Download or read book Austrian Reconstruction and the Collapse of Global Finance 1921 1931 written by Nathan Marcus and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an archive-based study of the political and financial history of the 1920s, this book examines how and why international capital teamed up with the League of Nations to bail out the Austrian state after the First World War, and what consequences the intervention carried for Austrian politics and finance. While the existing literature on the League of Nations sees the organization's intervention during the 1920s as mostly positive and successful, Austrian historians decried it as a financial dictatorship that ended in disaster. In contrast, the book claims that while the League of Nations' involvement was essentially responsible for terminating Austrian hyperinflation in 1922, its representatives remained largely immobilized in Vienna, with the Austrian government in control. The League ceased its involvement Austria in 1926, though aware of the latter's financial and political instability. The subsequent collapse of the Austrian Credit-Anstalt bank in 1931, however, was successfully contained with international help within just a few weeks. Thus, it could not have triggered and was not responsible for the larger European banking panics in Germany and Britain that summer.--

Book Historical Dictionary of Austria

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Austria written by Paula Sutter Fichtner and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-06-11 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austrians today often seem to believe that they have two histories. One is their republican present; the other, the centuries that their forebears spent as part of the multi-ethnic Habsburg Empire. Contemporary Austria is a fixture among Europe's democracies. Yet, it did not achieve this state easily: World War I, the unification with Germany in 1938, and World War II were catastrophes for Austria. In 1995, it became part of the European Union, and its government, culture, and egalitarian economy are far cries from the monarchical and highly stratified society of the old Empire. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Austria has been thoroughly updated and greatly expanded. Through its chronology, introductory essay, appendix, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries, greater attention has been given to foreign affairs, economic institutions and policies, social issues, religion, and politics.

Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize Winner and landmark book from one of the truly original scholars of our time: a magnificent revelation of turn-of-the-century Vienna where out of a crisis of political and social disintegration so much of modern art and thought was born. "Not only is it a splendid exploration of several aspects of early modernism in their political context; it is an indicator of how the discipline of intellectual history is currently practiced by its most able and ambitious craftsmen. It is also a moving vindication of historical study itself, in the face of modernism's defiant suggestion that history is obsolete." -- David A. Hollinger, History Book Club Review "Each of [the seven separate studies] can be read separately....Yet they are so artfully designed and integrated that one who reads them in order is impressed by the book's wholeness and the momentum of its argument." -- Gordon A. Craig, The New Republic "A profound work...on one of the most important chapters of modern intellectual history" -- H.R. Trevor-Roper, front page, The New York Times Book Review "Invaluable to the social and political historian...as well as to those more concerned with the arts" -- John Willett, The New York Review of Books "A work of original synthesis and scholarship. Engrossing." -- Newsweek

Book Austria Culture Smart

Download or read book Austria Culture Smart written by Peter Gieler and published by Kuperard. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austria has produced some of the world's finest composers, dazzled us with an imperial Baroque architecture, and led the way with groundbreaking psychoanalysis. It has taught us to waltz, defined what a real coffee house is, and given us one of Europe's most popular winter playgrounds. All this from one small nation, roughly the size of South Carolina. Historically the country was a land of transit along the Danube route, and the meeting of Germanic, Mediterranean, and Eastern European peoples helped to shape the Austrians of today. They have turned their heritage and culture to good advantage, developed new high-tech industries, established relationships with their former Communist neighbors as well as their EU partners, and have enjoyed a small economic miracle. Culture Smart! Austria describes the real people in the picture postcard, offering key insights into everyday Austrian life and equipping you to discover for yourself the many qualities of this lively people.

Book Austria in the European Union

Download or read book Austria in the European Union written by Anton Pelinka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austria joined the European Union in 1995, with the overwhelming support of its citizenry. In June 1994, a record 66.6 percent of the Austrian population voted in favor of joining the Union, and Austria acceded on January 1, 1995. Only three years later, in the second half of 1998, Austria assumed its first presidency of the European Union. Its competent conduct of the Union's business enhanced its reputation. The sense that Austria was a role model collapsed overnight, after a new conservative People's Party (iVP/FPi) coalition government was formed in Austria in early February 2000. Austria became Europe's nightmare. This volume has two purposes. The first is to assess Austria's first five years in the European Union. The second is Austria's ongoing struggle with its past. Heinrich Neisser evaluates and assesses Austria's commitment to the European Union. Thomas Angerer offers a long-term perspective of regionalization and globalization trends in Austrian foreign affairs. Waldemar Hummer analyzes contradictions between Austrian neutrality and Europe's emerging common security policy. Johannes Pollak and Sonja Puntscher Rieckmann look at current debates over weighing future voting rights in the European Commission. Michael Huelshoff evaluates Austria's EU presidency in 1998 and compares it to the subsequent 1999 German presidency. Gerda Falkner examines the withering away of the previously much admired Austrian welfare state. Walter Manoschek scrutinizes the Nazi roots of Jorg Haider's Freedom Party. Michael Gehler critiques the EU sanctions and bemoans the absence of mediation through transnational Christian conservative parties. In reviewing how Austria deals with World War II, Richard Mitten investigates discourses on victimhood in postwar Austria and the place of Jews in this process. A "Roundtable" presents overwhelming evidence of Austrians' deep involvement in Nazi war crimes, and includes articles by Sabine Loitfellner and Winfried Garscha. This addition to the Contemporary Austrian Studies series will be welcomed by political scientists, historians and legal scholars, particularly those with a strong interest in European affairs.

Book excerpt: While the end of the US's civil war marked a boom in US tourism in Europe, Austria's own civil war in 1934 both curtailed American tourism in Austria and marked a small, but important, wave of Austrian emigration to the US. The essays in this volume explore the ways Austrian-born immigrants in those years defined their own identities as American citizens; how they interpreted, performed, and profited from "American" modernity at home; and how their work - as immigrating authors, film makers, and musicians - impacted mainstream culture in the US, illuminating often overlooked connections, not only between Austria and America, but also between Austrians and Americans.
