Book excerpt: An illustrated selection of highlights from The Albertina's world-renowned collection of prints, drawings and paintings, featuring works from Old Masters as well as modern artists. The largest of the Hapsburg residential palaces, The Albertina in Vienna provides a stunning home to one of the largest and most important print rooms in the world. Named after its founder, passionate art collector Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (1738-1822), the priceless collection comprises 50,000 drawings and watercolours and some 900,000 prints ranging from the late Gothic period to contemporary art. Here visitors can see world-famous works by da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael as well as Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt and Cézanne. The modern collection contains a vibrant array of works from a diverse range of artists: from Schiele, Klimt, Picasso and Pollock to Warhol, Katz, Baselitz and Kiefer. An extraordinary treasure trove of visual knowledge, The Albertina has also been gathering photographs since the mid-19th century, and holds around 50,000 plans, sketches and models in its Architecture Collection. This small volume showcases the highlights from this vast collection, as chosen by its Director. Follow @AlbertinaMuseum on Twitter (7350 followers).

Book excerpt: Alex Katz (born 1927) is best known as a painter--specifically, as a painter of his family and his distinguished circle of friends, including poets, writers and artists. In the early 1950s, he began experimenting with printmaking, but it was not until the mid 1960s that he intensified his interest and production in the medium. Pushing at the limits of various printing techniques, Katz tested out pictorial ideas first conceived for his paintings, retaining planes of matte color but further simplifying his forms and dramatically cropping his images. These reduced compositions were wonderfully compatible with the graphic clarity of printmaking, and by effectively translating his paintings into prints, the artist achieved what he called the "final synthesis of painting." This publication provides insight into an often-neglected yet vital aspect of Katz's work, from the early 1950s to the present day.

Book The Renaissance of Etching

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Jenkins
  • Publisher : Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Release : 2019-10-21
  • ISBN : 1588396495

Download or read book The Renaissance of Etching written by Catherine Jenkins and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Renaissance of Etching is a groundbreaking study of the origins of the etched print. Initially used as a method for decorating armor, etching was reimagined as a printmaking technique at the end of the fifteenth century in Germany and spread rapidly across Europe. Unlike engraving and woodcut, which required great skill and years of training, the comparative ease of etching allowed a wide variety of artists to exploit the expanding market for prints. The early pioneers of the medium include some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, such as Albrecht Dürer, Parmigianino, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who paved the way for future printmakers like Rembrandt, Goya, and many others in their wake. Remarkably, contemporary artists still use etching in much the same way as their predecessors did five hundred years ago. Richly illustrated and including a wealth of new information, The Renaissance of Etching explores how artists in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and France developed the new medium of etching, and how it became one of the most versatile and enduring forms of printmaking. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Book Maria Lassnig

Download or read book Maria Lassnig written by Anita Haldemann and published by . This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three years after the death of one of the great contemporary artists of Austria, this publication pays homage to the drawings and watercolours of Maria Lassnig (1919?2014). Hitherto completely unknown sheets are revealed in the exhibition as key works; together with familiar ones they explore new insights of the multi-faceted work of this internationally famous Austrian artist.00At the centre of Lassnig?s fascinating and independent creative work lie profound emotions. The revelation of physical feelings and the act of tracking them down form the heart of her works which focus on body awareness. The artist commits her impression to paper in a humorous but serious manner which is as full of longing as it is merciless. The physical world which she experiences enters into a dialogue with the visible exterior world, both in nature and in the big city. Lassnig?s drawings and watercolours frequently anticipate central themes of her painting or accompany it in autonomous variations, demonstrating their central importance within her artistic oeuvre.0Exhibition: Albertina Museum, Vienna, Austria (05.05.-27.08.2017).
