In addition the forms of assistance in Canada are no more than weakly linked to pigmeat production. 12. Assistance to pig and pigmeat producers in the US is unlikely to have an appreciable effect on either US or Canadian export prices for pigmeat. 13. Good welfare of farmed pigs will ensure that pigs cope well in their environment and that factors such as growth, reproductive performance, disease levels, injuries and death rates are within industry standards. The Code recognizes that the basic requirement for the welfare of pigs is a husbandry system, managed by trained and skilled stock-people to ensure that basic needs of pigs are met: * Readily accessible appropriate and sufficient food and water * Adequate shelter to protect from climatic extremes * Opportunity to display appropriate patterns of behaviour * Physical handling in a manner which minimizes the likelihood of unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress * Protection from, and/or rapid diagnosis and correct treatment of injury or disease * Freedom for necessary movement including to stand, stretch and lie down * Visual and social contact with other pigs This Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals has been prepared by the Animal Welfare Working Group (AWWG) for the Primary Industries Ministerial Council (PIMC). The AWWG is made up of representatives from CSIRO, Animal Health Australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia, and from each of the State Departments responsible for agriculture. Extensive consultation has taken place with industry and animal welfare organisations in the development of the Code. This new edition supercedes the Second Edition, SCARM Report 66

Book Australian Pigmeat Industry

Download or read book Australian Pigmeat Industry written by Productivity Commission and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Productivity Commission's inquiry report into the Australian Pigmeat Industry, was released on 16 August 2005. The Commission was asked to examine the competitive situation and outlook for the pigmeat industry in Australia. It found that while the pig producing and processing sectors continue to experience structural change, the industry is being increasingly integrated into world markets and profitability is on the rise after a slum between 2002 and 2003. Some key findings from the report included: continuing improvements to internal practices are important for maintaining competitiveness with foreign competitors; assessments into the benefits and costs of R&D programs are critical to monitor the effectiveness with which the R&D programs are managed; an ongoing role for the Australian Government to press for reduced overseas barriers to pigmeat exports; the Government to ensure any regulatory requirements - such as those related to quarantine, planning and development, animal welfare and environmental impacts - are the minimum necessary to achieve their objectives. The Commission concluded that additional government assistance for the industry was not warranted.
