Book excerpt: Island Songs is a work of sonic anthropology that does more than probe song as a part of the sociocultural life on islands. It illuminates how song performs island life. Gathered here are 15 case study chapters on islands in the Caribbean, North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Baltic, and the South Pacific, all framed by four eclectic, conceptual essay contributions. In Island Songs, islands are presented as distinct vantage points for observing the merger of the local and the global, as poignantly expressed through song. This book brings together the perspectives and experiences of sociologists, anthropologists, geographers, cultural studies specialists, folklorists, ethnomusicologists, singers, and musicians. Island Songs will interest not only ethnomusicologists but any and all scholars interested in the effects of globalization on traditional cultures.

Book Traditional Songs and Music of the Kor Region of Albania

Download or read book Traditional Songs and Music of the Kor Region of Albania written by Eno Koço and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the repertory of traditional urban song and music of the Korçë area in general and more specifically the karakteristike (characteristic) or ‘distinctive’ song associated with Korçë city, Albania. The first half of the 20th century marked the climax of an evolution which started in the mid-19th century with the oral tradition of urban song in Korçë. While the translation of ‘Kënga Karakteristike Korçare’ into ‘Korçare Distinctive Song’ seems to be an odd name for a genre, it is, however, a translation as close as possible to the original Albanian, denoting the characteristic songs of Korçë. The term ‘characteristic’ implies peculiar or specific songs, different not only from the traditional urban song of Korçë, but also from any kind of song, whether folk, popular, traditional urban or art, composed and performed among the Korçë people. The book also introduces the Korçare urban song and urban lyric song, as well as the Saze music, which were introduced during the Ottoman domination of the Balkans.

Book The Sea Captain s Wife A True Story of Love Race and War in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book The Sea Captain s Wife A True Story of Love Race and War in the Nineteenth Century written by Martha Hodes and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finalist for the Lincoln Prize, The Sea Captain's Wife "comes surprisingly, and movingly, alive" (Tina Jordan, Entertainment Weekly). Award-winning historian Martha Hodes brings us into the extraordinary world of Eunice Connolly. Born white and poor in New England, Eunice moved from countryside to factory city, worked in the mills, then followed her husband to the Deep South. When the Civil War came, Eunice's brothers joined the Union army while her husband fought and died for the Confederacy. Back in New England, a widow and the mother of two, Eunice barely got by as a washerwoman, struggling with crushing depression. Four years later, she fell in love with a black sea captain, married him, and moved to his home in the West Indies. Following every lead in a collection of 500 family letters, Hodes traced Eunice's footsteps and met descendants along the way. This story of misfortune and defiance takes up grand themes of American history—opportunity and racism, war and freedom—and illuminates the lives of ordinary people in the past. A Library Journal Best Book of the Year and a selection of the Book of the Month Club, Literary Guild, and Quality Paperback Book Club.

Book Newfoundland Rhapsody

Download or read book Newfoundland Rhapsody written by Glenn David Colton and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Rennie Emerson (1895-1972) was a dynamic presence in the cultural and intellectual life of Newfoundland and Labrador for much of the twentieth century. A musician, lawyer, educator, and folklore enthusiast, Emerson was a central figure in the preservation and mediation of Newfoundland culture in the tumultuous decades prior to and following Confederation with Canada in 1949. Glenn Colton shows how Emerson fostered greater awareness and understanding of Newfoundland's cultural heritage in local, national, and international contexts. His collaboration with song collector Maud Karpeles in the late 1920s preserved some of the most cherished folk songs in the English language, and a decade later, his lectures at Memorial University College emphasized folk traditions and classical repertoire to inspire cultural discovery for an entire generation. As Newfoundland's representative on the first Canada Council and vice-president of the Canadian Folk Music Society, he played a crucial role in shaping Canadian cultural policy during the transformative years of the mid-twentieth century. Colton also reveals the meaningful creative works Emerson composed in response to the same cultural heritage he documented and preserved: his one-act drama Proud Kate Sullivan (1940) is a pioneering depiction of Newfoundland life, and the folk-inspired Newfoundland Rhapsody (1964) is one of few examples of symphonic music composed by a Newfoundlander of his generation. Newfoundland Rhapsody explores Newfoundland society, Canada's emerging arts scene, and the international folk music community to offer a new lens through which to view the cultural history of twentieth-century Newfoundland and Canada.
