Book The Unspoken Truth about Autism

Download or read book The Unspoken Truth about Autism written by Karen Savlov and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystery and controversy surround the etiology and clinical work with children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although many consider the etiology to be unknown, the majority of professionals working in the field of autism and parents of children with autism consider autism to be a brain disorder. As such, most research has emphasized the study of the brain. From this perspective, the clinical work with this population focuses primarily on techniques such as Applied Behavioral Analysis, sensory integration, modeling, and social skills development. The work done thus far with this population should be commended and not discounted. We are now ready to augment the present state-of-the-art work with this population by introducing Attachment Relational Therapy (ART). This therapy is similar to DIR(r)/Floortime(tm) and other relationally based therapies in that it emphasizes the relationship between the child and the therapist or caregiver. The major difference is that Attachment Relational Therapy introduces a treatment process (plan) that at its core is based on understanding the etiology of autism. It is author Karen Savlov's belief that the cause of autism is due to an incomplete attachment, which occurs within the first two to three years of life. Once the etiology is understood through this new lens, then the therapist or parent can understand how to engage with the child. From this alternative perspective, it is Savlov's belief that children on the spectrum have not had the advantage of a completed attachment. She calls this perspective Incomplete Attachment, and it is her belief that what one sees when observing children on the spectrum is a child who is waiting for the attachment process to be completed. The child is doing the best he/she can to cope with this predicament. All the behaviors such as flapping arms, nonverbal communication, echolalia, lack of responsiveness to others or inability to communicate one's needs, can all make sense when taken from this perspective. The author suggests that at the core of autism is the child's inability to use herself in relationship to others. This lack of a sense of self-agency evolves during the attachment phase of development and Savlov hypothesizes that the child is left in a waiting position and remains in this incomplete state of attachment until the caregiver and/or therapist understands this predicament and can respond appropriately. Within these pages, she hopes to illustrate how the child with autism can be mobilized to utilize herself through the use of understanding (empathy), acceptance, recognition, and validation. The writings contained in this volume will go into detail about this viewpoint and how one works with children, adolescents, and adults from this perspective. It is Savlov's belief that Autism Spectrum Disorders can also inform our understanding of psychological development in general and specifically Theory of Mind. Autism Spectrum Disorders can be viewed as a window into the understanding of how all typical individuals develop psychologically. Presenting a cutting-edge view of autism, its genesis, and potentially new treatment methodologies with demonstrable clinical success, The Unspoken Truth About Autism: A New Look at the Etiology and Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders is a fundamental reorientation of not only the view of autism and its origins but of human psychological development as a whole.

Book Constructing Autism

Download or read book Constructing Autism written by Majia Holmer Nadesan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is now considered to be one of the most common developmental disorders today, yet 100 years ago the term did not exist. This book examines the historical and social events that enabled autism to be identified as a distinct disorder in the early twentieth century. The author, herself the mother of an autistic child, argues that although there is without doubt a biogenetic component to the condition, it is the social factors involved in its identification, interpretation and remediation that determine what it means to be autistic. Constructing Autism explores the social practices and institutions that reflect and shape the way we think about autism and what effects this has on autistic people and their families. Unravelling what appears to be the ‘truth’ about autism, this informative book steps behind the history of its emergence as a modern disorder to see how it has become a crisis of twenty-first century child development.

Book Letters To My Weird Sisters

Download or read book Letters To My Weird Sisters written by Joanne Limburg and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Limburg describes movingly her own struggles as a new mother and the pressure of society's expectations...Through such delicately intertwined experiences, Limburg quietly shouts for change.' Times Literary Supplement It seemed to me that many of the moments when my autism had caused problems, or at least marked me out as different, were those moments when I had come up against some unspoken law about how a girl or a woman should be, and failed to meet it. An autism diagnosis in midlife enabled Joanne Limburg to finally make sense of why her emotional expression, social discomfort and presentation had always marked her as an outsider. Eager to discover other women who had been misunderstood in their time, she writes a series of wide-ranging letters to four 'weird sisters' from history, addressing topics including autistic parenting, social isolation, feminism, the movement for disability rights and the appalling punishments that have been meted out over centuries to those deemed to fall short of the norm. This heartfelt, deeply compassionate and wholly original work humanises women who have so often been dismissed for their differences, and will be celebrated by 'weird sisters' everywhere.

Book Unstrange Minds

Download or read book Unstrange Minds written by Roy Richard Grinker and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A father's inspiring portrait of his daughter informs this classic reassessment of the "epidemic" of autism. When Isabel Grinker was diagnosed with autism in 1994, it occurred in only about 3 of every 10,000 children. Within ten years, rates had skyrocketed. Some scientists reported rates as high as 1 in 150. The media had declared autism an epidemic. Unstrange Minds documents the global quest of Isabel's father, renowned anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker, to discover the surprising truth about why autism is so much more common today. In fact, there is no autism epidemic. Rather, we are experiencing an increase in autism diagnoses, and Grinker shows that the identification and treatment of autism depends on culture just as much as it does on science. Filled with moving stories and informed by the latest science, Unstrange Minds is a powerful testament to a father's search for the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you had that dream, the one where you are standing next to somebody that you care about a great deal. You need to say something important but you can't make a sound? You are not mad or angry in this dream, you love this person. You care about this person. In this dream, you seem to be invisible. That dream scenario helps to explain why I wrote this book. As one who is both a father of an Autistic dude, and one who is also on the Spectrum, I want to share with you a series of world views and perspective from behind the eyes of Autism that are safe and are infused with love, hope and optimism. This book is focused on the humanity of Autism. This book delivers unapologetic and optimistic insight into a mysterious life experience that, in truth, is not at all mysterious. The "Autism Awareness" effort has made great progress over the past 30 years, and that is a very good thing. This recognition begs the question, now what? Over the past three and one-half years, I have conducted more than 6,000 focus groups on the topics that are covered in this book. In that process, I have been able to speak with hundreds of parents of Autistic individuals, along with dozens of psychologists, neurologists, behavior analysts, teachers and other trained specialists. I have spoken to thousands of individuals who know somebody, a friend, or a relative of an individual who is on the Autism Spectrum. I have a background in consumer product development, marketing and sales to the largest retailers in the world. Through my experience, I recognize that an empowering and life affirming message is only as good its ability to instantly connect and resonate with the consumer. With that in mind, I share a simple, core, accurate description of the Autism experience within my book, one that can be embraced and internalized by any reader. We can move beyond a "We/They" conversation about Autism within society. Autism is truly an "Us" conversation, and I cannot wait to share this game-changing information with you.
