Book excerpt: An overview of the evolution of Australian Rules football in Victoria from its origins in 1858 to the present day. The opening chapter provides a snapshot of the unusual 2020 AFL season. I then trace the evolution of the game in Victoria during the late 1800s including the background to the 1896 VFA/VFL split, followed by a chapter outlining the development of the two leagues during the 20th century. This is followed by chapters on all 18 AFL teams, including major team rivalries, great coaches, great indigenous players and great goalkickers. There are also chapters on how the various finals' systems work(ed) over the years, State of Origin and Laws of the Game. The book is chock full of statistics, trivia and footy anecdotes which will enthral any Aussie Rules fan.

Book Australian Rules Football During the First World War

Download or read book Australian Rules Football During the First World War written by Dale Blair and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the intersection between the Great War and patriotism through an examination of the effects of both on Australia’s most popular football code. The work is chronological, and therefore provides an easy path by which events may be followed. Ultimately it seeks to shine a light on and provide considerable detail to a much-ignored period in Australian Rules football history, including women’s football history, that was subject to much upheaval and which reflected considerable social and class divisions in society at the time. One hundred years on, the Australian Football League presents past soldier footballers as unequivocal representatives of a unifying national ‘Anzac’ spirit. That is far from the reality of football’s First World War experience.

Book excerpt: Today Australian Rules football is a multi - million - dollar business' with superstar players' high - profile presidents and enough scandals to fill a soap opera. The game has changed beyond recognition - or has it? In A Game of Our Own' esteemed historian Geoffrey Blainey documents the birth of our great national game. Who were the characters and champions of the early days of Australian football? How was the VFL formed? Why was the umpire's job so difficult? Blainey takes a sceptical look at the idea that the game had its origins in Ireland or in Aboriginal pastimes. Instead he demonstrates that footy was a series of inventions. The game played in 1880 was very different to that of 1860' just as the game played today is different again. Journey back to an era when the ground was not oval' when captains acted as umpires' when players wore caps and jerseys bearing forgotten colours and kicked a round ball that soon lost its shape. A Game of Our Own is a fascinating social history and a compulsory read for all true fans of the game.

Book Heartfelt Moments in Australian Rules Football

Download or read book Heartfelt Moments in Australian Rules Football written by Ross Fitzgerald and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These thirty seven contributions of original essays about the most heartfelt moments in VFL/AFL cut across all divides. Essays include contributions by and about football players, supporters and administrators who are vastly different in religion, class, income, ethnicity, gender, race and sexual preference. The contributors range from Christians such as Cardinal George Pell, Geraldine Doogue, and John Birt to atheists like Ross Fitzgerald, Dick Whitaker and Barry Dickins. Even in politics AFL/VFL unites with contributions from Labor's shadow treasurer Chris Bowen; Liberal Minister for Resources, Energy and Northern Australia, Josh Frydenberg; Liberal Foreign Minister Julie Bishop; ex Liberal federal minister Amanda Vanstone and ex Victorian premier, Jeff Kennett. Also a number of contributors uncover how, over the decades, our great game has developed, often for the good, but sometimes not, in terms of its treatment of indigenous players and its dealings with women. Being a lifelong supporter of a club, any club involves a lot of downs and ups. At the very least, to be a true supporter means never giving up or relinquishing one's team. Indeed it means even more than that. Ultimately it is the downs that enable supporters to show their true colours and the depth of their personal attachment and commitment to each club. Thus, as Roger Kahn wrote, in his case about the Brooklyn Dodgers: "You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat. Book excerpt: 'I have yet to find a game that carries as much pleasure, as much harmless excitement, and as much stimulus as the Australasian game of football... The game is Australian in its origin, Australian in its principle, and, I venture to say, essentially Australian in its development.' - Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, 1908 From its humble origins 150 years ago to the multi-million dollar budgets of today's elite teams, Australian Rules football has become a major industry. A truly home-grown sport, it has become embedded into the culture of the nation. But how did it all begin, and what happened along the way to make the game the great spectacle that it is today? And at what cost? Have the grassroots levels of the code been obscured by the commercial interests of the AFL? With original research, and including several never-before-published images, this is the only comprehensive history of the evolution of the game from the nineteenth century to the present day. It describes, for the first time, how and why Australian Rules football came to dominate the national sporting landscape.

Book How to Transform Australian Rules Football Into a World Game

Download or read book How to Transform Australian Rules Football Into a World Game written by Geoffrey Higges and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During my time in Australia during WWII, I enjoyed playing many sports including Australian Rules Football, and I loved following the local Victorian Football League (VFL). Back in England after the war, I was asked to describe the game to a class of secondary students. I drew a big oval on the blackboard, and filled it with the 18 players from each side. I described the shape of the ball, and explained how you could drop-kick it, or punt it, and also that you could pass the ball by punching it out of your hands, but that you were not allowed to throw it, and I explained the scoring system. No one believed me, and their incredulity increased when I tried to explain some of the other amazing rules of play - not surprising perhaps when even Australian Umpires themselves have so much difficulty interpreting the rules. From the original 334 words involving just 10 rules, the current Laws of Australian Rules Football have increased to 20,000 words involving 600 clauses and sub-clauses. This makes fair and consistent umpiring an impossible task, and means that outsiders have no chance of understanding the game. This might also mean that after well over 100 years, the locally popular game has not spread substantially to other countries. The other enduring problem is the amazing way the Australian Football League (AFL) organises the playing season of the top professional league. For example, each club does not play each other club in a fair home and away season; instead, most teams play a different set of opponents from each other during a full season. In this book a brief description of Australian Rules Football is provided for those not entirely familiar with the game, together with a list of many of the current playing laws; then 13 rule changes are proposed that would make decision making more clear cut, while at the same time creating fewer stoppages and a greater flow on of the game. In addition the author asks for a rethink in the organisation of the Australian Football League which would solve the unfairness of the league's schedule, and greatly enhance the acceptance and excitement of the game as a whole. Such changes would mean even greater enjoyment for players and spectators alike, and enhance the opportunity for Australian Rules Football to become a World Game.

Book Australian Rules Football and Distributive Justice

Download or read book Australian Rules Football and Distributive Justice written by Ralph Gotlib and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Rules football captures the public imagination like no other sport in the country, commanding an almost religious following and monopolising the media. A number of economic and social goods are produced, especially by or through the Australian Football League. Australian football has never been more popular; yet, there are concerns about changes to how the game is played, how it is governed, and who benefits. Corporatisation is often blamed for undermining traditions, suggesting an increased need for public accountability. What is 'good for the game' in the modern era is a complex question that cannot be resolved by simply a sentimental appeal to tradition or a by a wholesale condemnation of corporatisation. This thesis introduces a set of tools for the analysis and evaluation of goods allocation in Australian football. These tools comprise MacIntyre's 'practice-institution' concept, theories of distributive justice, and social-cultural analysis.

Download or read book Immortals written by Lionel Frost and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Rules Football fanatic and Melbourne academic Lionel Frost has written this fascinating history of the sport through the careers of some of the greats. He shows how AFL (Australian Football League) has developed from an amateur, local sport to the professional, national industry that it is today. It explores the ways in which the lives and careers of players, coaches and administrators were shaped by the times in which they lived, and how their responses to challenges and opportunities in turn shaped the development of the game. In a broader sense, it is a series of stories about Australians, and about life in Australia, that all Australians will be able to relate to. Based on new research, and covering all states in which Australian Rules is the major code, the book features the careers of people such as Norm and Len Smith, John Kennedy, Jack Oatey, through to modern ?gures such as Tim Watson and Jason Akermanis. All of the living subjects, and in many cases the families of those who are deceased, have co-operated fully in the research and provided unpublished source material such as letters and notebooks. Foreword by Ron Barassi.
