Book Austria Hungary Classic Reprint

Download or read book Austria Hungary Classic Reprint written by David Kay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Austria-Hungary IT is sometimes said that Englishmen as a rule know comparatively little of foreign countries and of probably no other foreign country of the same importance - pre senting so many points of interest to us, or having so many claims on our attention, do we actually know so little as of Austria of the present day. When we think of it, it is rather of the Austria of the past than of the present - the Austria of before 1848 or 1866 - the absolute monarchy the oppressor of nationalities the suppressor of free institutions, and of nearly every form of liberty among its people; the upholder of harassing restrictions against trade, commerce, and industry and in fine so conservative of everything old and established, and so little given to change, as to merit the designation of the China of Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Austria-Hungary, Vol. 2 To gain some grip of these matters a short historical introduction is undoubtedly necessary. I do not think, however, that history should always begin at the beginning, though many people have a passion for delving into the past and groping after the roots of a subject, which often prove, when unearthed, to be exceedingly dry. The same tendency may be observed in writers Of biography, who are rarely content to begin with the man or woman whose life they are undertaking, or even with their parents, but frequently go back through many centuries, dwelling at dreary length upon tedious details which occupy half the book before the pith and core of the matter is reached. Hence in this very cursory sketch of the Dual Monarchy only so much as is essential to give colour and life to the whole book in all its aspects Shall be dealt with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Austria-Hungary: The Polyglot Empire Side by side with such matter as tends to elucidate this paramount object, there also appears information in the body of this book which may interest the reader for its own sake. A good deal of it rests on the personal im pressions of the writer. Some readers may like the book the better for that. One more remark. I think I may honestly claim for myself to be actuated by no conscious bias in dealing with political, social and racial questions discussed here. Cer tainly none has swayed my judgment in looking towards ultimate ends. The political reforms urgently called for, both in Hungary and Austria, to bring those two coun tries abreast of the times, abreast of the West, are not subject to opinion; they are demanded by the facts them selves. Neither has my sincere liking for and sympathy with the people of austria-hungary blinded me to their serious failings; failings, however, which, nearly all of them, do more harm to themselves than to others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whirlpool of Europe: Austria-Hungary and the Habsburgs No attempt has been made, either in text or illustra tions, to do justice to the wonderful scenery which is the framework of this picture of national and political evo lation. To do so would involve not one but several volumes, and the present work is merely an outline which the reader may fill in at his leisure by reference to more detailed studies. The authors feel that the historical sketch may alarm some readers by its scope, but it was found impossible to give a true impression of modern Austria and Hungary without tracing their connection with the extinct Holy Roman Empire and the modern German one, or without following, from its earliest stages, the career of the House of Habsburg. The key to the situa tion lies to a great extent in the historical evolution of the various parts of the Dual Monarchy and in their relations to the ruling house. Book Francis Joseph Emperor of Austria King of Hungary Classic Reprint

Download or read book Francis Joseph Emperor of Austria King of Hungary Classic Reprint written by Eugene Bagger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary The collapse of the austro-hungarian Empire is perhaps the most fateful and irrevocable result of the Great War. Not quite a decade has passed since the tragicomedy of Versailles, and Germany is a great power once more; so is Russia; the epochal rivalries have shifted ground, but not abated in intensity, while their potential dangers have probably increased. But the Empire of the Habsburgs seems to have vanished for ever. The dismemberment of austria-hungary in the sacred name of national self-determination has been hailed as a boon. In the sense that it was inevitable, it is a boon; for in politics the obstruction of the inevitable is one of the greatest of evils: its wages are war and revolution. This book is, in one of its aspects, an attempt to re interpret, in the terms of the life and character of a single individual, strategically placed in a position of unique power, the inevitability of what was perhaps the greatest political catastrophe of modern times: the downfall of the ancient Empire of Habsburg, last heir of _charlemagne. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Austria of the Austrians and Hungary of the Hungarians Nti on the Danube, the ideas of the English concerning it are most hazy. The writer, on being introduced to English people as an Austrian, has been asked the queerest questions - and indeed, it must be confusing to meet Germans, Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Ruthenians, Slovenes, Servians, Croatians, Italians, Roumanians, and Jews all describing themselves as Austrians, not to Speak of the several hundred thousand Bulgarians, Albanese, Turks, Armenians, Greeks, and Gipsies who also live in our midst, but, not being represented in the House of Parliament, do not count. In the pursuit Of these Oh jects the statecraft Of St. Petersburg has sought to control the Balkan states and to prevent any of them, especially a vigorous and progressive Bul garia, from occupying Constantinople, the key to the Dardanelles. Book Austro Hungarian Life in Town and Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Austro Hungarian Life in Town and Country Classic Reprint written by Francis H. E. Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Austro-Hungarian Life in Town and Country Austro-hungarian, though it is the only name we can give to the dominions of the Emperor Francis Joseph, is apt to be somewhat misleading. The Germanic Austrians and the Hungarians, or Magyars, taken together, form less than half the total population. The majority of the Austro Hungarian peoples, therefore, belong to races which are neither Austrian nor Hungarian, properly so called. Most of them are of Slavonic origin; but they, too, are broken up into numer ous races, more or less distinct from one another in language, religion, and habits of life. Czechs, Croatians and Servians, Ruthenes, Poles, Slo vaks, and austrian-bulgarians are all Slavonic races, nearly akin to, and sometimes identical with, others who dwell beyond the frontiers of austria-hungary. Quite separate from all these are races more nearly allied to the Latin group, such as the Roumanians or Wallachians and Italians in part of the Austrian Tyrol and the Coast-lands. Nor are these all. There are, be sides, Over two million Jews, and considerable fragments Of other races - Greeks, Turks, and Gipsies. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Austro-Hungary From the Earliest Time to the Year 1889 Of separate histories of Hungary, Bohemia, and some smaller lands. And from this some readers might have shrunk. And even after the various lands had been brought under the rule of a common sovereign, it would still have been hard to tell the story of all in a single continuous narrative. M. Leger has not attempted to do so. It is perhaps a gain that his subject and his book involve a certain amount of thinking and a certain amount of looking backwards and around. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary The sketch of the chequered career of Elizabeth of austria-hungary cannot fail to interest, and to the many who know but little beyond the details of her tragic death, the accidents of heredity, environment and sorrow, so accurately treated by the authoress, must prove acceptable. It is but the foreground of human life we can examine with any exactness, and even a pro founder study of the empress-queen than this claims to be, would fail to give more than an outline of events with which she was connected. Book Austro Hungarian Red Book

Download or read book Austro Hungarian Red Book written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Austro-Hungarian Red Book: Official English Edition With an Introduction Ever since the Karageorgevitch Dynasty ascended Servia's bloodstained throne, surrounded by the conspirators against King Alexander, the policy of the kingdom has been directed by various means and with varying intensity toward a hostile propaganda and a revolutionary agitation in those territories of Austria-Hungary which are inhabited by South-Slavs. This underground policy has been aimed at the forcible separation of these territories from the Dual Monarchy, when the general political situation should favor the attainment of the aspirations for the establishment of a Greater Servia. The bitter disappointment caused in Servia by the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which drove the Servian nation to the brink of war, shows plainly what ambitious hopes were entertained by Servia and how near she thought herself to be to the goal. In the spring of 1909, Russia, though assuming the part of the protecting power, considered her armaments not sufficiently advanced to support Servia. Under the circumstances the Servian government decided to declare solemnly before Europe that it recognized the international situation created by the annexation as an act which had not affected Servia's rights. The Servian government furthermore undertook to dissolve the irregular bands which had armed against the Dual Monarchy and to maintain good neighborly relations with the latter for the future. The Austro-Hungarian government looked forward to the restoration of the peace and good understanding with Servia which had prevailed under the Obrenovitch Dynasty. It hoped to be enabled to promote Servia's interests in the friendly spirit which had been evidenced by Austria-Hungary at the Berlin Congress, when she successfully advocated the recognition of the independence of the kingdom. These Austro-Hungarian hopes were not to be fulfilled, however. Far from respecting the pledge of good neighborly relations, the Servian government permitted the Servian press to rouse unrestrained hatred against the Monarchy; it tolerated societies in Servia which, under the leadership of high officers, functionaries, teachers and judges, publicly carried on an agitation aiming to precipitate a revolutionary outbreak in Austro-Hungarian territories; it permitted prominent officers of the Servian military and civil services to demoralize the public conscience to the point where assassination was regarded as a legitimate weapon against the adjoining monarchy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret Treaties of Austria-Hungary: 1879-1914 Professor Pribram naturally writes from the Austrian point of view, but with a dispassionateness that is extraordinary for one who has just seen his country ruined by a disastrous war which has left her but a fragment of her former self. We cannot but admire the calmness and moderation with which he writes of things so near to him and so closely connected with the present catastrophe. Even when his statements occasionally betray a not unnatural bias, there has been little temptation to comment upon or to modify them. Book Little Journeys to Russia and Austria Hungary Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to Russia and Austria-Hungary Russia is a country where the Ice King reigns half the year; where in winter the rivers freeze so deeply that railroads can be built on them, and sledge roads are made the full length of their shining surface; where the lakes are ploughed by huge steamers which in stead of cutting the waves bore their way through the ice; where sleighs fly over the slippery streets for so many months of the year that when summer really comes the horses seem unable' to slacken their speed, but tear along the road at the same mad pace, dragging the carriages after them. The thermometer shows so many degrees of cold in this country that one's nose may become frosted before he knows it and have to be rubbed with snow to save it from freezing. The rich bundle up in furs until the city streets look like an animal exhibit, while the poor do not take off their clothing even at bed time, but lie down to sleep, on top of their immense brick stoves, with their sheepskin coats still on. Download or read book The Schools of Austria Hungary Vol 9 Classic Reprint written by Peter Henry Pearson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schools of Austria-Hungary, Vol. 9 Austrian, feeling for the State has never been sufficiently strong to supplant the attachment for his native crownland. In Germany there was, in 1900, only one case of illiteracy among recruits, while in Austria there were 356. Since then the figures have become considerably less. This result should be judged in the light of the fact that Germany examines her young men at the time of recruiting, while Austria and Hungary at the time of taking the census. In Germany three generations have passed since school attendance was made obligatory, while in Austria two and in Hun gary only one. The incessant conflict among 8, 9, or 10 different races has obscured the View in respect to social, cultural, and educational needs, and here is at least one cause of the lack of determination vigorously to combat the condition of illiteracy that prevails.
