Book Comparative Thermal Ecology of Copperheads Agkistrodon Contortrix and Cottonmouths Agkistrodon Piscivorus

Download or read book Comparative Thermal Ecology of Copperheads Agkistrodon Contortrix and Cottonmouths Agkistrodon Piscivorus written by Andrew T. Mueller and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body temperature is directly related to the physiology and behavior of ectotherms and the ability to thermoregulate is crucial for the survival and development of the organism. "Agkistrodon contortrix" (copperhead snakes) and "Agkistrodon piscivorus" (cottonmouth snakes) are relatively common, wide-ranging viperids, and their sit-and-wait ambush foraging strategy suggest that they are more likely to be passive thermoconfomers within their thermal environment than active thermoregulators.

Book Northern Copperhead Agkistrodon Contortrix Mokasen Use of Three Habitat Types in Southeastern Kentucky

Download or read book Northern Copperhead Agkistrodon Contortrix Mokasen Use of Three Habitat Types in Southeastern Kentucky written by Clinton R. Hayes and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitat use can be difficult to determine with cryptic species such as the northern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen), and very little information exists concerning the use of edge habitat by this species. The objective of this study was to determine which of three habitat types northern copperheads use the most; edge [powerline right-of-way (ROW)], grassland, or a forested area. Northern copperheads were trapped from June through October 2006, and April through October 2007 on the Daniel Boone National Forest in McCreary and Whitley Counties in southeastern Kentucky. The total number of northern copperheads captured during the study was 45 in ROW sites, 19 in the forest sites, and 17 in the open field sites. Capture numbers varied by month with peak captures in September. The number of male and female captures was similar for each habitat type. The data suggest northern copperheads may be using the ROW as a corridor to move between fragmented woodlots, and for thermoregulation.

Book Habitat Selection and Movement Patterns of Copperheads Agkistrodon Contortrix in Fire altered Landscapes

Download or read book Habitat Selection and Movement Patterns of Copperheads Agkistrodon Contortrix in Fire altered Landscapes written by James P. Flaherty and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire can functionally alter habitat available to wildlife through modification of structural and micro-climatic characteristics. Because of their reliance on behavioral thermoregulation and crypsis, reptiles can be especially susceptible to these post-fire changes in habitat characteristics. The copperhead ("Agkistrodon contortrix") is a widely distributed snake found throughout the southeastern US ... Previous studies suggest that copperheads decrease in abundance after fire events, and in order to investigate the specific drivers influencing these changes in abundance, we radio-tracked 14 adult male copperheads captured in burned and unburned habitats at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, KY.

Book Tracks and Shadows

Download or read book Tracks and Shadows written by Harry W. Greene and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectually rich, intensely personal, and beautifully written, Tracks and Shadows is both an absorbing autobiography of a celebrated field biologist and a celebration of beauty in nature. Harry W. Greene, award-winning author of Snakes: The Evolution of Mystery in Nature, delves into the poetry of field biology, showing how nature eases our existential quandaries. More than a memoir, the book is about the wonder of snakes, the beauty of studying and understanding natural history, and the importance of sharing the love of nature with humanity. Greene begins with his youthful curiosity about the natural world and moves to his stints as a mortician's assistant, ambulance driver, and army medic. In detailing his academic career, he describes how his work led him to believe that nature’s most profound lessons lurk in hard-won details. He discusses the nuts and bolts of field research and teaching, contrasts the emotional impact of hot dry habitats with hot wet ones, imparts the basics of snake biology, and introduces the great explorers Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. He reflects on friendship and happiness, tackles notions like anthropomorphism and wilderness, and argues that organisms remain the core of biology, science plays key roles in conservation, and natural history offers an enlightened form of contentment.
