Download or read book Die Auswanderung Aus Dem Herzogtum Braunschweig Im Kr ftespiel Staatliche Einflussnahme und ffentlicher Resonanz 1720 1897 written by Cornelia Pohlmann and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Liberal Imperialism in Germany

Download or read book Liberal Imperialism in Germany written by Matthew P. Fitzpatrick and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a work based on new archival, press, and literary sources, the author revises the picture of German imperialism as being the brainchild of a Machiavellian Bismarck or the "conservative revolutionaries" of the twentieth century. Instead, Fitzpatrick argues for the liberal origins of German imperialism, by demonstrating the links between nationalism and expansionism in a study that surveys the half century of imperialist agitation and activity leading up to the official founding of Germany's colonial empire in 1884.

Book The Ideological Origins of Nazi Imperialism

Download or read book The Ideological Origins of Nazi Imperialism written by Woodruff D. Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1989-02-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces the evolution of imperialist ideology in Germany from Bismarck in the mid-19th century through Hitler and the Third Reich. Although much has been written about the virulently racist and anti-communist ideologies of the Nazi party, this is the first book to treat Nazi imperialism as a separate ideology and set it within a sturdy theoretical framework. Smith contends that Nazi imperialism represented the last, ambitious attempt to integrate two century-old ideologies--the elite, pro-industrial Weltpolitik and the popular-based, pro-agrarian Lebensraum--into a single system. In fact, Smith argues that it was largely the way in which the Nazis attempted to reconcile these contradictory ideologies that explains Germany's disastrous policies during World War II. This wide-ranging study also contributes to the debates over several other aspects of German history, including German military aims in World War II, the continuity--or discontinuity--of German policy from Bismarck to Hitler, and the relation between ideology and social-political life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American historians have long been fascinated by the "peopling" of North America in the seventeenth century. Who were the immigrants, and how and why did they make their way across the ocean? Most of the attention, however, has been devoted to British immigrants who came as free people or as indentured servants (primarily to New England and the Chesapeake) and to Africans who were forced to come as slaves. Trade in Strangers focuses on the eighteenth century, when new immigrants began to flood the colonies at an unprecedented rate. Most of these immigrants were German and Irish, and they were coming primarily to the middle colonies via an increasingly sophisticated form of transport. Wokeck shows how first the German system of immigration, and then the Irish system, evolved from earlier, haphazard forms into modern mass transoceanic migration. At the center of this development were merchants on both sides of the Atlantic who organized a business that enabled them to make profitable use of underutilized cargo space on ships bound from Europe to the British North American colonies. This trade offered German and Irish immigrants transatlantic passage on terms that allowed even people of little and modest means to pursue opportunities that beckoned in the New World. Trade in Strangers fills an important gap in our knowledge of America's immigration history. The eighteenth-century changes established a model for the better-known mass migrations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which drew wave after wave of Europeans to the New World in the hope of making a better life than the one they left behind—a story that is familiar to most modern Americans.

Book Die deutsche Pr senz in den USA

Download or read book Die deutsche Pr senz in den USA written by Josef Raab and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2008 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas the cultural and political influence of the U.S. on Europe and Germany has been researched extensively, the impact of more than 6 million German immigrants on U.S.-American history and culture has received far less scholarly attention. Therefore this volume addresses a wide range of areas in which a German presence has been manifesting itself in the U.S. for more than three centuries. Among the disciplines involved in this broad analysis are linguistics, literary studies, history, economics, musicology as well as media studies and cultural studies.
