Book Italy in the Nineteenth Century and the Making of Austria Hungary and Germany Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy in the Nineteenth Century and the Making of Austria-Hungary and Germany I Have Stated, I think, several times in this book why the history of Italy is very hard to write. I need not repeat my reasons here. It had been my intention to say to my large circle of readers (who seem almost my personal friends) that "Italy" would be the last volume in this Nineteenth Century series. Very probably it may be so. Yet, when I consider how picturesque a subject Spain would be, with its war of the Constitution; its Carlist struggles; the sad history of the Spanish marriages, and their consequences; King Amadeo; Alfonso XII. and his sweet wife, Mercedes; and the Regency of Queen Christina; also how acceptable some intelligible account might be of the connection of Spain with Cuban affairs (if such an account in the next twelve months should be procurable), I am tempted to undertake it. It may seem to some that the chapters on Austria-Hungary and Germany have very slight connection with the story of Italy, yet I think it needs them. Without some brief account of contemporary events in those countries, my narrative would look to me like an unfinished seam left with a "ragged edge." Download or read book The Austro Prussian War written by Geoffrey Wawro and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-07-13 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new history of the Austro-Prussian-Italian War of 1866, which paved the way for German and Italian unification. Geoffrey Wawro describes Prussia's successful invasion of Habsburg Bohemia, and the wretched collapse of the Austrian army in July 1866. Blending military and social history, he describes the panic that overtook Austria's regiments in each clash with the Prussians. He reveals the blundering of the Austrian commandant who fumbled away key strategic advantages and ultimately lost a war--crucial to the fortunes of the Habsburg Monarchy--that most European pundits had predicted they would win.
