of which is genetically modulated during neurodevelopment and mediated through a range of neuropeptides and interacting neurotransmitter systems, would no doubt assist in developing interventions that accommodate the way the brains of individuals with autism function. In keeping with the multimodal and diverse origins of the disorder, a wide range of topics is covered and these include genetic underpinnings and environmental modulation leading to epigenetic changes in the aetiology; neural substrates, potential biomarkers and endophenotypes that underlie clinical characteristics; as well as neurochemical pathways and pathophysiological mechanisms that pave the way for therapeutic interventions.

He single-handedly realigned the field from a psychodynamic, parent-blaming perspective to a scientific, physiological course of action. Martha Herbert and Simon Baron-Cohen, who celebrate Dr. Rimland's exceptional work, and place his findings within the context of autism as we understand it today. Book Language Development and Social Interaction in Blind Children

Download or read book Language Development and Social Interaction in Blind Children written by Miguel Perez-Pereira and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date account of blind children's developing communicative abilities with particular emphasis on social cognition and language acquisition from infancy to early school age. It purports to foster dialogue between those interested in the study of typically developing children and those interested in the development of children who are blind and to provide insights and new explanations of why the development of blind children may differ from that of sighted children. The book also aims to identify and examine current theoretical issues which are likely to be at the centre of developments in the fields of child language and developmental psychology. Language Development and Social Interaction in Blind Children is also a timely book. The study of blind children's development constitutes a unique opportunity to study the effect of vision on development, and more specifically on the development of language and certain aspects of social cognition. Current interest in the development of "theory of mind" and perspective taking in language learning, make the case of blind children crucial to our understanding of certain aspects of psychological functioning. The book explores these issues, challenges some widely-held beliefs about the development of communication in blind children, and provides a cohesive picture of our knowledge to date.

Book Closing the Educational Achievement Gap for Students With Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Closing the Educational Achievement Gap for Students With Learning Disabilities written by Nyemba, Florence and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a growing demand for diversity and inclusion in schools worldwide to ensure effective learning for every student. Efforts have been made to support teachers in promoting diversity in classrooms, but research shows that students with learning disabilities (LD), including autism spectrum disorder, neurodevelopmental disabilities, dyslexia, and executive dysfunction, still struggle to keep up despite having individualized education programs (IEPs). These students are not receiving the necessary support they need to learn effectively in the classroom, leaving them behind and often completely unprepared for their futures. When intersectional statistics are taken into account, students who have a learning disability and are among minority ethnic groups have even lower rates of earning a diploma than their counterparts. Changes in the educational system must be made to close this learning chasm and create a more equitable learning environment. Closing the Educational Achievement Gap for Students With Learning Disabilities increases awareness of the issue of inequalities in education for students with learning disabilities through improved training programs for teachers, recommendations for policy changes, and development of new strategies to close the gap between these students and their classmates. The goal of this book is to educate and empower educators, researchers, and policymakers on how they can help students with learning disabilities thrive academically and emotionally. It examines the barriers that prevent teachers from effectively providing instruction to these students. This book covers topics such as achievement gaps, student-centered approaches, and culturally responsive teaching and is ideal for educators, professionals, researchers, special education professionals, speech and occupational therapists, disability service providers, intervention strategists, psychologists, parents, and local communities.

Book excerpt: The proposal for multiprofessional work in mental health brings a special form of organization with the joint contribution of health professionals that can work as a team in assisting people with psychological disorders. It aims to provide the most appropriate and complete assistance to users with mental disorders regardless of the degree of morbidity. In this sense, the determination of the National Health Council of Brazil is to recognize as regulated health professionals the following regulated professional categories: Social Workers; Biologists; Biomedical; Dental Surgeons; Physical Education; Nurses; Pharmacists; Physiotherapists; Speech therapists; Doctors; Veterinary Physicians; Nutritionists; Psychologists; and Occupational Therapists. They contributed decisively working together, allowing professionals to act in health actions nationwide, leaving the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde- SUS) the legitimacy attributed by the Magna Charta Libertatum of Brazil, to proceed with the norms for training the professionals that make up the sector’s of Health “The Unified Health System is responsible, under the terms of the law: to order the training of human resources in the area of health”. Through this legal framework, integrative health policies provided conditions for establishing the various transformations in the socio-political-cultural scenarios, reflecting on the epidemiological contour of society, leading to an increase changes in health models and contributing decisively to the conversions of care práxis, incorporating the multiprofessionality with agents with medium technical training through the Community Health Agent, Nursing Technician and Oral Health Technician. The establishment of knowledge and practices that provide the integration of the common field of activity of the multiprofessional teams, in the various performance scenarios, conducts the various actions which include the Family Health Support Center, Health at School Program, Health Academy, culminating in Psychosocial Care Centers I, II and III. They are specialized compositions in the approach to mental health for the treatment and social reintegration of SUS with mental disorders of different magnitudes users.
