Book Authentic Metaphysics in an Age of Unreality Second Edition

Download or read book Authentic Metaphysics in an Age of Unreality Second Edition written by Leo Sweeney and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-03-19 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age where appearances are often substituted for what really is, deception and falsity for honesty and truth, this metaphysics book takes things 'as they actually are' and discovers that reality 'is' actuality (which as subsistent is God), that philosophical knowledge in its content is caused by what is known and is objectively true. It considers goodness and beauty, human existents as individual, relational units (e.g., the family), agents and goals, chance and evil. It is in contrast with Sartrean existentialism, process philosophy, linguistic analysis, phenomenology, hermeneutics, and deconstructionism.

Book Free Will and God s Universal Causality

Download or read book Free Will and God s Universal Causality written by W. Matthews Grant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional doctrine of God's universal causality holds that God directly causes all entities distinct from himself, including all creaturely actions. But can our actions be free in the strong, libertarian sense if they are directly caused by God? W. Matthews Grant argues that free creaturely acts have dual sources, God and the free creaturely agent, and are ultimately up to both in a way that leaves all the standard conditions for libertarian freedom satisfied. Offering a comprehensive alternative to existing approaches for combining theism and libertarian freedom, he proposes new solutions for reconciling libertarian freedom with robust accounts of God's providence, grace, and predestination. He also addresses the problem of moral evil without the commonly employed Free Will Defense. Written for analytic philosophers and theologians, Grant's approach can be characterized as “neo-scholastic” as well as “analytic,” since many of the positions defended are inspired by, consonant with, and develop resources drawn from the scholastic tradition, especially Aquinas.

Book Being and Some Twentieth century Thomists

Download or read book Being and Some Twentieth century Thomists written by John F. X. Knasas and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerfully argued book, Knasas engages a debate at the heart of the revival of Thomistic thought in the twentieth century. Richly detailed and illuminating, his book calls on the tradition established by Gilson, Maritain, and Owen, to build a case for Existential Thomism as a valid metaphysics. Being and Some Twentieth-Century Thomists is a comprehensive discussion of the major issues and controversies in neo-Thomism, including issues of mind, knowledge, the human subject, free will, nature, grace, and the act of being. Knasas also discusses the Transcendental Thomism of Mar chal, Rahner, Lonergan, and others as he builds a carefully articulated case for completing the Thomist revival.

Book Channels of Imperishable Fire

Download or read book Channels of Imperishable Fire written by Clement A. Kuehn and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the poems of Dioscorus of Aphrodito (ca. 520-ca. 585 C.E.) were discovered on papyri in Upper Egypt, they have perplexed and disturbed scholars. Written largely in an Homeric vocabulary, many appear to be praising dukes and other government officials according to encomiastic conventions. Yet the poems do not adhere closely to these conventions and contain many verses and passages which are nearly incomprehensible. This book demonstrates that many of these problematic passages have mystical significance and that the encomia possibly have an allegorical level of meaning. The study also reveals the valuable contribution these poems make to our understanding of early Christian mysticism and Late Antique culture.
