Book excerpt: Assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) is essential to provide comprehensive understanding of child functioning, advise diagnosis, and inform treatment. Evidence-based guidelines for ASD diagnosis have been developed; however, results from studies conducted outside Canada suggest disparities between these guidelines and clinical procedures. The objectives of this study were to: (a) understand Canadian clinicians' practices in assessment of ASDs; (b) compare assessment practices to evidence-based guidelines; and (c) identify challenges. Eighty-six Canadian clinicians participated in a survey. Findings suggested a disparity between reported practice and evidence-based guidelines in terms of processes implemented and use of consultation practices. Clinicians indicated that organizing assessment teams and identifying ASDs in high-functioning children are challenges. Overall, this study provides a picture of the current Canadian context for ASD diagnosis. This information may inform the development of additional guidelines and training opportunities, and highlight policy changes required to alleviate challenges in the diagnostic process.

Attention deficithyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been a common psychiatric diagnosis in both children and adults since the 1980s and 1990s in the United States. But the diagnosis was much less common—even unknown—in other parts of the world. By the end of the twentieth century, this was no longer the case, and ADHD diagnosis and treatment became an increasingly widespread global phenomenon. As the diagnosis was adopted around the world, the definition and treatment of ADHD often changed in the context of different psychiatric professions, medical systems, and cultures. Yet, what are children with disabilities’ personal schooling experiences, and how may these insights support inclusive learning, teaching, and sense of belonging? Within Toronto, one of the most diverse Canadian cities, this book explores the stories and experiences of six middle years children with intersecting differences of race, ethnicity, language, and disabilities (particularly autism). Through narrative and critical discourse analysis research methods the children’s views were accessed via a mosaic multi-method data collection approach, including their own photography, drawings, journal writings, imaginative story games, and interview texts. The children’s narratives illustrate their understandings of differences, learning, and inclusion. This book presents innovative insights highlighting the voices of children with disabilities as they navigate through complex issues of diversity and share how these impact their understandings and experiences of school inclusion and exclusion.
