  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Richard Larter written by Deborah Hart and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recognizes and celebrates the work of one of Australia's most significant and engaging artists. Working from the late 1950s through to the present, Larter's work is at times audacious, confronting, political, and in many works the result of a passionate collaboration with his wife Pat. It confirms the artist's place as a remarkable colorist, a technical innovator and a painter of radiant luminosity. Written by curator and art historian Deborah Hart with Deborah Clark and Joanna Mendelssohn, the book also includes reminiscence from one of Larter's models, Nell. The lively and engaging essays convey the key themes in the artist's oeuvre - an ongoing interest in the human body and sexuality, popular culture, politics, opposition to censorship and feeling for the landscape. It traverses his figurative and non-figurative works revealing his mastery of abstract patterning, his abiding interest in current music, in science and natural phenomena. A chapter devoted to the relationship between Richard and Pat Larter (an artist in her own right, who died in 1996) looks at their unique collaborations which resulted in one of the most dynamic creative partnerships in Australian art.

Book excerpt: Grahame Kings life as an artist began with his mastery of the new art of colour reproduction as a photolithographic colour etcher in Melbourne in the 1930s. At the same time, study at the National Gallery Art School with George Bell assisted his development as a painter. After war service and travels abroad, King returned to Melbourne with his wife, the sculptor Inge King. The two held a number of joint exhibitions of paintings and sculptures in Australia throughout the 1950s and then, from c.1962 Grahame King turned his attention, increasingly, towards the art of lithography becoming a master in this field of printmaking. He has also devoted himself to promoting the art of lithography and printmaking generally through the Print Council of Australia. He is often called Australias patron saint of printmaking. The book examines his seven decades working as an artist in Melbourne and is lavishly illustrated with colour reproductions throughout.

Book excerpt: "In this first major study of the artist, David Ellis has examined the artist's sources and influences - some obvious, some hidden and not easily specified - over a career of almost fifty years. He makes a point of continually placing the artist in context of his time, showing how he responds to and diverges from the influences around him. In doing so he presents a lively individual analysis of aspects of Australian art from the 1940s to the present as well as relating these to the special case of Robert Grieve."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
