Book excerpt: Celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Australian Labor Party (ALP)-one of the oldest labor parties in the world and the first to form a government-this short and lively book recounts ALP's history from its origins during the late 19th century through present day. The book details the party's numerous successes in winning government at all levels and its policymaking that has transformed lives, as well as demonstrating how the ALP has attracted an extraordinary range of members, parliamentary representatives, leaders, unionists, activists and, indeed, opponents. The ALP has been a central force in Australia throughout the 20th century, and this concise chronicle tells the story of their triumphs and crises, their colorful characters and famed members, and their evolving aspirations. Nick Dyrenfurth is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Sydney. Frank Bongiorno is a senior lecturer at the Menzies Center for Australian Studies and Department of History at King's College London.

Book A Little History of the Australian Labor Party

Download or read book A Little History of the Australian Labor Party written by Nick Dyrenfurth and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed historians Nick Dyrenfurth and Frank Bongiorno tell the story of the Australian Labor Party’s rich history of more than 130 years and examine its central role in modern Australia. The Australian Labor Party is one of the oldest labour parties in the world and the first to form a government. From the prime ministerships of Watson and Fisher to the tragedies of Hughes and Scullin, through the 1940s legends Curtin and Chifley to governments of Whitlam, Hawke, Keating, Rudd and Gillard, A Little History of the Australian Labor Party recounts times of triumph and failure, as well as resilience. This updated edition examines Labor’s recent performance in state and territory politics and takes the national story up to the Albanese government. ‘Informative and insightful, the authors shrewdly marshal the key events, policies and personalities in Labor’s long and lively history to tell the compelling story of the party that has shaped Australia more than any other. I enjoyed it immensely.’ — Troy Bramston ‘The history of Australia’s Labor Party is the story of how ordinary men and women dreamed, organised, argued and raged to form a political movement that has weathered wars, depressions, financial crises, bitter splits, rivalries and betrayals, and yet forged great alliances to shape this country into a good and safe place to live. The story of Labor is the story of a nation that was not born on a distant battlefield, but in the homes and workplaces, pubs and halls where people gathered to make the world better. This enthralling, questing book is not just great Labor history, it is great Australian history.’ — Janet McCalman

Book excerpt: The Labor Split of the 1950s changed the whole shape of Australian politics, but until now it has been clouded by myths and the emotions of the opposing factions. 'The Split' penetrates this confusion and with the aid of 'inside information' examines the complex series of events that led to this momentous breakdown. The story of the split has its roots in the war years when the Communist Party of Australia was quietly building up its strength in the trade unions in the wake of the 'gallant ally' period of sympathy for Russia. By the post war years, however, ex-communists, dedicated Catholics, the ALP and trade union leaders all contributed to an intense anti-communist climate and to the formation of the ALP Industrial Groups. The decision to form these groups created tensions and factions which affected all core institutions in the maze of Labor power centres - federal and state executives and conferences, the trades and labor councils, and the unions. The split had run its course by the spring of 1957, but it left the Australian Labor Party seemingly permanently weakened and incapable of attaining office either nationally or in the worst affected states. Repercussions from this period have been felt ever since and now 'The Split' explains the background in a dramatic narrative of intrigues, dedications and wheeler dealing.

Book The Write Stuff Voice of Unity on Labor s Future

Download or read book The Write Stuff Voice of Unity on Labor s Future written by Misha Zelinsky and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Labor Party has forgotten how to win national elections. Federal Labor finds itself with only one in three Australians prepared to give it their vote. It has arrived at a historic tipping point that if not fixed potentially spells the end for one of the world's oldest and most successful social democratic parties. Caught between its more conservative working-class base in Australia's suburbs and regions and its inner-city progressive activists, Labor appears unable to bridge a growing chasm, and unable to build winning national coalitions. The 129-year-old ALP only succeeds when its right-wing, known as Labor Unity or Centre Unity, is on top of its game. The Write Stuff: Voices of Unity on Labor's Future features thirty essays on the way forward for Labor and Australia. Its contributors are drawn from across the nation's expanses - new and established voices, members of federal and state parliaments, and leading unionists. With the defeat at the last election and postponement of Labor's national conference there is a vacuum at the heart of the ALP - a genuine battle of ideas and vigorous policy debate. The Write Stuff provides that contest in spades. As its chapters testify, ideas remain powerful tools in our nation's public debate. Big ideas and sharp thinking - politics with purpose - will underpin a Labor comeback in the twenty-first century. We do not intend to be the last ones to turn out the lights on the way out for the ALP. Labor needs to be bigger, not smaller: a bigger and more diverse party reflective of modern Australia, and a party of bigger ideas and national ambition. Millions of working Australians rely on the nation's oldest political party and more than ever they need Labor to li429ght the way nationally. The Australian way of life is really the Labor way. It can remain so only if we choose the Right way. Nick Dyrenfurth and Misha Zelinsky have rendered the Labor movement an extraordinary service in having The Write Stuff published. It encourages a contest of ideas, but perhaps more importantly provides a signpost which begins the journey back to government in Canberra. - Stephen Loosely

Book Why Is There No Labor Party in the United States

Download or read book Why Is There No Labor Party in the United States written by Robin Archer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the United States the only advanced capitalist country with no labor party? This question is one of the great enduring puzzles of American political development, and it lies at the heart of a fundamental debate about the nature of American society. Tackling this debate head-on, Robin Archer puts forward a new explanation for why there is no American labor party--an explanation that suggests that much of the conventional wisdom about "American exceptionalism" is untenable. Conventional explanations rely on comparison with Europe. Archer challenges these explanations by comparing the United States with its most similar New World counterpart--Australia. This comparison is particularly revealing, not only because the United States and Australia share many fundamental historical, political, and social characteristics, but also because Australian unions established a labor party in the late nineteenth century, just when American unions, against a common backdrop of industrial defeat and depression, came closest to doing something similar. Archer examines each of the factors that could help explain the American outcome, and his systematic comparison yields unexpected conclusions. He argues that prosperity, democracy, liberalism, and racial hostility often promoted the very changes they are said to have obstructed. And he shows that it was not these characteristics that left the United States without a labor party, but, rather, the powerful impact of repression, religion, and political sectarianism.

Book Story of Our Country

Download or read book Story of Our Country written by Adrian Padst and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-12 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Keating once remarked, "We at least in the Labor Party know that we are part of a big story, which is also the story of our country". Story of Our Country unpacks that big story and Labor's place in Australia's narrative. It explains why the ALP's purpose and character make it unique among centre-left parties in America, Britain, and Europe. Central to Labor's purpose is its promise to offer people a "share in those things that make life worth living" - the common good. Labor's vision of the good life is anchored in the everyday experience of working people. This gives Labor its distinctive strength - a paradoxical character that is at once progressive and conservative. Adrian Pabst argues that to gain and retain power, Labor needs to build coalitions between its traditional working-class base and middle-class voters. Labor can achieve this by deploying its distinctive strength to tackle the most critical issues facing Australia: inequality, precarious jobs, the care crisis, climate change, and emerging foreign powers.
