This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Tales, and Sketches From Real Life Most of the following tales and sketches have appeared in the Sydney Mail; and I have good reason to believe that they have been favourably received by thousands of subscribers to that influential newspaper. In publishing them in a volume, I am yielding to the persuasion of many kind friends, who have expressed their belief that they Will be well received, and be useful. I have spent much time in altering and improving all the articles; and they Will be fresh to my old readers. The fact of the articles having appeared in the columns of the Sydney Mail, will be a sufficient guarantee to parents, that they need not scruple to place the volume in the hands of their children. I will only add, that there is nothing controversial or see tarian in it; and I have used my utmost efforts to make it both amusing and instructive. English readers will find many phases of Australian life depicted for which I claim this merit, that their accuracy may be relied on. Book Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life Classic Reprint written by William Henry Suttor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Stories Retold and Sketches of Country Life Telegraph in Sydney, they have beguiled many weary hours of their author at a time of much anxiety for all those who, like himself, were interested in the great pas toral industry of the country. Iam no judge of their merits, if, indeed, they have any. The first person who suggested their collection in this form was the late Chief Justice, Sir James Martin, who was pleased to speak in terms somewhat too laudatory of them, and in his rapid manner said, You must put them in a book, you know - you must put them in a book. Well, here they are in a book. There is little or nothing imagina tive in the volume. The Stories Retold are chiefly gathered from the Press records of the day, and from the word of mouth of old colonial friends who have some recollection of the events narrated. The Sketches of Country Life are derived almost wholly from my own experiences. The descriptions of men and scenery are exactly set down as they appeared to me. So many wonderful changes have taken place in colonial society since I was young, that I venture to h0pe the book may not prove uninteresting to those who have not been eyewitnesses of those changes. Book An Australian Christmas Collection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Australian Christmas Collection: Stories, Sketches, Essays Christmas being proverbially and traditionally the time for family reunions, it is only in accord with the spirit of the season that a writer should celebrate that great festival by bringing together the scattered productions of his pen, and placing them sociably side by side between the covers of one book. This volume is, for the most part, a selection from my contributions to Australian periodical and newspaper literature during the past few years. The acknowledgment of my grateful appreciation is due to the several hundred subscribers throughout the colonies, who have done me the honour of ordering copies of the book in advance of its publication. The heart Of a deep mine I A gold mine, with all its dim and rugged corridors, its tunnels and windings, lighted only by a dull taper here and there. There is no one at work, for it is Christmas Eve. Yet the underground region is not altogether untenanted. One man Whose duty it is to watch the place, until relieved on the morrow, lies coiled up asleep in one of the long drives. He is a young man, not tall, but strongly made, and with limbs like another Hercules. On account of his great strength and a certain good temper combined, his mates call him, Samson the Nugget. For what length of time the Nugget slumbered on this good Christmas Eve will never be known. Certain it is that he suddenly Opened his eyes and beheld one of the biggest, and withal one of the ugliest, hulking fellows he had ever seen standing over him. The Nugget was a brave youth, but fear began to take possession of him as he looked at the intruder-a giant in stature, with a huge, flat head upon his shoulder, and a mouth as large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Street Lamp: Vignettes of Australian Bush Life Much of the literature dealing with Australian bush life has represented, and for the most part, faithfully, the rougher, and it may be said the coarser and lower, elements in the charac ter of the back-blocks worker. But every one who knows the true Australian bushman knows that he has another side. Against the almost universal indulgence in drink, gambling, profanity, and general rowdyism, must be placed many noble characteristics. The horses are ready, and the moon is rising, and Dick, my best friend, and partner in the station, thrusts his head through an Open French window, he having left us an hour ago to order the horses to be run in from the horse paddock, a mile distant from the homestead, and to make arrangements generally for one of our little shooting diversions, without which life on a Sheep station in the bush would indeed become burdensome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coo-Ee: Tales of Australian Life by Australian Ladies IT is certainly 'a far cry' from the Antipodes to England and back again. Yet in the name of my Australian sisters who have contributed to this little volume, I venture to express a hope that our Coo-cc may succeed in making itself heard on either shore, and that its echoes may linger pleasantly around the Bush Station and by the English fireside. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Legendary Tales: Folklore of the Noongahburrahs as Told to the Picaninnies The time is coming when it will be impossible to make even such a collection as this, for the old blacks are quickly dying out, and the young ones will probably think it beneath the dignity of their so-called civilisation even to remember such old-women's stories. Those who have themselves attempted the study of an unknown folk-lore will be able to appreciate the difficulties a student has to surmount before he can even induce those to talk who have the knowledge he desires. In this, as in so much else, those who are ready to be garrulous know little. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He chose the colony in which our scene is laid as the most likely place in which to better his prospects, and here he arrived in the year 1840. He leased a small station, stocked it with sheep and cattle, throve apace, and at the period when our tale begins was one of the most extensive squatters in the country.
