Book excerpt: What is the meaning of life? Where does everything come from? Why is anything? In Authentic Knowing, Imants Baruss shows us how we might transform ourselves so that we can come closer to answering these existential questions. Baruss argues persuasively that our knowledge is limited by the interpretations of experiences provided by the society around us. These include the materialistic explanations belonging to a traditional scientific worldview, which can account for neither the nature of matter nor anomalous phenomena, such as near-death experiences. However, authenticity, the effort to act on the basis of one's own understanding, can form the basis for answers to existential and scientific questions.

Book The Authentic Animal

Download or read book The Authentic Animal written by Dave Madden and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would someone want to create or own the mounted skin of a dead animal? That's the question Dave Madden explores in The Authentic Animal. Madden starts his journey with the life story of Carl Akeley, the father of modern taxidermy. Akeley started small by stuffing a canary, but by the end of his life he had created the astonishing Akeley Hall of African Mammals at The American Museum of Natural History. What Akeley strove for and what fascinates Madden is the attempt by the taxidermist to replicate the authentic animal, looking as though it's still alive. To get a first-hand glimpse at this world, Madden travels to the World Taxidermy Championships, the garage workplaces of people who mount freeze-dried pets for bereaved owners, and the classrooms of a taxidermy academy where students stretch deer pelts over foam bases. On his travels, he looks at the many forms taxidermy takes—hunting trophies, museum dioramas, roadside novelties, pet memorials—and considers what taxidermy has to tell us about human-animal relationships. The Authentic Animal is an entertaining and thought-provoking blend of history, biology, and philosophy that will make readers think twice the next time they scoff at a moose head hung lovingly on a wall.

Book Process and the Authentic Life

Download or read book Process and the Authentic Life written by Jason W. Brown and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis advanced in this book is that feeling and cognition actualize through a process that originates in older brain formations and develops outward through limbic and cortical fields through the self-concept and private space into (as) the world. An iteration of this transition deposits acts, objects, feelings and utterances. Value is a mode of conceptual feeling that depends on the dominant phase in this transition: from desire through interest to object worth. Among the topics covered are subjective time and change, the epochal nature of objects and their temporal extensibility and the evolution of value from inorganic matter into organic form. The theory of microgenesis informs this work. According to this theory, acts and objects evolve in milliseconds through phases that replicate patterns in forebrain evolution. The progression in the actualization of the mind/brain state is from archaic to recent in brain formation, from unity to diversity, from past to present and from mind to world. An account is given of the diversity of felt experience avoiding the reductionist moves characteristic of biological materialism and the inherent dualism of psychoanalytic and related theories. This book is intended for any reader interested in the psychology of the inner life and philosophy of mind, including philosophers, psychologists, psychiatrists and others with an interest in problems of value and moral feeling.
