Book Assisting Emigration to Upper Canada

Download or read book Assisting Emigration to Upper Canada written by Wendy Cameron and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a rich collection of contemporary sources, this study focuses on one group of English immigrants sent to Upper Canada from Sussex and other southern counties with the aid of parishes and landlords. In Part One, Wendy Cameron follows the work of the Petworth Emigration Committee over six years and trace how the immigrants were received in each of these years. In Part Two, Mary McDougall Maude presents a complete list of emigrants on Petworth ships from 1832 to 1837, including details of their background, family reconstructions, and additional information drawn from Canadian sources. Paternalism strong enough to slow the wheels of change is embodied here in Thomas Sockett, the organizer of the Petworth emigrations, and his patron, the Earl of Egremont, and in Lieutenant Governor Sir John Colborne in Upper Canada. The friction created as these men sought to sustain older values in the relationship between rich and poor highlights the shift in British emigration policy. In these years of transition immigrants sent by the Petworth Emigration Committee could accept assistance and the government direction that went with it, or they could rely on their own resources and find work for themselves. Once the transition was complete, the market-driven model took over and immigrants had to make their own best bargain for their labour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Days in Upper Canada: Letters of John Langton From the Backwoods of Upper Canada and the Audit Office of the Province of Canada During the first four years after my father came out to Canada he wrote home to his family circle in Eng land a series of letters which form the first part of this collection. These letters were carefully copied by his father, to whom they were chiefly addressed, and were bound in book form. They have thus been preserved in their entirety. The reason for copying them is sug gested by the only surviving original letter. At that time letters were sent without envelopes and, as post age was charged by the sheet and was expensive, long letters, like this which survives, were so diligently crossed in the writing that they were difficult to read or refer to. When my father's family came to Canada to join him this book of copied letters, com prising the letters from 1833 to 1837, was left behind in England with William Langton the elder brother. He copied from the occasional letters my father, con tinned to write to him portions of special interest, such as the extracts about Lumbering and the Clergy Reserves, but preserved the original manuscript of the letters about university affairs and the audit of the public accounts. It was not until more than ten years after my father's death that his letters were brought out from their place of preservation and placed in my hands. Download or read book A Darkened House written by Geoffrey Bilson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1980-12-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its first appearance in 1832 until the last scares of 1871, cholera aroused fear in British North America. The disease killed 20,000 people and its psychological effects were enormous. Cholera unsettled governments, undermined the medical profession, exposed inadequacies in public health, and widened the division between rich and poor. In a fascinating and disturbing book, Geoffrey Bilson traces the story of the cholera epidemics as they ravaged the Canadas and the Atlantic colonies. The political repercussions were extensive, particularly in Lower Canada. Governments, both colonial and municipal, imposed various public health measures, including quarantine. These actions were always temporary and poorly enforced, and they sometimes met with violent opposition, especially among the poor and the immigrants, hit hardest by cholera. Even the panic that ensued from the periodic onslaughts of the disease could not overcome the prevailing laissez-faire attitude towards public health legislation. The medical profession was equally helpless. Doctors could neither cure the disease nor isolate its cause, and public sentiment against them ran high. A Darkened House is important reading for those interested in Canada’s social, political, and medical history.

Book English Immigrant Voices

Download or read book English Immigrant Voices written by Wendy Cameron and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected from published, archival, and private sources, these letters place the Petworth immigrants in the context of their times and challenge the image of English immigrants to 1830s Upper Canada as officers and gentlewomen. Wendy Cameron, Sheila Haines, and Mary McDougall Maude have carefully annotated the letters to sketch the stories of individual writers, link letters by the same author or members of the same family, and explore the connections between writers. What eventually happened to some of the writers is also revealed in this engaging collection. English Immigrant Voices provides a valuable insight into the rural poor and their experiences in emigrating to a new land.
